This sort of felt like kids tv made for adults. They have a really varied range of stand-ups, double acts, music acts, a woman dressed up some grapes, stuff that really pushes the boundaries of what qualifies as comedy. And (mostly) nobody complains about Trump or PC culture, which is a welcome relief. Really hope they do another series.
I've given this two stars because that's how many time I laughed at this. The acts come from the bottom of a barrel that someone found at the bottom of another barrel. Is Harry Hill past his sell by date. To spend anymore time reviewing this would be wasteful as watching it was.
I felt compelled to write this review having seen the other review by stuartpbottomley . Maybe if like stuart, you think the latest spider-man film is the best superhero film of all time (!!), you won't enjoy clubnite.
If, however, you enjoy something a little little bit more left-field (think vic and bob's shooting stars, James Acaster's netflix special, I don't know anything not 100% observational) then I'd bet you'll enjoy it.
I think this shows Harry Hill at his best. His entrance each week is marked by a karaoke version of various songs (so far including work by Lizzo, the Pixies, The Cure, etc) and then a short routine by Harry. He then introduces the first act, who performs for about 5-10 minutes. He has apparently picked the acts for each week himself - and it shows, there's an element of surrealism that I haven't seen elsewhere on national TV this year. One of my favourite segments is when audience members are asked to sit on a seesaw with a washing machine on the other end. If they weigh the same, the win it (but they must take it home immediately after the recording). So far, apart from episode 3 (a bit of a let down), the others have been nearly flawless. luv it
Great to see some new act given a go. Some might not be to everyone's taste, but there are some real crackers in there. Hope it gets a second series and grows. Thank you Harry Hill and Channel 4 for taking a risk.
1) they use awful canned laughter every 5 seconds, even at moments that a comedian is still setting up a joke (so there's nothing to laugh at yet).
2) They control the volume of the laughter in such a manner that doesn't seem natural to regular laughing, and it's on a much higher volume to the comedians, so you're trying to pay attention to the jokes, and get ear by the laughs.
3) Granted, I've only been able to endure watching one episode, but as a guy who watches a lot of comedy, I can easily say they don't go looking for any great comedians. Bad timing, flat jokes, over enunciation, hack gimmicks.
4) Also awful host: Not funny, annoying, narcissistic.
