Zach Cregger's film "Barbarian" cause a minor stir when it was released in 2022. Made for a downright modest budget of $4.5 million, the film raked in $45 million at the box office, grabbing the attention of many enthused fright fans seeking new voices in the pop horror zeitgeist.

"Barbarian" was also one of many films in the emerging microgenre of Airbnb-related horror -- Fearbnb? -- wherein the protagonists check into a bed-and-breakfast, only to find something eerie or menacing about the house they've paid for. The genre also included films like "The Rental," "Superhost," "You Should Have Left," and "Room for Rent." Fearbnb movies were timely, tapping into the public's uneasiness with a total lack of regulation in the upstart self-rental business; if no one is overseeing your Airbnb, who is to say the homeowner isn't keeping a monster in their basement?

That's certainly the case with "Barbarian." The film...

When it comes to horror, the old adage "less is more" rings true, where the slow-building dread of an entity that isn't seen induces more fear than one that terrorizes the screen. Director Brandon Christensen, known for a few of his Shudder originals, The Puppetman and Superhost, plays on this concept to the extreme in his 2019 film, Z, a film that makes our imagination do all the work. Following a family who is tormented by a dark creature called Z, the film twists the idea of an imaginary friend into something more monstrous, except we don't necessarily see the monster. Jackrabbit Media has closed a North American deal at AFM with Gravitas Ventures on the completed twenty68 films sci-fi thriller Jonah.

Ben Van Kleek directed from a screenplay he co-wrote with Trevor Vandelac about a journalist’s childhood trauma which resurfaces during an investigation into a woman who claims her son was abducted by aliens.

Alaina Huffman (Smallville), Osric Chau (Superhost) and Ken Kirby (Good Trouble) star and Josh Farnworth, Van Kleek, and Vandelac served as producers. The film just premiered at Austin Film Festival.

Shudder decks the halls with horror this Halloween, ensuring no shortage of new and repertory offerings available to pad out your spooky season watchlists.

This month’s programming highlights bring brand new releases you won’t want to miss and a few older titles themed around the best holiday of the year. Need help trying to decide what to watch? Sam Zimmerman, VP of programming for Shudder, will bring back the Shudder Halloween Hotline on October 27 for all your horror needs during the holiday weekend.

From Creep Nation and Exit through Superhost and, of course, Barbarian there’s a plethora of films warning us to get a hotel room if we want to stay alive. Although considering how many horror films have been set in hotels, maybe we should just stay home,

Opening with a brief scene where two individuals whose faces we don’t see pull up to a house and do some half-assed cleaning then leave, Holistay then introduces us to an Irish couple Finn and Branna who are in San Diego, the film was actually shot in Los Vegas, on vacation.

They’ve barely gotten into their rental when Tony and Gia (Gabriela Kulaif; Kaka Nirvana) arrive from New York. There’s been a double booking.

Shudder, AMC Networks’ premium streaming service for horror, thrillers, and the supernatural, will be releasing writer/director Kurtis David Harder’s horror film Influencer on May 26th. The movie will also be available to stream on AMC+, and with just a couple weeks to go until its streaming premiere date arrives a trailer for the film has dropped online. Every once in a while, a wild, surprising horror movie makes the round that prompts fans to give each other the same advice upon watching it: go in cold. Don't read synopses, and don't even watch the trailer, but instead get your butt to theaters (if you can) and check it out for yourself while the element of surprise is still on the filmmakers' side. Happy Saturday, everyone! Yesterday, we discussed all the amazing independent horror movies that came out during the 2010s and beyond (you can read that piece Here), so I thought it made sense for this installment of our Saturday Streams series to stay as current as possible. With that in mind, I decided to comb through Shudder’s digital offerings and put together this list of 20 different indie horrors from the 2020s that are very much worth your time. When watching Superhost, there was an overwhelming feeling of jealousy that Gracie Gillam was granted such a wonderful character to bring to life. A role that allowed her the freedom to, let’s say express herself, and it was a challenge she rose to – and then some. Welp, 2021 was certainly a year. There was a lot of good (Movies! TV! Books! Random Horror Awesomeness!) and a lot of bad (pretty much everything else), but we made it to 2022, and I am excited for all that’s to come in the next 12 months (at least when it comes to stuff going on in horror). Over the course of last year, I think formally reviewed over 60 films, did interviews for at least 20 other projects beyond those reviewed films, relaunched Indie Horror Month in April, and even did a ton of other features and articles on Daily Dead as well.

Suffice to say, 2021 was pretty darned busy for me on the writing front and because there was so much content that I absolutely adored, I decided that for my favorites list this time around, I wanted to do things a bit differently because if I dive into every single thing...

A few weeks ago, Brandon Christensen’s latest genre offering, Superhost, made its streaming debut exclusively on the Shudder platform, and fans from all over have been falling in love with Christensen’s hilariously unsettling vacation from hell.
