I wanted to see this film when I saw that Joseph Sikora was in it. I watch Power and binge watched the spin off Force, so it was impressive to see him do something that was not Tommy Eagan. Very convincing as well mattered novelist who had success with one book and is working on another one. Then this white dude takes his girlfriend and his closest friends who are all black to a cabin in the woods and he thought that would somehow end well.
Fear was a movie that starts out a social commentary that honestly may have gone over with me better six or eight months ago. My level of social fear has lessened sense then. This may work on others but all I see is an indi movie that came out too late to give me the full fear it intended.
Plus, that supernatural element felt like a great story but possibly a little too complex. I felt that the filmmakers had some good talent to do some damage but instead everything was broken.
The attempt to frighten me with a real issue than present me with a decent story that was laid out very uneventfully just did not work for me.
Just very dull.

If you ignore the bad digital graphics, terrible acting, and convoluted plot...you could craft a drinking game with this movie. Every time a character says we've gotta get outta here...and they don't, take drink. Every time a choir inexplicably starts singing Latin...take a drink. Every time a confusing new plot point is added... take a drink. Every time someone says It's not real and then acts like it is,...take a drink. Everytime a character makes a inexplicable decision that puts them in danger, and somehow moves the plot...take a drink. *warning this is not responsible drinking, and may result in alcohol poisoning.

Where do I even start? The movie is plagued by an awful script, terrible direction, and subpar acting. The movie has zero direction, youll spend the majority of the movie asking yourself what the hell an I watching. Too many characters for you to keep up with or care about. At the one hour mark i still had no clue this wasnt a spoof film. I like a few of the actors in this but jeez read the script before accepting the role. I got to watch it for free and i still overpaid. It is so bad i spent the last ten minutes of this movie wrining this review. Please for the love of god dont watch this movie.

A group of big city friends, head out to a remote complex of cabins, in anticipation of two of them getting engaged, under the ruse of celebrating the female half of the couple's birthday.
However, it was built upon land that harbours a dark legend.
A legend concerning a number of native women, who were kidnapped by a group of gold miners, before starting a coven, and taking control of the town, by using their magickal powers to make the men hallucinate.
While hanging out around a campfire, the group reveal their most deepset fears to one another.
Setting off a series of events, during which their fears start to become manifest.
Unfortunately, the whole thing becomes a convoluted mess.
As they try to tie in a number of plot devices, like the presence of ghosts, the spread of a respiratory illness, spiked wine, and something being released from a mysterious pandora's box.
So, when one of their friends gets sick...the paranoia starts to set in...and the group starts to turn on one another.
You can tell they wanted this to be something like The Shining.
But it's not The Shining.
Rather, being more akin to this year's biggest horror flop, Snow Falls.
Which is based on a similar theme.
It's fault lies in the structure.
Which, due to the sheer number of characters- and flipping back and forth between different aspects of the plotline- you are never really able to become engaged with the story or characters.
For the most part, I felt the acting was fine.
With the lead male actor being, by far, the weakest of the bunch.
But the writing is subpar.
There's just no nuance to it.
Things plod along, and suddenly "everybody's dead".
But, frankly, you just don't care.
The main character is fashioned as an author who has come to the area as research for his new book.
And he, somehow, unravels the mystery...though, it's not exactly clear how he managed to do so.
Which goes to show just how underdeveloped the storyline and structure really are.
I tried to give it the benefit of the doubt...in that there would be some sort of twist at the end, that would tie all of these things together.
But it just never comes to fruition.
On the one hand, you have the whole psychological horror angle (which is poorly done, in the form of flashbacks).
While, on the other, you have the whole supernatural thing going on.
And they just don't vibe as being two parts of the same whole...despite the fact that you know they are.
To their credit, they do make an effort to do this, by introducing a monster-like charcter.
But it doesn't work.
The whole thing simply lacks that cohesive element it needs to really work.
And never meets the threshold required to keep you engaged.
Hence why it has been garnering such harsh reviews.
2.5 out of 10.

Right on schedule, our abysmal January horror release is here as the movie Fear hit cinemas this past Friday. Horror films are continuing to flood into cinemas, and with that, we've gotten a slew of standout scary movies. But we must take the bad with the good, and conversely, there has also been an increase in junk like this. There were a total of two, maybe three scenes that offered me something incrementally above unwatchable. The opening credit sequence was nicely arranged, but I think it's safe to say that the opening credits should not be the high point of a film. None of the characters were likeable, partly because of the brash realism of the writing and partly because of the shallow acting. The story was formulaic, and the metaphor on fear manifestation was so literal that I hesitate to even call it a metaphor. Oh well, it's films like this that'll deepen my appreciation for the more refined horror projects I'm sure to see in the future.

If i could go back in time and stop myself from choosing this movie, i would. It started off strong, with an interesting plot and a storyline that was easy to follow. I liked the idea of a fear based horror movie, but it took less than 30 minutes to drift into boring nothingness. They didn't follow the original plot of the movie, the acting was all over the place, the scenes clashed, the logic was absolutely nonexistent. Adding the sudden religious savior complex at the end totally killed it for my family. It came out of nowhere and ruined the classic indie vibe. It was unoriginal and bland, and seemed to follow the classic horror sequence. Regret.

A group of friends rent out a lodge in the middle of the woods to hangout. Little do they know they will all have to face their greatest fears. If they can't overcome them their souls will be gone forever, consumed by fear.
Should I even bother putting any effort into this review since the filmmakers clearly didn't put any effort into the film? I mean the title is fear. A like wow it's gonna be about scary stuff.
It's not just the title. The script feels like they wrote it over the weekend and didn't read it over. It's so lazy and full of contrivances, dangling treads, poorly written characters who's motivations are not clearly defined who come off both annoying and dull at the same time. Like it's hilarious how bad it is.
The only thing more hilariously bad is the performances. I'm pretty sure most of these guys have never done thus before. Well there not true, but you could have fooled me. I laughed out loud at most of the line deliveries here. And the visual effects are just awful. Like it just looks messy and unfinished. Probably explains why so many of the kills are lame as hell. Most of them are off screen and nothing you haven't seen before. Kind of like this movie.
I'll say this about Fear, it's unique that so many things could go this wrong all in one movie. I think I owe Skinamarink an apology. At least that film was experimental and ambitious while also have some good scares. Fear honestly isn't that scary. It's loud and obnoxious. In fact, other words I'd use to describe this movie are dull, stupid, and uninspired. I'm not afraid to say Fear is a frighteningly terrible movie. Don't be afraid and feel like you're missing out by not seeing it. Alright I'm done no more puns I'm afraid. Review over! Don't watch Fear.

Wow, where do I start? The central idea for the story is not a bad one and could've been something decent had it not been for the terribly written dialouge, the absolutely embarrassing acting and the all around derivative feel of the film. Like honestly, how many movies did this director have to rip off in order to shoot his film? It was all terribly familiar and ground that has been covered in other, better horror films. It was almost so bad it was good to be honest. I have busted out laughing like that in quite a while. Some of the lines these actors have to deliver are startlingly bad. Nobody talks like this and nobody would react like this. I also have to mention the soundtrack for the film. It was just awful and did not fit the film one bit, it made cheesy scenes even more cheesy and it ruined what could've been tense scenes as well. Just a trash movie all around.

I admittedly tend to be very critical and harsh when it comes to horror movies, as I've seen pretty much all of them and have high expectations. However, I found this film unexpectedly enjoyable. It doesn't advertise itself to be some convoluted, thought-invoking horror film. It's your typical weekend getaway gone awry horror flick but with a considerable, effective twist that I personally enjoyed. I also loved the ending, because it was one of those moments where a character FINALLY does the thing you've been shouting at the tv for them to do. Maybe, I'm crazy but I actually really liked this movie and have even recommended it to some of my friends and family, and I can say, in complete honesty, it's one of the better horror movies to come out recently- which, admittedly, isn't saying a whole lot, I know. But give it a chance, because you might actually side with me on the opinion that Fear succeeds at what it intended to be: a casual, fun, spooky watch to curl up on the couch with your friends or loved one on the weekend and have a good time.

An overall bad movie based on the terrible script, story and characters. First of all, i like horror movies as well as movies like Scream, IT, Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, The Conjuring, Child's Play, Etc. But this movie doesn't meet up to my expectations. Feels like a low budget film with terrible characters. Feels like a i regret watching this. Also it's boring, not scary at all but there are some scenes that were frightening if you are a horror fan like me. But to me.......... It feels Meh? The creators named this movie Fear. More like No Fear At All. Final Thoughts: I 100% don't recommend this movie.

This movie is really the worst film I've seen this entire year. Oh, the production values are fine.
But the rest of the movie is a mess.
The story is down right dumb.
The acting is nealy laughable. These are inferior, unseasoned, actors who can't act their way out of a paper bag.
The direction is practically non-existent. There is no tension whatsoever. But there is also no action. The movie barely moves forward with the bad actors reading their lines and nothing happening as the minutes, which feel like hours, tick by..
I thought this was supposed to be a horror / thriller?????
It's not. It's an abject failure on every level that you should run from unless you need some sleep.

As I sat down to watch the 2023 horror movie "Fear" from director Deon Taylor, I had not heard about it. So I wasn't really sure what I was in for here. Not that it really mattered, because with it being a horror movie then my interest was already hooked.
The storyline in "Fear", as written by John Ferry and Deon Taylor, was adequate. The movie starts out well enough, and gradually things start to intensify and build up. And I will say that the way that the narrative was constructed definitely worked well, because director Deon Taylor gradually added upon the layers of fear and confusion. However, it just went a bit too far, and the narrative sort of tumbled into utter confusion, and I have to admit that throughout the last quarter of the movie, my interest in the narrative was starting to wane, simply because I didn't really know what was going on anymore.
The acting performances in "Fear" were good, and they had a good cast ensemble. Sure, I wasn't familiar with a single actor or actress on the cast list, but they put on good performances in bringing their characters to life on the screen.
Visually then "Fear" works well. Director Deon Taylor is good at using even the simplest of tricks in order to build up atmosphere and to gently tear at the audience's threshold of fear. I liked the special effects in the movie.
While "Fear" certainly is a watchable horror movie, it felt like a movie with a social commentary that would have had a much bigger impact one or two years ago. The whole Covid-19 pandemic and the outbreaks of fear that followed in its wake is what the writers are utilizing throughout the course of the movie in some extend, and it just feels a bit out of place and without much punch and impact now in 2023.
My rating of "Fear" lands on a five out of ten stars, simply because the movie's narrative just spiraled out of control throughout the last quarter of the movie, making it feel like a slap to the face after having sat through a rather intense three-quarters of the movie.

Only saw this movie cause of Joseph Sikora and I wish I haven't. The whole "fear" idea has been explored a billion times in Horror movies by now, and this movie added no big original twist to it. I love Joseph and that's the only reason this gets a 5. But please, leave these roles to social media influencers. You are a very talented actor and roles in shows like "Ozark" and "Power" suit you more. Hoping to see you in a quality role soon.
If you're going to make a horror movie, please be aware that there are millions of very similar horror movies and if you want to push through the competition, you need to be original.

The pandemic woke thang wasn't a great start.
There was plenty of opportunities to relish in the back story of the lodge.
The scene where the bday lady and boyfriend about realizing what the lodge was, was poorly scripted. Along with the generic fire scene that we've seen a thousand times. This made it predictable and utterly boring.
The acting was great and believable. They all did really well with what they had to work with. The characters were not likable and irritating at times.
Many of the scenes felt extremely rushed. Generic, unoriginal and boring most of the time. Lots of potential that never quite gets there.
It's barely a one-time watch.

I enjoyed this movie. The first 15 minutes was a little slow. But it was building the setup. I like the characters. One of the actresses, with short hair, is perfect for horror! Loved her scared expressions. Lots of dark and scary moments as movie moves along. Loved the hidden clues and older photos shown throughout the movie. Years ago I wrote a short story about fears and how they can get the best of you. Was neat to see this theme brought out in a movie. Rented it on Amazon yesterday! Cool idea. I liked that the main characters were writers. The chest in the basement was very eerie. And the ending makes me wonder if there will be a part 2, so more souls can be collected. Good movie! I was satisfied.

This movie is better than people are giving it credit for. Don't go see a low budget movie and expect a multi million dollar masterpiece. It has a great story and the acting was better than most low budget movies. It had some good scares and scenery. If you're a true horror fan and like psychological horror and supernatural horror then I'd recommend seeing this at least once. The atmosphere and setting are part of what makes this movie better. It has some intense moments that are unexpected and gives you the feeling of what could really happen in certain situations. I hope that more independent horror films make their way into theaters.

Holy crap! This is one stinker of a movie!
On the whole, I was impressed by the director and producers' inability to impart scares, thrills, or even a plot that anyone could care less about.
Everything is derivative and, well, rubbish.
Acting: not really.
Casting: predictable.
Dialog: Twonk shurk bing bwah now?
The so called horror is driven by two things: awful (AWFUL) hammy music, and dire sfx (which pretty much takes over the film's denouement.
I watched this film wavering between a boredom incepted fugue state and abject despair that anyone could have actually produced this nonsense.
And yet, I watched the whole thing, because it really is that bad. See it. Feel it. Laugh at it. Then forget it!

For some reason I was pretty excited to see this movie, I guess I liked the cover and the plot summary sounded interesting as well. After seeing the ratings for the movie I had a suspicion that this movie might not be great but I still watched it and sadly I got disappointed. I don't think it's terrible but I would have loved for this movie to be way better. The execution was pretty generic and weird at times even though they could have done so much more with that premise. Also there are lots of loud noises and flashing lights with supposedly "scary" images that didn't quite work. The movie is also not really well paced and only in the third act it starts to get tense. For the most time the movie has no clear direction and is all over the place which leads to confusion in a movie that could be so simple but effective. [4,1/10]
