Beautiful, hopeful, inspiring

This film allows us to see the positive impact of music and community on young lives. Drumming is the heartbeat that connects identity, culture and history and gives purpose to those learning, and those teaching. We witness poignant moments of joy, sadness, celebration and humor. It opens the door for important conversations about African American representation. A wonderful film.

What struck me most about River City Drumbeat is the role that music had in relationships at so many different levels - kindling for the love between husband and wife, a bonding activity between family members, a source of pride and unity for members of a local community, a bringing-together of neighboring communities, and a bridge reestablishing the relationship between a group of people and a culture once lost to them. In addition to being a unifying factor, music also served as the delineating factor in the relationship between one drum corps alum and his childhood peers, redirecting him onto a positive life path that he might not otherwise have followed. It's a film that emphasizes the impact of music and music programs on individuals, communities, and the intersection between the two. Highly recommended.
