A dark, twisted delight

I'm not sure what I expected, but I am impressed.

For all the shorts that Adult Swim has produced in recent years, most have honed in on the purely surreal bent that has dominated much of their original content. This holds true for those features that have angled towards comedy, as well as those of a darker thrust. 'Opal' readily joins that company, but with a narrative that is surprisingly straightforward compared to its brethren.

The visuals here are immediately arresting, with a seeming combination of computer animation, claymation, and puppetry. The faces of the characters clearly represent humans, but are sufficiently exaggerated in distinct ways to make them uncannily unsettling. 'Opal' is unquestionably creepy, and the character design is a big part of that, even before they speak and reveal their personalities. Add in the rest of the setting, and there's automatically a sense of tension here.

Shows on Adult Swim have been known to abruptly break into song at times, and 'Opal' embraces that equally odd and whimsical edge, too. The small tunes that litter this short have a bit of a sad, innocent air to them that in context only further boosts the uneasy chill throughout.

And that brings us to the hard-hitting punch, the grim twist that serves as a capstone and makes 'Opal' a contender for Adult Swim's most dark and bleak content. We've seen movies that hinge on similar revelations, perhaps, but that doesn't make it any less potent. I've seen enough of Adult Swim's shorts to know not to hold any particular expectations, and even still I was caught off guard. Bloody well done!

Cartoon Network has a relatively niche audience, Adult Swim even more so, and the shorts they produce are aimed toward the smallest selection of all. 'Opal' is not going to be for everyone, neither because of its visual style, nor its content - but it's startlingly brilliant, in the gloomiest of ways, and well worth checking out.

Haunting

A really fascinating little flick. Must rewatch at least twice to consume properly. The story subverts expectations and grips you till the last moment. Message is up to interpretation but I have my own idea. A lot of boring works but anyways great short.

How could anyone make something so unpleasant and beautiful at the same time..

OPAL is a story about Opal, a little girl living with her happy family (Some people may say too happy) and how her curiosity could get her in trouble..

This short was like.. the most terrifying, sad, and beautiful acid trip I've ever had, I'm honestly amazed at how much Jack Stauber got to do in this film despite its short 12 minutes runtime.

With amazing visuals, Great and impressive claymation animation, and seriously catchy musical sequences like seriously, the grandpa didn't need to go this hard on the beat, and it's very rewatchble too, and that's really cool because this is one of those shorts that gets better and better everytime you watch it, I can't recommend this enough, Jack Stauber my friend.. You're a genius!

Amazing short film. Very rewatchable. The short may seem confusing, but the ending explains it, leaving you satisfied and heartbroken. 10/10.

I've never given a perfect score...

This short film is perhaps one of the greatest works of 2020, and maybe the last ten years. The genius storytelling, the intertwining stories and characters, the underlying messages - I can't fit it all into one review, but "Opal" is stunning.

Even though this isn't eligible for an Oscar, give it one anyways.

Wow, just, wow. This short is absolutely beautiful, emotional, and shocking. This is the kind of thing that people will look back on in 20 years and realize how beautiful and perfect it is. One of the most important things in a movie is to be able to watch it, and then want to watch again. There are not very many things that I wanted to rewatch more than Opal. I rewatched it like 4 times after I first saw it, and I wanted even more. I found videos about it, heard other people's opinions, and just wanted to see even more. The amount of details in this you will never be able to watch it enough to catch all of the details in the short. Jack Stauber is a genius, and this just proves it.

Fantastic

So glad that Jack Stauber gets to air his creative masterpieces on Adult Swim. I remember when I would record King of the Hill every night just to see if any of Stauber's work would flash through . This is no different, very unique and has you focused and gives you a in depth analysis of each character and what their motives are. I feel blessed go have seen such work.

Oddly enjoyable

It's very dark and very beautiful at the same time. It truly made me feel conflicted in a way I can't full describe. The claymation is very well done and you can tell that a lot of love and probably a lot of sadness was put into this project.

One of the best shorts I've ever seen

Opal is just as layered as most feature length films, yet runs at a concise twelve minutes or so.

This claymation short follows a wide-eyed little girl named Opal, who lives with her doting family. She slips out of bed one night to explore a creepy, derelict house across the street despite her parents' gentle warnings not to. There, she encounters four things.

An obese, blind older man, glued to a recliner and listening to television all day. He smokes to the point of being unable to speak without wheezing and coughing up blood.

A younger man constantly preening himself in front of a half-dozen mirrors, convinced that one day he'll look perfect, and show "them" how wrong "they" were to turn him down.

A woman laying in bed in a drug and alcohol induced haze, mumbling to herself about how much she sacrifices.

And the horrible, horrible truth that lies up in the attic.

The short explores themes of escapism, abuse and neglect, but in a fairly nuanced way. While the three strangers Opal encounters are undeniably awful people, they are also pitiable to the point of being almost sympathetic.

The short has several short musical numbers as well, which are all excellent. "Easy to Breathe," sung by the old man, is a melancholy yet oddly upbeat song about how the old man feels important and loved by the fake friendliness of television. "Virtuous Cycle," sung by the woman, is a disturbing lullaby about the codependency between a daughter and negligent mother. My personal favorite is "Mirror Man," sung by the younger man, a flamboyant, fast-paced and manic song about the younger man's simultaneous self-loathing and narcissism. All of this is bookended by the pleasant, old fashioned sounding "We See You, Opal," sung by Opal's family.

Do yourself a favor and go watch this short. It's short, sweet and poignant, darkly funny yet achingly sad. Well worth a few minutes of your time.

Awful

This has no redeeming qualities. Jack Stauber strikes out on this one. So tedious that during this 13 minute short I checked 3 times to see how much time was left.

This film gets a "Fever Scale" rating of 10

I just got HBO Max and discovered that they have a bunch of Adult Swim programs, which I haven't had the joy of watching for close to a decade. I came across Jack Stauber's Opal, and it is a true gem! The Claymation, music, and overall ambiance makes this one of the creepiest, yet most beautiful shorts I have ever seen! Whenever I watch a film with stop motion animation or any other type of unusual media, I assess its effectiveness according to how well it does at tricking my brain into thinking I am growing delirious from fever (This goes back to the stuff I would watch as a sickly child). Wallace and Gromit, Gumby, The Year Without a Santa Claus, and Fraggle Rock all give me this delirious, yet comforting, feeling. Opal is the first film I have seen in the last decade that has given me such an eerie and nostalgic feeling. It is as if Gumby and his friends ate an entire sheet of acid, and we get to ride along to witness their experience. This film is truly an amazing work of art.

A difficult subject with pitch-perfect execution

You *know* this thing is good if I, who loathes and fears claymation, refuse to dock it any points for the visuals. They are at times hard to look at. But, if anything, they just add to the effect.

"Opal" is what happens when you take the standard trope of characters traveling from their ho-hum lives to a fantasy world, then flip it on its head, and bash that head in once or twice for good measure. It is a story about escapism; dysfunctional families; and the desire to be loved, and to have your needs met in a world that can't provide for them. Everything in this film feels deliberately "off," from the misshapen characters to the lighting and eerie score, from Opal's happy family seen at the beginning to the dysfunctional one that lives in the spooky house across the street. By venturing into that house, young Opal will encounter three adults who each view her as their "Claire," a child who they can use to feed their own self-destructive lifestyles. Along the way, she'll start to learn why these people are the way they are, usually through weirdly catchy musical numbers... as well as learning something about herself she might just wish she didn't.

Fair warning: Those who have been victims of child abuse or neglect may find Opal a difficult watch. Though it may also make you feel seen in a way that few other stories do---and that is probably true for anyone who watches the film, not just survivors.

With a twelve-minute run time, this short does far better at crafting characters who feel human than do most full-length films. The three adults, while all objectively bad people, are just so trapped by their vices that it becomes almost impossible not to relate to them. In particular, Claire's vain and self-obsessed father stands out as a fully realized character. His song, "Mirror Man," is the most visually inventive song sequence I've seen in quite some time (and a total bop, at that), almost like being in a hall of mirrors. You don't see too many male characters that struggle with their appearance... even though feeling insecure about one's looks is pretty much a universal human experience. It's little touches like this, avoiding stereotypes, using clever symbolism and visual allegory, and drawing on the emotional core of common problems, that take this short from just another creepy animation to something that can speak to things beyond itself.

This is actually my first encounter with Jack Stauber's work, and I will no doubt be exploring more of it in the future. The songs are great... but really, the story and the characters are what I'm here for. As not to give away the excellent twist, I'll just say that the subject matter is treated with the horror and gravity that it deserves. Whether you want to escape from Opal's story or return to it is up to you. But it's well worth a watch.

Astoundingly Horrifying

Wow, just wow. This short is probably one of the single best shorts i have seen in a while. Jack Stauber's oddly terrifying music style mixed in with claymation meshes so well into this 13 minute short film. I must admit that it is hard to digest during your first watch, but that is part of the beauty of it. There is a huge twist at the end that will have you thinking for a while.

Opal is about a young girl who lives with her Mother, Father, and Grandfather, who decides to explore the old house across the street that her family has forbidden her from going to after hearing screams from the window of the house. She comes across 3 strangers on her journey through the house and hears a musical number from each of them.

The music in this short is well crafted, the animation is great, an absolute must watch! 10/10.

Beautifully bizzard

I suddenly got into short films, especially one's from YouTube. And after watching "Heck" (Bitesized Nightmares (Skinamarink)) this was in my recommended, and I watched it and I didn't stop thinking about its weird and creepy style. Opal is a great short, I would like to see this as a feature film in theatres, the stop motion and live action mix is just stunning and the VHS felling in it. I was never so scared in my life and I didn't stop watching it, I just watched it over and over again and it's just delightful to watch. Despite its weird and disturbing climax, it's just a great film to watch in the dark... I might rent a cinema just to watch this film on the big screen.

My favorite short animate film of all time.

A film that can both really make you feel depression and anxiety all in 1 single emotion that cannot be named. It's a film that still unnerves me and scares me to this day. It's a beautiful film and it's storytelling is masterful. There are many scenes in the movie that deeply upset me because for one it's depressing but it's also just incredibly powerful and horrifying to watch. The film is mainly based around Opal, a little girl who seemingly has a perfect life. A loving family. A good life. The only problem she seems to face is a house across the street that she finds to be intriguing and frightening. One night she decides she visit the house and meets a frightening family. The film mainly tackles addiction. Jack Stauber mainly does films to promote his music and sometimes just random skits in his channel. I wish he would do a lot more of this type of stuff. It's beautiful, tragic, horrifying, and disturbing. I couldn't recommend it higher.

Interesting story mechanism, very catchy music

A twist at the end of this short surprises like the twist in The Sixth Sense. The protagonist is not who they seem and what's more, they don't know it either. The short 12 minute length of this short film makes this simple but effective premise memorable.

And what's more, the characters that viewers meet along the way have four very catchy songs, similar to Broadway musical meets 1950s choral harmonics but hyped up to an almost frantic pitch, that still manages to remain pleasant to hear. Like, catchy.

The claymation is done in an almost grotesque style, but still captivating to watch due to the tempo changes, the transitions, and the many moving parts right on cue with the songs. As well as some creative sets. Every scene has something interesting, even if it's just in the odd ways the characters breathe: what looks like a live action body behind claymation faces breathing in an exaggerated fashion.

Wow, just wow.

Honestly, this was my favorite thing to come out of 2020. (besides meeting my gf hehe) but like this is such an amazing short, and everything is done so perfectly. The art remains as amazing as always and the story is very well executed. All-in-all, everyone should set the 12 minutes aside to watch this piece of art.

Best short film ever.

Every part if this film was amazing. Rewatch it if you felt confused, but with the lens of a neglected child. I have watched this film over 50 times and have not grown tired of the amazing music and catch new details every time. This film packs amazing details in ever frame. You are introduced to the main character Claire as she is outside and has to make her way to her room. As she makes her way through her loving home you get to see how each family member treats Claire as she courageously walks through her house one step at a time. You get to see interactions from Grandpa, Father, Mother and you see their unique personalities.

What???

This short seems to be creepy and disturbing just for it's own sake.

I'm quite shocked this made it on to Max, as I was waiting for the tie in to everything I was seeing but it never came. It feels like there is supposed to be this understood twist at the end but the story is too weird to understand what it means. If it does indeed mean something. It definitely feels like there is supposed to be symbolism here but it misses the mark. The movie doesn't make sense and just gives you an eerie feeling from watching it.

Better examples of what I think this is trying to be are done on YouTube.

I suppose people who like experimental films with no plot (or have an affinity for the weird and disturbing) will like this. Everyone else turn away.

Ugh!

Sorry folks. Just being weird and bizarre for the sake of being weird and bizarre doesn't do it for me. Maybe if I took a huge amount of drugs just before watching, it might be mildly amusing in a way only very stoned people could appreciate. Seeing the rating at 7.7 (I know, I know - I shouldn't base my watch list on that), I assumed it might be, well, SOMEWHAT decent. Wrong. Just a sloppy mess of acid-trip nonsense. Again, this might have some redeemable entertainment value if you are stoned enough, but it's absolutely horrible if you're sober. My guess is that the positive reviews are probably left by people involved with the making of this dud.
