For a long time (shamefully!), 'The Talking Eggs' was unknown to me. It was only when working my way through my re-visiting (mostly) of Rabbit Ears Productions' work when it was discovered, and am kicking myself at how such a lovely story was missed for such a long time. 'The Talking Eggs' as a story deserves to be better known, with 'Cinderella'-like elements but the stepmother and step-sister are actually biological, as it is a lovely story with some valuable messaging.
Rabbit Ears Productions' version of 'The Talking Eggs' is very highly recommended. Is it one of the company's best? No, not to me, as other adaptations of other stories adapted moved and connected with me more and are more familiar to me. All their output is well worth watching, and 'The Talking Eggs' is one of the excellent ones and anybody who has never read the story beforehand prior to watching will want to read it. Like the company's other adaptations though, a great job is done bringing the original story to life.
'The Talking Eggs' has such a lot to love. The visuals are simple, other Rabbit Ears Productions adaptations have slightly more ambitious background art, but beautifully detailed and authentic. The characters are very well drawn, with the most striking actually being Conjure Woman.
Even better are the music and Sissy Spacek's (best known, by me, for 'Carrie') narration. The music is provided by Michael Doucet and BeauSoleil (Doucet being the founder of the band, a band worth hearing just to say briefly), and the Cajun folksy flavour of the music and the spirited and sensitive way it's performed captivated me and added so much to the setting. Spacek's narration is a beautifully balanced mix of sincere and entertaining, and she uses her voice in terms of dynamic contrast expertly. She provides a lot of emotion, wide-ranging, and is always engaging.
Writing is neither simplistic or convoluted, it is mature but it is also done in a way that will keep children engaged (or at least should). The story is always engaging and the valuable messaging is not handled heavy-handedly, the darker moments are handled in a way that is also not too dark. Really liked the characterisation too, with a very rootable antagonist and a situation that is actually worth relating to.
