‘Americana’ Review: A Neo-Western Tarantino Knockoff Saunters into the Gunfight 30 Years Late
Image
In “Americana,” half a dozen ruthless characters (including a van full of stereotype-defying Native Americans) are desperate to get their hands on a Lakota ghost shirt, a sacred garment believed to protect whoever wears it from white men’s bullets. Considering the sheer amount of ammo spent trying to obtain it, such a shirt sure would come in handy … though no one thinks to put the darn thing on in a stylish genre mashup that takes a page (or more) from Tarantino, remixing everything from classic Westerns to stylish neo-noirs such as “Blood Simple” and “The Last Stop in Yuma County.”

Debuting at SXSW in 2023, then trapped in limbo for two years amid the Bron bankruptcy, the South Dakota-set “Americana” marks the arrival of a promising new imitation artist in writer-director Tony Tost, a published poet turned TV showrunner (“Damnation”) whose first feature arrives more polished than most filmmakers’ third or fourth.

Evil Dead Burn Is Now Filming; First Official Production Photos Revealed
Image
When are people going to realize that reading aloud from that damn book just isn't going to end well?

Following the recent news that Sébastien Vaniček's Evil Dead Burn was preparing to shoot in New Zealand, the filmmaker has officially announced that cameras are now rolling, while taking to social media to share a first look at the movie's logo and a production still.

Vaniček made his feature directorial debut with Vermin/Vermine, aka Infested, which focused on the residents of a rundown French apartment building attempting to survive when an army of venomous, rapidly reproducing spiders invade.

The movie garnered a lot of acclaim, and won Best Picture and Best Director in its North American premiere at Fantastic Fest. It was also invited to the Sitges Film Festival, where it earned a nomination for Best Motion Picture and won a Special Jury Prize.

Early last year, we got...

Sam Raimi's Popular $303M Horror Franchise Gets Major Filming Update
Image
The massively popular Evil Dead franchise will take its next step forward in 2026 with Evil Dead Burn, and the production process got a major update straight from the movie's writer/director, Sébastien Vaniček. After a long hiatus, the Evil Dead franchise was rebooted in 2013 with Evil Dead by Fede Álvarez (Alien: Romulus), and followed up with Lee Cronin's Evil Dead Rise in 2023.

The franchise's current cadence is to have Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert, the originators of the Evil Dead series, hand-pick a new director for each new movie. Each director brings their own unique style and flair to the base concept of Deadites wreaking havoc on the mortal world, and while there are some commonalities and Easter eggs, each new movie can comfortably be treated as a stand-alone.

The latest choice is 28-year-old writer and director Sébastien Vaniček, who put his stamp on the horror genre with the...

‘Abraham’s Boys: A Dracula Story’ Review: Joe Hill Adaptation Is (Un)dead on Arrival
Image
Have you ever wandered the post-apocalyptic wasteland with a nuclear bomb in your pocket? I sure have. And although it may not seem like the “Fallout” games have much to do with writer/director Natasha Kermani’s “Abraham’s Boys: A Dracula Story” — adapted from the horror tale by Joe Hill (“The Black Phone”) — the film evokes a feeling that’s familiar to many gamers. It’s the one where you hang onto your best weapon the whole time, waiting for the right moment to use it, only to reach the end and realize it’s too late. You wasted every chance.

“Abraham’s Boys” has many secret weapons. The film’s stars, Titus Welliver (“Bosch”) and Jocelin Donahue (“The Last Stop in Yuma County”) are two of the best in the game. They play Abraham and Mina Van Helsing, characters from the pages of “Dracula” who married after the death of Mina’s husband.

Sébastien Vaniček's Evil Dead Burn recently entered production in New Zealand, with Dune: Part Two's Souheila Yacoub set to play the lead role. Now, Deadline is reporting that the movie has rounded out its cast with three new additions.

Hunter Doohan, Luciane Buchanan (The Night Agent), and Tandi Wright (Pearl) have signed on for the horror spin-off, but details on their characters are still locked away in the Necronomicon.

Doohan recently appeared as graffiti artist/serial killer Muse in Daredevil: Born Again.

Evil Dead Burn: Horror Spin-Off Finds Its Lead In Dune: Part Two Actress Souheila Yacoub
Image
Sébastien Vaniček's Evil Dead Burn is preparing to enter production in New Zealand, and Variety reports that Dune: Part Two's Souheila Yacoub is set to play the lead role.

'Evil Dead Burn' Sets Release Date with 'Dune: Part Two's Souheila Yacoub as Lead
Image
Deadites rejoice! New Line and Sony have officially set a release date of July 24, 2026, for a new Evil Dead film, which will see Dune: Part Twoactress Souheila Yacoub take point as the movie's protagonist. It's been two long years since the release of Evil Dead Rise in 2023, which went on to gross $147 million at the box office. Before then, there hadn't been a new film in the franchise in 10 years, so it's nice to see that Campbell and Raimi are delivering on their promise to be more consistent with new releases.

Per Deadline, New Line and Sony unveiled the newly minted release date for the next Evil Dead movie today, which will be directed by Sébastien Vaniček. Fans will recall that the French director's debut horror film Infested was a big hit with audiences (and Stephen King!) when it hit Shudder last year, so he's more than capable of helming an Evil Dead project.

This 12-Year-Old Horror Remake Is Scarier Than the Original in Every Way (& You Can Stream It for Free in April)
Image
Fede Álvarez's blood-soaked Evil Dead remake will be available to stream for free starting April 1.

Just over 20 years after Sam Raimi's Army of Darkness landed in theaters, Álvarez helped usher in a new era for the iconic horror franchise with his 2013 reboot, Evil Dead. The film, which lands on Tubi next month, tossed aside the more comedic elements of the prior films in favor of a darker and meaner tone but doesn't forget to include tons of blood and gore, which remains a franchise staple. Álvarez's more sinister reboot proved a success as the film earned $97.5 million at the worldwide box office and was generally well-received at the time, having earned a 63% Rotten Tomatoes score.

The film centers around Mia, a drug addict who heads to a remote cabin in the woods with her brother and a group of friends to help rid herself of the habit. However,...

The Last Stop In Yuma County

When it first emerged in 2023, indie thriller The Last Stop In Yuma County didn’t have a big platform, despite screening at the likes of Fantastic Fest, but it did wow audiences wherever it went, gradually building up a cult following – and with good reason. The début directorial feature from Francis Galluppi, it’s funny, stylish, clever, packed with unforgettable characters and gripping throughout. Now it’s finally becoming available to viewers in the UK, thanks to a Blu-ray release from Arrow.

Meeting stars Jim Cummings (who plays a hapless knife salesman) and Richard Brake (who plays a bank robber on the run), I told them that one of the reasons I think I haven’t been able to get it out of my head is that in all the months since I first saw it I haven’t been able to figure out...

Today brings with it some groovy news, particularly for those who are fans of the "Evil Dead" movies. After being away from the big screen for a decade, the franchise has roared back to life thanks to the success of 2023's "Evil Dead Rise." Now, the powers the be are trying to keep the good, bloody vibes going with multiple new films, one of which now has a title and a release window. Look forward to 2026, people.

Earlier this year, we learned that writer/director Sébastien Vaniček ("Infested") is making a new "Evil Dead" movie. Details have been few and far between since the announcement was made earlier this year, but the filmmaker recently took to Instagram to share the front script page for the latest entry in the franchise, which is officially titled "Evil Dead Burn." Armie Hammer to Make Acting Return with Indie Western ‘Frontier Crucible’
Image
Armie Hammer’s outlaw days in Hollywood are coming to an end, thanks to indie Western film “Frontier Crucible.”

Hammer will return to acting for the first time since being accused of sexual assault in 2021. After the allegations, which also suggested Hammer had cannibalistic tendencies, the “Call Me by Your Name” star was dropped from roles in Amazon’s “Shotgun Wedding,” Paramount’s “The Offer,” Starz’s “Gaslit,” and Broadway’s “The Minutes.” The accusations were investigated by the LAPD; no charges were filed.

Now, after Hammer has said he was “not welcome” in Hollywood anymore, the “Lone Ranger” actor is playing one of three outlaw criminals for “Frontier Crucible.”

The feature is produced by “Bone Tomahawk” and “Dragged Across Concrete” producer Dallas Sonnier, and is being billed as “Reservoir Dogs” meets “Bone Tomahawk.” The film is set in the Arizona Territory of the 1870s, and follows a former soldier...

Armie Hammer Books Acting Return With Western ‘Frontier Crucible’
Image
Exclusive: Armie Hammer, who hasn’t acted in more than three years following 2021 sexual assault allegations, is set to return to a film set with western Frontier Crucible.

This is the project we revealed yesterday, starring Thomas Jane (The Predator) and produced by Bone Tomahawk and Dragged Across Concrete producer Dallas Sonnier. Filming is due to get underway on the independently-financed film next month in Monument Valley and Prescott, Arizona.

Hammer’s A-list Hollywood career was derailed back in 2021 when multiple women came forward with claims of abuse against him. Hammer denied the allegations but had to abandon several projects and was dropped by his talent agency and publicist. After an investigation into Hammer by the LA County District Attorney and LAPD, they declined to pursue criminal charges against him, citing insufficient evidence. He remains without representation other than his lawyer.

On Monday, The Social Network, Lone Ranger and Call Me By Your Name...

Western Movies Haven't Been This Good in a Long Time
Image
Quick Links The 21st Century Western So Far Why Has 2024 Been Such a Successful Year for Westerns? Where Can the Western Go From Here?

If 2024 is anything to go by, the Western isn't dead. This year, Kevin Costner debuted the first of his self-directed Horizon series at Cannes, a 3-hour self-financed passion project. If Costner can get his 3-hour Western epic shown at Cannes, in light of the poor reviews it received, the genre must still have some sway in the film landscape.

Movies like The Thicket, which has just been released, The Last Stop in Yuma County, The Dead Don't Hurt, The Settlers, and Place of Bones have seen the genre face renewed popularity and attention. It isn't just the obvious modern production value that separates these 2024 releases from the Westerns of old, but the transformed attitude to the West's inhabitants. Sympathetic, more realistic views of settlers only began...

Greedy People Review | Coen-Brother Vibes Help Boost Hillbilly Noir
Image
Hillbilly thrillers (or hillbillers) is making a comeback, it seems. Two of the best movies of the year have already tackled that kind of vibe the incredible Laroy, Texas, and the stellar ensemble film The Last Stop in Yuma County. Now, the cartoonish nature of Lionsgate's soon-to-be underrated Greedy People might be dubbed its own brand of Southern noir, given that its elements seem to tug its tone all over the place.

Some of it works, some is perhaps too derivative. Brace yourselves for a whole lot of moving parts, including some virtually blink-and-you-miss-it cameos here and there, followed by gravely serious sequences of heartfelt drama that may feel out of place juxtaposed to some vintage Coen brothers humor and tension This comedy-drama dynamic may make Potsy Ponciroli's latest film, from a script by Mike Vukadinovich, feel like a knockoff take combines winning elements from different movies but as Russell Crowe once said,...

Evil Dead Animated Series In The Works With Bruce Campbell To Return As Ash Williams

The Evil Dead continues to rise! Following the success of Lee Cronin's splatter-filled Evil Dead Rise last year, the pipeline for the comedy horror franchise Sam Raimi built has just gotten busier and busier. Already on the way are two new Evil Dead movies, one from Vermin director Sébastien Vaniček and another from Francis Galluppi (The Last Stop In Yuma County). Now, as revealed by Ash Williams himself Mr Bruce Campbell in an interview with EW, the parasitic soul-snaffling Deadites are set to be drawn to life — or at least more undeath — anew in an original animated TV take on the series.

Speaking to EW ahead of the release of his Satanic Panic set Peacock series Hysteria, Campbell confirmed that whilst he officially retired from the role of supermarket clerk-turned-Promised One Ash Williams in live-action when Ash Vs Evil Dead ended in 2018, he will lend his voice to a new Evil Dead animation.

Animated version of Evil Dead is still in development, Bruce Campbell says he'll voice Ash again
Image
Sam Raimi's iconic horror franchise Evil Dead is still going strong after all this time. Most recently, fans were treated to last year's fantastically fun Evil Dead Rise, but there's still plenty more on the way, including at least two more live-action movies.

But franchise star Bruce Campbell, who originated the role of Ash in the 1981 film and has reprised the role many times since in different capacities, recently provided Entertainment Weekly with an update on the franchise's future, including confirming that the long-gestating animated series is still in the works.

While it's unlikely we'll see Campbell return as Ash in a significant live-action role, the actor did say he'd happily voice the character for an animated spinoff.

We are developing an animated version, like a series. I'll do that. I'll do Ash's voice all day long, because my voice hasn't aged as much as I have.

What he...

Bruce Campbell Gives Blunt Opinion of the Evil Dead Franchise's Future
Image
Known for playing the brash and sarcastic Ash Williams in the Evil Dead franchise, Bruce Campbell has never been one to dance around an opinion, even when it comes to the beloved horror franchise created by Sam Raimi back in 1981. In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Campbell was asked what the future holds for Evil Dead, and as usual, he didnt hold back.

"The future is two more damn movies. We've got two new fabulous directors that have two new scripts in the shoot, and we think we've suckered a studio into coughing up the dough for both, since they seem to still make money."

Those "two more damn movies" were announced earlier this year, and come by way of director Francis Gallupi, who helmed this years indie hit The Last Stop in Yuma County, and Sbastien Vaniek, who took point on 2024s creepy crawly spider movie, Infested. Both...

Bruce Campbell thinks Die Hard suffers from one major error
Image
Die Hard may be one of the greatest action movies of all time, but according to Bruce Campbell, it suffers from one major mistake in its premise — John McClane is just too capable.

“You want to put weird s— in the hands of someone who can’t handle it,” Campbell told Entertainment Weekly. “Like with Ash [from Evil Dead], he has no formal training whatsoever. He’s not military, he’s not CIA; he’s like a garage mechanic that’s out to save the world. That interests me! The premise of Die Hard is wrong. The guy in the air vent shouldn’t be Bruce Willis. He’s an ex-l.A. cop. The writers just took the easy train. They took the freight train to easy town.“

Campbell has a simple fix: “You put an accountant in the air vent who’s never fired a gun in his life, but ‘Oh my God,...

Jt Mollner was named best director in the same section for his “Strange Darling,” a retro-feel, horror-romance with what the jury called, “an exhilarating and engaging narrative, challenging genre and character stereotypes and subverting implicit bias.”

The awards were presented Friday evening at a closing ceremony at the Bucheon City Hall. The ceremony was followed by a screening of Soi Cheang’s smash hit Hong Kong action film “Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In.”

Evil Dead Rise director Lee Cronin partners with Blumhouse, Atomic Monster & New Line for new movie
Image
Evil Dead Rise director Lee Cronin is set to write and direct a new movie for Atomic Monster, Blumhouse, and New Line, marking the first collaboration between the merged companies and Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group.

The new Lee Cronin movie has already been given a release date of April 17, 2026, but unfortunately, that’s about all we know at this time as the plot is being kept under wraps. The film is naturally expected to be in the horror genre.

“I am super excited to be gathering up my gang of oddballs from Doppelgängers to join forces with the overlords of horror at Blumhouse and Atomic Monster,” Cronin said in a statement. “Collaborating with Jason, James and the wonderful teams from these two storied and massively successful organizations is what perfect nightmares are made of. Getting to return to New Line Cinema and my wonderful partners over there is the cherry on top.

‘Civil War,’ ‘The Fall Guy,’ and J.Lo Take #1 Spots in Home Viewing
Image
Nothing comes easy for “The Fall Guy” (Universal). Despite a home release 18 days after opening (typical for Universal) and outgrossing “Civil War” by $4 million despite playing for four weeks less, Alex Garland’s film shares top honors with the stuntman actioner this week on the VOD charts.

Both films, available for rental for 48 hours at $19.99, placed #1 on one chart apiece. “Civil War” leads at iTunes (ranking by transactions), while “Fall Guy” does at Fandango (calculated by revenue). One factor differentiating the two is that “Civil War” was released on Friday, while “Fall” debuted the previous Tuesday. That gave the latter an edge on Fandango, which has a weekly Monday-Sunday chart. It was #1 on iTunes on Wednesday through Friday, with “Civil War” #1 since.

“Fall” of course has been a disappointment in theaters. With a head of steam ahead of opening to excellent reviews, Ryan Gosling momentum, and a prime early May release date,...

‘The Last Stop in Yuma County’ Casting Director Talks Assembling Film’s ‘Dream Cast’ and Why He Enjoys Working With First-Time Directors
Image
David Guglielmo doesn’t have an acting background, but he has an empathy and understanding for actors that serves him – and others – as a casting director. It might come from his background as a writer/director, which he notes is a form of performance in many ways. “When you’re writing, you’re every character. You’re feeling those emotions and traveling with them,” he notes. “And when you direct, you have to speak the langue of actors, to understand where they’re coming from and what they need.” He adds that nothing compares to a great performance. “Even if you watch a movie that’s a little rough around the edges, if the acting is there, it’s going to pull you in. And it can be one of the most powerful experiences you can have in art.”

Guglielmo studied directing at New York City’s School of Visual Arts...

‘Godzilla x Kong’ Is #1 on VOD While ‘Godzilla Minus One’ Is Still Nowhere in Sight
Image
“Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” (Warner Bros.), the year’s second-biggest grossing film so far (after the same studio’s “Dune: Part Two”). The $19.99 rental was an immediate #1 on both the iTunes (transaction counting) and Fandango (revenue) VOD charts.

The release comes 46 days after its theatrical opening, a fairly standard delay if not a bit longer. Meanwhile, “Godzilla Minus One” (Toho), the sleeper Japanese success and Oscar Visual Effects winner, has now passed the five-week mark since its domestic release with no home viewing options in sight.

The timing is tied to agreements between Legendary Films (the domestic “Godzilla” licensee) and the franchise’s Japanese owner to not directly compete with each other. As the Warners film advances in its home availability ($5.99 rentals and Max streaming still to come), it remains to be seen when Toho’s film will be permitted.

At the other end of the spectrum, Netflix...

Jerry Seinfeld Loses His Netflix #1 to Brooke Shields in ‘Mother of the Bride’
Image
Jerry Seinfeld’s highly touted (and largely panned) feature directorial debut, “Unfrosted,” spent four days leading Netflix’s top 10 movie chart before another Netflix original, “Mother of the Bride” starring Brooke Shields, took the slot before the thematically appropriate weekend holiday.

“Unfrosted” led for just four days, with “Shrek” from 2001 leading midweek before the debut of “Bride.” The Dreamworks animated classic is still in second place, while Seinfeld’s Pop-Tarts comedy dropped to fourth.

“Bride” comes from director Mark Waters. Perhaps best known for his “Freaky Friday” remake and the original “Mean Girls,” Waters went on to direct “The Spiderwick Chronicles,” “Vampire Academy,” and “Bad Santa 2.” In the new rom-com, Shields is a mom who realizes the father of her future son-in-law broke her heart decades ago.

“Bride” and “Unfrosted” are the sole Netflix originals on its weekly list of the top 10 domestic movies. Reflecting the start of summer’s school vacations,...

The Last Stop in Yuma County Interview with Jocelin Donahue & Richard Brake
Image
If you were roped into a high-stakes hostage situation at a retro diner out in the desert, which character would you want to assume? The heroic waitress? The badass bank robber? The Last Stop in Yuma County centers on just that very idea, with these two characters in mind as a tense thriller plays out in real time against a throwback-Arizona backdrop. Veteran character actor Richard Brake (Game of Thrones) plays one of the robbers, and horror queen Jocelin Donahue (Insidious: Chapter 2) tackles the challenging role of the ever-so-traumatized hostess who runs the Yuma County rest stop.

We recently caught up with Brake and Donahue in separate interviews to learn more about their darkly comedic Western thriller The Last Stop in Yuma County, directed by Francis Galluppi and also starring Jim Cummings, plus a handful of other household names.

On-Air Film Review: Time to Visit ‘The Last Stop in Yuma County’
Image
Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Dan Baker on Wbgr-fm on May 9th, reviewing “The Last Stop in Yuma County,” a throwback noir and the director debut of Francis Galluppi. In select theaters and available for digital download on May 10th.

Rating: 5.0/5.0

“Last Stop …” begins with a knife salesman (Jim Cummings) stuck at a last-chance-for-a-hundred-miles gas station/diner with an empty tank, and has to cool his heels at the diner to wait for a delayed fuel truck. A second pair of men walks in (Richard Brake and Nicolas Logan) for the same reason, after having robbed a ban. They assert themselves by taking the salesman and diner owner Charlotte (Jocelin Donahue) hostage, when they become aware that Charlotte is married to the local sheriff. As more folks filter in for the same empty tank reason – and Charlotte and the knife salesman have to...
