During development, series writers visited Ukrainian schools and interviewed teenagers on condition of anonymity. The storylines involving bullying, online harassment, sexual identity and suicide were responsible for a 600% increase in calls to the non-governmental mental health helpline La Strada-Ukraine.
The title of the series is a reference to the belief that swallows are the first sign of spring.
According to BBC News, this series has helped many to stop taking part in the "Blue Whale Challenge", a social network "game" reportedly consisting of a series of tasks leading to self-harm and possibly requiring the player to commit suicide.
The first season was filmed in two-and-a-half months with a small budget and unknown actors. All the scripts were proofread by lawyers and psychologists.
