Slow pacing but speaks to its audience

For being a low budget production it's well shot. It's definitely for the faith based audience and preaches to the choir. The story could be tightened and much of the melodramatic music and scenes could be cut. A stronger script would have helped but it's still a worthwhile watch.

Incredible movie worth watching even if you're not Christian or like faith-based movies.

I read somewhere that "Your heartache is someone else's hope. If you make it through, somebody else is going to make it through". That is what this movie means to me, personally. It's based on the true story of a person who suffers trauma, has a dream, fulfills their dream before their dream turns into a nightmare and they hit rock bottom. Only someone who has hit rock bottom will know what it's like and what the lead character is going through. Don't let the film's overt Christian themes stop you from watching this gem of a movie as I myself am not a Christian. The search for redemption is universal and can be appreciated by almost anyone. As one reviewer has already noted, it deals with heavy and difficult subjects, and so you must be in the mood and mentally prepared for such a movie. Criticisms can be directed at the quality of the acting especially from the actor who plays the wife and the training officer but the good far outweighs the bad. If you are in the mood for a serious movie then please give this a try.

An impressive drama

While not Citizen Kane and not without some faults, including a little melodrama, this was still an engaging and enjoyable story of redemption. Well acted, and I do enjoy seeing Dean Cane in whatever role he's in. The lead actor, Ignacyo Matynia did a fine job in his role of the conflicted police office struggling with the dark reality of his job and turning to substance abuse, then ultimately finding redemption. And, you know, I couldn't help but think he looks like a cross between Jensen Ackles and Adrien Brody. Also, reading his name makes me think, "Hallo, my name is Ignacyo Matynia, you killed my father..." etc.

~ ~ ~ Beautiful & Inspiring ~ ~ ~

The world needs far MORE stories like this one. This film is absolutely powerful, moving and full of heart & FAITH, something that is sorely lacking in American culture.

See it ~~~ you'll love it!

An Astounding Movie to which I can relate to in many ways on a personal level.. God is Always Good no matter what you've done or what you've been through or where you've been. He is always there close to us just waiting eagerly for us to let Him in!!

There is Absolutely no Chain that cannot be Broken by the Blood of Jesus!! AMEN!!

This movie has the power to change lives

This movie contained every single element required to not only captivate an audience cinematography wise, but to also demonstrate the miraculous healing power of Jesus in a highly realistic way. Hooked from the opening scene, I was taken on a journey through the heartache, pain, and trauma that police officers are exposed to. By seeing their struggle in such a raw real way, this has absolutely awakened a newfound respect in me for the men and women that serve to protect us. More than that, it got straight to the heart of the issue around Christian skepticism and the big questions that so many of us battle before finally surrendering to the light. Overall, this has hands down been one of the best Christian movies I have ever watched.

This is a movie you have to be emotionally prepared to watch

Break Every Chain is a brilliantly acted, inspiring film. However, I want to put out a warning: it's very sad. The premise of the film (which is a true story) is a police officer who receives a promotion. In the beginning he's on cloud nine, but he soon discovers his job entails going to the scenes of car crashes. This causes him to become depressed, and he starts drinking excessively. He and his wife also suffer an immense tragedy. The combination of burnout from his job, the loss he experiences in his personal life, and his alcoholism lead him spiraling into hopelessness. He finds himself angry at God. This movie might be hard to watch for some people. It started out on a positive note, but then one awful thing happens after another. I didn't watch to the end. It was late at night, and I figured this wasn't the best movie to be watching at nighttime. I like going to bed with happy thoughts. Honestly, I prefer Christian films over secular movies. Hollywood doesn't portray people's interactions realistically. Some people might not like Christian films because they're too real, in which case, I suggest watching when you're in the right head space. I hope I'm able to catch the end of it one day, preferably during an afternoon.

This story is a mess

Ignacyo Matynia delivered a solid acting performance as the main character. I sincerely hope he has a great career ahead. The rest of the movie is a dumpster fire of cinema. The story execution and writing flaws are massive. It lives in one dreadful depressed tone of awkward and disjointed moments for far too long in the film. I do wish this well intentioned story of redemption was pulled off better. The fact that it was based on a true story makes it more unfortunate that it was lacking in so many ways. I do not recommend this movie. Watch a movie like "Courageous" for a much better execution of movie making and an uplifting story to leave you inspired.

Phenomenal film

This film grabs your attention from the first scene and holds it through to the end. The cinematography is breathtaking. The performances are stellar and emotional. You really feel what Officer Hickory and his family went through. If you, or someone you know, are struggling/have struggled with addiction, depression, trauma, or suicidal thoughts PLEASE watch this movie! There is hope and light at the end of the dark tunnel!!

Too much and too long

This is a very much needed and edifying story. However, the protracted details of every negative experience and the drinking was unnecessarily rubbed in our faces. The first one would have made the point; further incidents should have been much shorter. The drinking episodes should also not have been exacerbated by overexposure! It was so bad, that I stopped watching. I am a recovering alcoholic and this showed "me" way too much. If the makers of this film wished to have an impact on the horrors of alcoholism, this was NOT the way to do it. The film could easily have been half its length and if it had been done more viewer-sensitively, I could have seen it through.

A Nice Plot Ruined By Overbearing Sound Track

The plot had all the makings for a decent Christian film. Both the lead actor and the wife represented a good pairing for the story telling, and overall the visual cinematography is good and with some very nice shots.

But the use of music and sound in the film borders on abusive. It completely destroyed the substance of the whole movie. Unbelievable use of sound. Not one scene was allowed to be just the fluid experience of dialogue or emotion with an accompanying soundtrack.

It became so irritating to the point of infuriating.

A scene does not need to be overwhelmed with sound at every instance.

One of the Most Powerful Movies Ever Watched

Wowww...This film was so intriguing and inspiring throughout! I definitely recommend for anyone struggling and has struggled with addiction, like myself, to let them know that there Is Hope in Jesus and Healing Is possible!! Heartbreaking? For sure, at times. Raw and honest? Absolutely. But still definitely worth the watch in my book! Loved this movie and the messages portrayed here! 9/10.

Christianity vs Religionism

I gave the movie 6 Stars because it's telling the true story of a police officer who took to the bottle instead of quitting the police force. The moment he took that first drink because he couldn't handle what he came upon, he should have resigned. Police officers across this nation face hell every day, but they continue doing their job. Sure it affects them, but not all go off the deep end. He was the type who could have become another Derek Chauvin.

I believe telling his story put our police officers in a bad light. It was akin to his statement about "coffee and donuts. Did he actually believe that's all police officers do? It's a way to pass the time? It's all guns and roses?

To the reviewer who didn't give any star. I am a born again believer in Jesus as my Savior, but I'm not "religious". All manner of beliefs can be construed as "religious" including satanism. An atheist can be religious. You get my drift.

To the reviewer who gave it 2 stars and apparently doesn't live in the USA, you missed the whole point of the movie. It's about finding your way back to or just finding God our Creator. Why you watched the movie is puzzling since you don't believe in God. You think of yourself as a god. To use your words "we believe in ourselves, not some God." BTW, not all Europeans believe as you do. It's also apparent you don't like the USA or Americans. What does being an American and living in the USA have to do with this movie? To your way of thinking we are ignorant fools and beneath you.

Becomes drunk after VERY FIRST DAY?

This could have been a stellar movie. But right off the bat it's not based in reality. After going through the academy, this "officers" first day is rough, yes. But to become so JADED and DARK after the first day is laughable. I've seen this happen to officers after 10 years. But this guy becomes a raging alcoholic within the first few months? PATHETIC. Makes the movie unwatchable. I don't know why the directors or writers felt the need to RUSH this storyline thru so fast, but it absolutely ruins the movie. Any attempt to get the important message across regarding redemption and turning your life over to Jesus is completely lost because of the lack of reality. ONE fireman at the scene of a multi vehicle FATALITY ACCIDENT? SERIOUSLY? Pathetic.

Real and Powerful

A wonderful view into the hard, stressful life of 1st responders. This story of Jonathan and Stacy Hickory can be a beautiful example to anyone that is under stress and experiencing brokenness. Break Ever Chain provides a way to find true restoration of a life, a marriage and a family.

No redemption, but a movie rather generating doubts.

This movie would have a great potential, if the music would not destroy it and the lack of redemption would conclude it to be senseless. It is marketed as Christian movie, but the underlying message is very anti-Christian and can create serious doubts in a believer.

PROS

+ Powerful story.

+ Great actors.

+ Great filmography.

CONS

  • The movie starts with deep frustration and a severe critique of KYRIOS, and it never recovers from that. It ends with a main actor who hadn't found any redemption after some loose contacts with a pastor, but searched for a solution in counseling, as if KYRIOS would have failed him. Yes, he throws aways his alcohol, yes they have another baby and seem to recover their relationship, but there is no spiritual redemption, no salvation. This is probably the saddest state a 'Christian' movie can end with.

  • The music is disturbing and overly dramatic. I had to take my headphones several times off, because it was impossible to stand that nearly demonic music. Yes, the makers wanted to make a point, but that point could have been achieved without torturing the viewer and without an endless repetition of an image of a dead woman's face.

  • The producers have sadly no proper theological understanding and have obviously never heard of the age of accountability. "Sydney, 16 all her dreams gone" is a conclusion that could not be more at odds with the Bible, which makes it clear that every child, no matter believer or unbeliever, who dies before the age of 20, will automatically experience salvation.

So why should her dreams be gone, if she experiences something infinitely more beautiful right now? The same applied with the death of their unborn child. We might excuse this misunderstanding with the unbelief of the main actor who just acted how a pagan would react, but his wife is portrayed as a believer and nevertheless has a total breakdown. She should have known her child in much better hands than she could ever provide. This is sadly a very selfish mindset, to put the personal relationship over the joy of the child's salvation he or she would have possibly never experienced if having passed the age of 20.

What a blessing

Excellent depiction in a short time frame of the tremendous impact of continuous suffering felt by police officers on any given day. The need for resilience and spiritual healing is an absolute must and this movie shows how to get there. Stay safe Jonathan! God be with you always.

A for effort

I understand the meaning behind and the premise of the movie... to inspire and bring hope in Christ. Which there is and it did. But it was super cheesy and I hated all the police portrayals (as an officer).... Super unrealistic and not at all how field training goes right off the bat... the very first day he starts drinking and develops this alcoholic addiction?? And then is all over work scenes and taking swigs while actually working... just... no. I wish it was better. That's not how any of this works Oof. I watched the whole thing but my goodness, it was silly. I wish we had more options to choose from for Christian based films that were actually good!

I was meant to see the movie...

This movie was 100% realistic to my life. For those who do not agree, then they have never experienced what alcoholism can do to a marriage. I could relate to the entire movie. This exact marriage was how I was living. My spouse running his own show his entire life. Me running my own show during our marriage. I am married to an alcoholic spouse who cheated on me with men because he was confused in our marriage. Don't recommend being bisexual! We're both now working out our marriage. I plan to show my husband this movie. It was that good and I still think about it as I too had chains in my life I am now breaking. I recommend this movie to anyone! I also recommend listening to Zac Williams Chain Breakers. My life has changed because of this movie and am so thankful for God.

Music and writing

6.0 stars.

The story is about a man who becomes a police officer and can't handle all the death and violence that he witnesses on the job. His struggles are perpetuated by the loss of his father at a young age and his problem with alcohol.

I don't have much good to say about the film, because for me the most important aspect of a film is entertainment value. This film is not entertaining in the ways I prefer. Even sad or depressing movies can be entertaining, in that they evoke strong emotions and sympathy for the characters and they contain brilliant moments. 'Break Every Chain' is totally hit and miss (mostly miss). I'll explain...

The casting is terribly poor. The lead's parents are the wrong age, way too old to be parents of a 12 year old boy (he looks about 12). The mom looks like she's 60 and the dad maybe 63, not sure, but I find it difficult to imagine they would be raising two young kids. And his sister is even younger, she's like 8-10, so that means the mom gave birth around the age of 50? These sorts of issues cause me concern and the movie completely loses all credibility at that point. It's a shame, because the main actor is pretty good, Dean Cain did okay too (which is rare). The wife is not too bad.

On the bright side, the cinematography was excellent, as well as the directing. Both were superb, but good movie-making does not cover up the terrible casting and music and the worst part of the story, which is the writing. The script is atrocious and so I think the film suffers greatly for it. They shouldn't make a movie based on such a poor script, what a waste of money and time. In addition, much of the impact is diminished with the repetitive soundtrack, replete with monotonous, low quality music. Goes to show that it only takes a couple factors to decimate a production. In my opinion, all it needed was a few rewrites and a new music producer. I give it a 6.0 for the great lighting, editing, and direction, otherwise this feels more like a 4.8.
