Simply put this is a very bad film. Boring story, zero character development, cheap look. There is absolutely nothing about this that feels 70s - it was clearly shot on a lousy digital camera, and the actors couldn't be more gen z. There's really no plot- it's literally the title. There's a man in a white van apparently. He drives around abducting characters we don't know or care about. Not sure what the "real story is" behind the meandering script, but it's bound to be more interesting than this movie. I feel like two stars is more than generous, but i guess sean astin being in it is cool (?)
Expectations were low going into this film, after all the below average reviews online.
They needn't have been
For me, one of the more realistic films in the horror genre. Yes, some lingering scenic shots were a bit much, not every character had its arc completed, and the time jumps showing previous victims felt like they could have been worked in a bit better.
But the film, as based on true events, doesn't go to a place with insane twists and turns and wild jump scares. Instead it builds to a climax that feels real and as if you were in the protagonists POV and the ending is satisfying, which a lot of horror films fail to accomplish.
You're really rooting for the lead girl and feel for her.
If you're expecting a dramatic twist where they unmask the baddie and you want a "it was X all along!" then maybe give this a miss.
Cracking soundtrack too, both with the 70s music and the original compositions.
Would recommend :)

The Man with the White Van (2023) is a film I caught in theaters last night. The storyline follows a serial killer in a white van wreaking havoc in the early 1970s. A young woman, struggling to be taken seriously by her family, becomes the killer's next target. Despite her repeated warnings about a mysterious van she keeps spotting, her family fails to take action-until it's too late.
Directed by Warren Skeels (Trespians), the film features a strong cast, including Madison Wolfe (The Conjuring 2), Brec Bassinger (Stargirl), Ali Larter (Final Destination), Sean Astin (The Goonies), and Skai Jackson (The Smurfs).
The PG-13 rating is a noticeable limitation, as the kill scenes feel too restrained and lack impact. That's a shame because the film boasts fantastic performances that lend authenticity to each scene. The 1970s setting is beautifully crafted, with meticulous attention to attire, cars, and backdrops that perfectly capture the era. The gritty cinematography and smart camera angles further enhance the atmosphere.
While the kill sequences are underwhelming overall, one standout moment-the axe sequence-shows glimpses of what the film could have achieved with a stronger approach to its horror elements. The background sound design is top-notch, and there are a few well-executed jump scares to keep things engaging. However, the ending is disappointingly straightforward and lacks the punch needed to leave a lasting impression.
In conclusion, The Man with the White Van has some redeeming qualities, including strong performances and an authentic 70s vibe, but its PG-13 limitations prevent it from standing out in the genre. I'd score it a 5-5.5/10 and recommend it only with tempered expectations.

A very well made 70's setting of a picture.
The characters were very believable. The dad being a 40+ hours a week working man coming home late hours of the day. The mom, being a stay at home mom taking care of the house and family. The kids, 2 daughters and 1 son. Typical American family. Oldest daughter into herself as being a proper Christian daughter, but with a hidden world of being the popular girl, the middle daughter being the rebellious one and the boy being the active one and wanting to take the lead and protect the family while the dad is on travel.
Very believable setting of the story. The story kept bouncing back and forth. I love how filmmakers are bring back 70's and 80's and 90's setting films. The set designer and costume designer were right on point. I loved the hidden fact of the killer being in the dark. You don't see the face all you see is the back of his head and his hand grabbing the weapon and you see his walk, a creepy walk. Hence, The Man in the White Van!! I love this movie. Excellent and well made. What I feel when I see this is: Halloween and Michael Myers which ironically is set on Halloween week. The reason for 7/10 is the screen writing did play out slow. But it needed it so the viewer can build up to the climatic ending.

"The Man in the White Van" is a gripping thriller that masterfully keeps audiences on the edge of their seats from start to finish. Running for 1 hour and 45 minutes, this PG-13 film weaves a suspenseful narrative that hooks you right in.
The film centers around a seemingly ordinary man who becomes the prime suspect in a series of mysterious events that unsettle a quiet suburban neighborhood. The director does a fantastic job of building tension through skillful pacing and clever plot twists. The cinematography adds to the eerie atmosphere, capturing the suburban setting with a haunting beauty that contrasts the unfolding terror.
The cast delivers strong performances, especially the lead actor, whose portrayal of the titular "Man in the White Van" is both chilling and nuanced. The supporting characters add depth to the story, making you care about their fates and adding emotional weight to the suspense.
One of the standout aspects of this film is its ability to balance psychological horror with moments of genuine human connection. It's not just about the thrills; it's also a story about trust, fear, and the lengths people will go to protect their loved ones.
While the movie might tread familiar ground in the genre, it does so with a fresh perspective and a style that feels both modern and classic. Fans of psychological thrillers and suspenseful dramas will find "The Man in the White Van" a satisfying watch that leaves a lasting impression.
