A great learning experience

I live in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan which has a large population of Finish Americans. This movie appeared on our local PBS station recently. I was aware that Russia had always wanted to dominate Finland. I was not aware that they had fought a war against each other. In my opinion the movie was an excellent documentary. It described in detail the issues leading up to the war, how Russia implemented their strategy, and the response of the whole Finish nation. I have always found the Finish people to be very gentle and kind, but this movie demonstrated their ferocity when facing extraordinary pressure. I highly recommend this movie for any history buff.

Director Ben Strout had all archival material for "The Winter War" converted to HD and delivered on hard drives from Finland, Germany, and the US in 2005 before the 'war' between Blu-Ray and High-definition was decided. It was edited completely in HD. It first aired on PBS in Boston in full HD. Strout waited until that HD 'battle' was decided before releasing "Fire and Ice" on DVD in Blu-Ray format.
