With Gauthamante Radham (Gautham's Vehicle), I am convinced that Malayalam cinema has moved to a territory where films can be made on unique themes and still look consumable. One such theme is that of a family's obsession with their first car, the primary theme of this feel-good drama, which is also a popular theme amongst middle-class Indians. High relatability apart, what works for the film is the nostalgic effect it will have on you if you have ever bought a used car and felt flustered over the thought of selling it. Neeraj Madhav leads the film with great support from Renji Panicker, Valsala Menon, and Devi Ajith making up the reel family. Everything about this family exudes poignancy making the film easier to sit back and relish, especially during quarantine. Basil Joseph and Punya Elizabeth form the rest of the cast and they do a fine job with their roles. Although I was not too impressed with the conflict in the film (involving Elizabeth), I still have to give it to Anand Menon for carving a nice little story in his debut, that although faces difficulty in pacing in the second half, is overall an attempt that can bring a smile to your face. Or even a tear. The privilege to own a car comes with its own set of emotions. Watching Gauthamante Radham may help you relive those. TN.
