Maliciously bullied by the boys at his school, 12-year-old Owen (Kodi Smit-McPhee) feels lonely and outcast until he meets 12-year-old Abby (Chloë Grace Moretz), who has just moved into the neighboring apartment along with her father (Richard Jenkins). Also lonely and outcast, Abby strikes up a friendship with Owen, and the two decide to "go steady" until Owen learns that Abby is actually a centuries-old vampire. Now Owen must decide whether Abby is really his friend or pure evil.

Let Me In is a remake of the 2008 Swedish movie Deixa Ela Entrar (2008), which was based on the novel Låt den rätte komma in (2004) by Swedish author John Ajvide Lindqvist. The first American edition of the book was called Let Me In (2007) as the publishers found the title too long, but it is now out in both the UK and the USA under the title, Let the Right One In. The original screenplay was adapted for this movie by American filmmaker Matt Reeves, who also directed the movie.

According to producer Simon Oakes:

...the story was so great, so beautiful, that it should be seen by a bigger audience. So I was always saying to myself, people in Manhattan have seen it, guys like you [genre journalists/fans] because it's in your wheelhouse, in New York, in Chicago, in Chelsea, in Notting Hill, in London but no one in Glasgow or Edinburgh or Bristol or Idaho or Pittsburgh has seen this film. It's a story that needs to be seen by a wider audience. Then it came down to [the question], how do you achieve that? By paying homage to the original.

No, this was actually Abby yelling at him. As seen when Abby "vamped-out" in front of Owen, she tells him to go away and says it in a deep, demonic, gravelly, male-sounding voice.

In the Swedish movie, the vampire Eli (Lina Leandersson) was shown to be an emasculated boy, but that part was dropped from this remake. There are scenes where Abby is sounding cryptic, with statements like "Would you like me if I'm not a girl" and "I'm not a girl" that could be taken that way by Owen since, at the time, he isn't aware of what she is. In the novel, there is a flashback to hundreds of years before the story, which details a strange ritual in the banquet hall of a castle filled with children. In the movie's deleted scenes, it shows her as a girl being attacked.

After killing the Detective (Elias Koteas), Abby tells Owen that she must go away, but she does one last favor for Owen. The evening Owen is to start his swimming lessons, the bullies—Kenny (Dylan Minnette), Mark (Jimmy 'Jax' Pinchak), and Donald (Nicolai Dorian) along with Kenny's older brother Jimmy (Brett DelBuono)—start a fire in the dumpster behind the gym in an attempt to draw Mr Zoric (Ritchie Coster) away from the pool area. Jimmy then forces Owen into the water and gives him an ultimatum: either stay under for three minutes or have one of his eyes poked out. He then pushes Owen underwater and holds him there. A minute later, pandemonium breaks out, and Jimmy's hold on Owen is released. When Owen comes to the surface, gasping for air, he sees that Abby has killed and dismembered all four bullies. In the final scene, Owen sits on a train with a large crate at his feet. After the conductor has collected Owen's ticket and moved on, a rapping in Morse Code can be heard coming from inside the crate. "Hi," it says. Owen raps back, "hugs and kisses." He then takes a bite from a Now and Later piece and sings quietly to himself, "Eat some now, save some for later."

In the middle of the film: Owen - Hi; Abby - Hi. At the end of the film: Abby - Hi; Owen - IL (I think they screwed up and missed off the Y).
