‘Night Court’ Pilot Starring John Larroquette and Melissa Rauch Ordered by NBC
Image
Court is back in session at NBC. The network has formally given a pilot order to a spinoff of “Night Court” led by original series star John Larroquette and “The Big Bang Theory’s” Melissa Rauch.

The pilot, produced by Warner Bros. Television and Universal Television, was penned by “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” production alum Dan Rubin, who will serve as both executive producer and writer on the reboot.

The original series that aired on NBC from 1984-1992 starred Harry Anderson as an offbeat judge who worked the late shift at a Manhattan court house. Rauch will play the jurist daughter of Anderson’s Judge Harry Stone. She presides over the same court and tries to bring order to its crew of oddballs and cynics, most notably former night court prosecutor Dan Fielding (Larroquette).

Executive producing alongside Rubin are Rauch and her spouse Winston Rauch for After January Productions. Larroquette is also executive producing.

Image
Exclusive: Night Court is back in session. NBC is developing a follow-up to the classic legal comedy series, with co-star John Larroquette set to reprise his Emmy-winning role and produce. The Big Bang Theory alumna Melissa Rauch executive produces the reboot for Warner Bros TV.

Written/executive produced by Dan Rubin (The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) based on the original series created by Reinhold Weege, the multi-camera Night Court centers on the unapologetic optimist judge Abby Stone, daughter of the late Harry Stone, who follows in her father’s footsteps as she presides over the night shift of a Manhattan arraignment court and tries to bring order to its crew of oddballs and cynics, most notably former night court prosecutor Dan Fielding (Larroquette).

The original Night Court, which aired on NBC for nine seasons from 1984-92 and earned three Outstanding Comedy Series Emmy nominations, followed the proceedings during the night shift of a Manhattan municipal court,...

Gail Lerner Answers Prentice Penny’s Call & Vows To Help Even The Sliding Scale As She Shares Her Own TV Blackface Experience – Guest Column
Image
Editors Note: Earlier this week, Prentice Penny, showrunner of HBO’s Insecure, wrote a guest column this week for Deadline reflecting on the recent string of high-profile comedy series pulling older episodes featuring blackface scenes. In it, he wrote about Hollywood’s “sliding scale” that made it possible for so many episodes of so many series to make it through all layers of approval to the air with the offensive material. He called upon peers to “be uncomfortable and accountable,” urging them to make 60% of their shows’ staffs on every level people of color. The column received a strong response and opened a conversation. After we published it, black-ish executive producer Gail Lerner, a veteran comedy writer-producer and friend of Penny’s, reached out with her own response, sharing her internal struggle over an old TV episode featuring a blackface-related gag she was involved with, while offering her own plan...

Carissa's Corner: Is Falling Water Canceled? Why are We In Love with Love Triangles?
Hey guys, I'm back with more chitter chatter about TV!

For those of you who were here for the debut of Carissa's Corner, thank you so much for reading. It gave me the warm fuzzies.

To the rest of you, welcome aboard! My mind is a crazy place, and I'm here to dump it all out, so we can discuss it productively. Or something like that. Let's go!

I know everybody loves The Good Doctor, but I'm not a fan. Still, I read all the reviews because that's my job.

I was shocked to learn that not only has Will Yun Lee been extraordinarily busy with Netflix's Altered Carbon (He was the best part of the series for me), he's also now taken up residence on The Good Doc.

TV Review: ABC's 'Mixology' is a toxic brew
Vanessa Lengies, Adam Campbell, Kate Simses, Frankie Shaw, Blake Lee, Craig Frank, Ginger Gonzaga, Andrew Santino, Alexis Carra, and Adan Canto in Mixology (2013)
Never begin a relationship with a lie.  That's not wisdom I got from watching ABC's new sitcom "Mixology," which actually preaches quite the opposite. "Mixology" strongly advocates that the best way to get laid involves some level of performativity or outright lying. So maybe it's appropriate, actually, that "Mixology" begins literally every episode with a lie. "This is the story of 10 strangers, one night and all the ridiculous things we do to find love," declares the opening voiceover to "Mixology." My ass. "Mixology" is as much about people on a quest for love as "Raiders of the Lost Ark" is about an archeologist on a quest for snakes.  When you get down to it, "Mixology" is about 10 hateful people looking for sex, irrespective of the lack of chemistry between either the characters or the actors. Set across one night, "Mixology" is desperately invested in making you care whether or not sex will happen,...

Scandal! Revenge! Grey’S Anatomy! Arrow! Bates Motel! Survivor! Arrow! The TV Addict Week in Rewind
Quickest Turnaround: Lifetime will air “Jodi Arias: Dirty Little Secret” — a movie covering the titular character’s murder of Travis Alexander — on June 22, just a month after her conviction.

Biggest Surprise: Elementary opted not to end their first season on a cliffhanger.

Unhappiest Fans: Despite early buzz that Happy Endings would be picked up by another outlet if ABC axed the series, it’s now looking as if the show might be dead in the water.

Unkindest Cut: Only two weeks after All My Children and One Life To Live hit Hulu with new episodes airing four days a week, production company Prospect Park announced that starting Monday, the soaps will only air twice a week.

Best Showdown: Literally an entire season in the making, Calzona’s Greys Anatomy blowout was a stunner.

Worst Trend: Brian Grazer indicated that producers of the Friday Night Lights movie might ask fans to help fund the movie.

CBS Picks Up ‘Crazy Ones’, Greg Garcia, ‘Mom’, Rob Greenberg, ‘Hostages’, ‘Intelligence’
Update: I hear among the pilots remaining in serious contention are dramas Backstrom and Beverly Hills Cop and comedy Friends With Better Lives. I also gear that the serialized Hostages, which had been rumored for a midseason run, has received a 15-episode order and may air as a limited run. Previous, 2:30 Pm: CBS is going for star power — both in front and behind the camera — with its series pickups. The network has ordered projects starring Robin Williams, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Anna Faris, Allison Janney, Will Arnett, Kal Penn, Tony Shalhoub, Jerry O’Connell, Toni Collette, Dylan McDermott, Josh Holloway, and Marg Helgenberger from writers/producers Chuck Lorre, Greg Garcia, David E. 'Family Tools': Kyle Bornheimer, Leah Remini And J.K. Simmons
Kyle Bornheimer at an event for Turma 94: O Grande Encontro (2015)
ABC premiered another late edition to their Wednesday comedy lineup with "Family Tools." Kyle Bornheimer portrays Jack Shea, a bumbling doofus with a good heart who returns home to take over his father's handyman business. J.K. Simmons is as crusty as ever as Jack's dad, Tony, who isn't at all keen about his son taking over the family business. But by the end of this pilot, he'd already had two heart attacks, so it was pretty clear he needed to take a step back.

Leah Remini was the mastermind behind the whole thing as Tony's little sister, Terry. After Tony's second heart attack, Terry forces him to have a heart-to-heart with his son, but Tony is a man's man meaning he doesn't really know how to.

He admits he's tougher on Jack because Jack's his son. "Yeah, that’s it. That’s all I got!" Tony said. "I’m not a shrink,...

'Family Tools': Leah Remini previews her new ABC comedy, talks adjusting to single-camera filming after 'King of Queens'
When ABC's newest sitcom "Family Tools" premieres on Wednesday (May 1), it'll mark Leah Remini's return to network comedy after her long-running CBS hit "King of Queens" went off the air in 2007. It's also the first time Remini's worked in a single-camera series, as opposed to the traditional three-camera series filmed in front of a live audience that she's used to.

Remini tells Zap2It that working without an audience took some getting used to. "It's very depressing because you don't have people laughing, you know?" she says. "It's like all you've got to do is smile at somebody in the audience or say hello or sign a script and [they scream] and you're like, 'I love this!' You get that validation, you know?"

Silence is golden on a single-camera set, something Remini likens to a funeral. "You're not allowed to laugh, no one can make a noise when you're filming,...

ABC's 'Family Tools' tries to build a successful sitcom
Leah Remini in Family Tools (2013)
The blueprint: Assemble familiar character actors into an on-screen family, then nail it to one of the last new series of the television season.

Premiering Wednesday, May 1, the ABC sitcom "Family Tools" revolves around a passing of the torch as a heart attack forces veteran handyman Tony (J.K. Simmons, "The Closer") to turn his business over to his ne'er-do-well son Jack (Kyle Bornheimer, "She's Out of My League"). Though his aunt Terry (Leah Remini, "The King of Queens") offers Jack encouragement, he has much to prove as he sets out to move the family trade forward.

"Family Tools" is based on the British show "White Van Man." Writer-producer Bobby Bowman ("Raising Hope") did the Americanization and defines that title term as a "sort of fix-it guy. The direct translation would be 'jack-of-all-trades'; that's why I named (the central character) Jack. The British version was Ollie. I don't know any Ollies.

'Family Tools' Review: Don't Watch This Show
Kyle Bornheimer at an event for Turma 94: O Grande Encontro (2015)
For some unknown reason, network TV executives are convinced that Kyle Bornheimer is destined to be a huge sitcom star. In 2008 he starred in CBS' Worst Week (cancelled after 16 episodes). In 2010 he starred in ABC's Romantically Challenged (cancelled after four episodes). And in 2011, he starred in NBC's Perfect Couples (cancelled after 11 episodes).

Now he's in ABC's new comedy Family Tools, premiering Wednesday, May 1 at 8:30pm. But surely this time he'll finally break through, right?...

CBS Picks Up Four New Drama Series & Two Comedies: Is A ‘CSI’ Spinoff Going Away?
CBS has officially made its new series orders for next season. The network is likely putting a pin in its plans for comedy expansion by only picking two new half-hour series, the multi-camera Partners and Friend Me. CBS also showed that it is not ready to launch its first single-camera comedy since Worst Week in 2008 by passing on Nick Stoller’s well-regarded Entry Level. The network is loading up on the drama side with four new series, the contemporary Sherlock Holmes reboot Elementary, period drama Vegas (formerly Ralph Lamb), legal drama Made In Jersey (form. Baby Big Shot) and cop drama Golden Boy. The order of four new drama series does not bode well for the network’s bubble dramas. When CBS picked up four new dramas in 2010, it killed four existing dramas, including veterans The Ghost Whisperer and Cold Case. Last year, the network picked up four new drama series and canceled three.

Will & Grace Producer Signs on as Showrunner on NBC’s ‘Animal Practice’
Gail Lerner has signed on to be the new showrunner on NBC’s single-camera comedy, Animal Practice. As the name of the series suggests, the comedy focuses on a veterinarian, played by Weeds star Justin Kirk.

Lerner most recently worked on ABC’s Happy Endings. She also worked on Will & Grace, Back to You and Worst Week.

Animal Practice was created by Brian Gatewood and Alessandro Tanaka. Executive producers include Alex Tanaka, Ravi Nandan, and Scot Armstrong as well as Anthony and Joe Russo, who are directors on the pilot.

In Animal Practice, Kirk is a off-beat doctor, who hates humans but loves animals.

Exclusive: Gail Lerner has come aboard NBC’s newly picked up comedy series Animal Practice as executive producer/showrunner. Created by feature writers Brian Gatewood and Alessandro Tanaka, Animal Practice is a single-camera office comedy centered on a “House”-like veterinarian (Justin Kirk) who loves animals but usually hates their owners (especially the new woman who runs the clinic). This marks the first executive producer/showrunner gig for Lerner, who is coming off a stint as a co-executive producer on ABC’s Happy Endings this season. On the Universal TV/American Work-produced Animal Practice, she will serve as an executive producer alongside Gatewood, Alex Tanaka, Ravi Nandan, Scot Armstrong and the pilot’s directors Anthony and Joe Russo. Lerner, repped by Vision Art’s Scott Schwartz, previously worked on Will & Grace, Back To You and Worst Week. Related: ‘Animal Practice’ To Recast Female Lead...

Amanda Peet, Jeffrey Tambor, and David Walton in Reforma Geral (2012)
Denette Wilford: Get 'Bent' Before It's Gone
Amanda Peet, Jeffrey Tambor, and David Walton in Reforma Geral (2012)
Why do "Bent" and leading man David Walton get no love?

In ensemble comedies, there's always one actor that manages to transform their character and inadvertently transcend the others -- even just a little. It's a totally subjective thing, but as far as I'm concerned, Monica Geller ("Friends"), Jack McFarland ("Will & Grace"), Brad Williams ("Happy Endings"), Ellie Torres ("Cougar Town") and Jay Pritchett ("Modern Family") could or can do no wrong, and they shine just a teensy bit brighter than the rest.

Aside from those characters, my new favourite is Pete Riggins, played to scene-stealing perfection by David Walton. Oh, David Walton. (If this was Twitter, the hashtag would be #swoon.) He isn't exactly sublime or particularly innovative with his performances (based on his latest series, "Bent," the criminally undervalued "Perfect Couples") and he was the one notable exception in the dismal "100 Questions." In fact, he's really a two-note pony...

Zachary Levi to Star in Fox Pilot Let It Go; J.K. Simmons Joins ABC Pilot White Van Man
Two of your favorite actors signed on to star in network sitcom pilots tonight. We'll start with Zachary Levi. Now that Chuck is off the air, Levi is free to play the field. THR reports the former NBC star is jumping over to Fox for the single-camera comedy pilot Let It Go. Levi will play a husband who tries to "navigate, negotiate, and sometimes manipulate society’s unspoken rules." Nothing special about the premise, so we'll have to see how Fox fills out the cast. The other main roles are the wife, her sister, and Levi's best friend. DJ Nash ('Til Death) wrote the script and will executive produce along with Peter Tolan (Rescue Me) and Michael Wimer (2012). Hit the jump for details on J.K. Simmons' new pilot on ABC, White Man Van. Simmons somehow sneaked 7 seasons and 103 episodes of The Closer into the last years. I don't...

The single-camera White Van Man is a blue collar ensemble based on the British format and centers on a man (Bornheimer) who is forced to put his dreams on hold in order to take over the family handyman business from his father. Taking a page out of White Collar‘s book, Breakout Kings features fugitives chasing down fugitives.

CBS Greenlights Nick Stoller Comedy Pilot
CBS has given the pilot green light to a comedy from feature writer-director Nick Stoller (The Muppets), Chernin Entertainment and 20th Century Fox TV. Stoller wrote and will direct the untitled project loosely based on his real-life experiences. It is a twenty-something ensemble comedy about a guy who gets his heart broken by his girlfriend and now has to work one cubicle away from her at an ad agency. Stoller, Katherine Pope and Peter Chernin are executive producing. This is a rare venturing into single-camera comedy for CBS, which has built its comedy success on multi-camera sitcoms. Its very few single-camera series, including Worst Week and Welcome To The Captain, have fizzled. UTA-repped Stoller, who started off on Undeclared, is a frequent collaborator with Jason Segel, star of CBS’ long-running comedy How I Met Your Mother. The two co-wrote The Muppets, and Stoller directed the Segel-penned Forgetting Sarah Marshall. This...

Breakout Kings: The Complete First Season DVD Arrives March 13th
Laz Alonso, Malcolm Goodwin, Domenick Lombardozzi, Brooke Nevin, Jimmi Simpson, and Serinda Swan in Agentes Fora da Lei (2011)
There's no escape when Breakout Kings comes to DVD on March 13 from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. Don't miss the chance to catch up on the gripping suspense, meet the provocative characters and experience the non-stop action that helped Breakout Kings Season 1, post record ratings for an original drama series on A&E.

Now renewed for its second season, Breakout Kings follows some unconventional partners working to catch convicts on the run. Driven by the fact that there are few things more dangerous than a prisoner who has just escaped and tired of following protocol, veteran U.S. Marshals Charlie DuChamp (Laz Alonso) and Ray Zancanelli (Domenick Lombardozzi) are taking an unorthodox approach to their work: using former fugitives to catch fugitives. If they agree to help, the fugitives' sentences will be reduced for each escaped convict they bring in. However, if any of them should try to escape themselves their sentences will be doubled.

Benjamin Koldyke and Amaury Nolasco in De Saia Justa (2012)
The Friends Mafia Takes Over Hollywood
Benjamin Koldyke and Amaury Nolasco in De Saia Justa (2012)
Next month, a new sitcom called "Work It," about two out-of-work salesmen who dress up as women to get jobs, will make its debut on ABC. There's nothing new about the premise -- Tom Hanks and Peter Scolari covered the same ground on the early-80s sitcom "Bosom Buddies" -- and the tone isn't exactly novel either. The stars of the show, Ben Koldyke and Amaury Nolasco, are operating in the prevailing frat-boy mode perfected by Bradley Cooper and Seann William Scott.

In May, an 84-second trailer of "Work It" hit the Internet, instantly attracting more blogger rage than most shows accumulate over the course of several seasons. Gobsmacked by the very fact that "This got made! And is going to series!", The Futon Critic lambasted the show's "limp attempts at misogyny," "groan worthy madcappery" and "Mrs. Doubtfire hijinx."
