Brian Cox is the David Attenborough of Space!

Epic! What a journey! We've learned so much in such a short period of time. I keep thinking back to my time in secondary school learning about the solar system and what we knew then compared to now is absolutely mind blowing! The production, music, editing and special effects really make you feel you're there. But Brian Cox is the star of the show, his delivery and narration is 10/10. If you like Planet Earth but are longing for something a little more extraterrestrial, look no further. The Planets will not disappoint.

I watched this after smoking a joint

It is truly astonishing how the information given in the episodes takes me into a deep thought that makes me wonder with my eyes open. I really don't have words to describe how much I liked it.

I am grateful to have watched this.

The Existential End of Industrial Philosophy

A spectacular show made for a world that has forgotten how to dream. The effects and music are masterfully interwoven. The narration perfectly succinct and elevated.

This show is made to leave you in awe. It all feels natural, not dramatised and out of context.

Next year should be about habitable exoplanets, binary star systems and planets caught in the firing range of supernova and neutron stars.

Fascinating

It is bold, it is ambitious, it is utterly spectacular but also, it is smart. I've heard explanations I'd never heard before about our Solar System. Frankly, I've never known (them) despite watching documentaries about space for decades. It gives you a unique perspective. Also, Brian is a 15 out of 10 presenter, engaging and as simple as a friend. All in all, it's going to be one of the best science series of the year.

Worth the licence fee on its own

Great production values , improved grahics and good narration. One of the best Space docs of the last few years. Carl Sagan is looking on warmly. Biggest Volcano in the Solar System, olympus mons, only because we have no idea what hides on Jupiter Saurn Neptune Uranus. More like this please ...But maybe its too expensive??

Brilliantly Thought Provoking

The amount of information contained in this series is astounding, giving us a chastening insight into the origin of our Planet and the Solar System. I felt fear, I felt tiny and I felt exhilaration, I felt humble and I felt great watching this series.

All these mixed feelings alternating through me as I was watching the episodes, transfixed.

Professor Cox narration is wonderful and I love the way his documentaries are presented: scientific subjects simplified and beautified by splicing natural scenes to scientific matters.

It was so majestic, I think there were a lot of moments I was actually holding my breath

It was so majestic, I think there were a lot of moments I was actually holding my breath.

The series is packed with information about the planets and the Sun. I thought I knew about our solar system, but obviously I did not. Facts are presented in the most comprehensible way possible and the visual effects make watching it quite thrilling and elevating. It's such an experience to be reminded of the vastness of being beyond ours. I've always been fascinated by space, but watching this took it to a whole new level.

The series, among other things, shows the aspirations and efforts that have gone into bringing us this kind of knowledge. You get to see people from Juno, Galileo, Cassini and New Horizon missions and many more which makes the stories much more accessible because you get to walk with them on their path of discovery when they give you snapshots of what was happening in their minds and in their teams. It was also exciting to hear about future projects such as Mars 2020 (I believe NASA based on the public vote is going to choose a name for it) and Enceladus' planned orbiters. I am, too, happy to be living in the era of "Are We Alone?" quest.

Let's not forget about the song "The Void." It's supremely beautiful.

Thank you BBC for producing this masterpiece and PBS for bringing it to us.

Update: the name is Perseverance and that is what we should all aspire to have.

Mind Boggling

Professor Brian Cox is the David Attenborough of scientific programmes. He brings a wealth of knowledge to any media he is involved in, not least The Planets, which is a masterpiece of television.

The story-telling and graphical representation is fantastic. Each episode seems to outdo its predecessor.

If astronomy is your thing, or you simply to want to learn more about our solar system, I implore you to watch this series.

Incredible space marvel

Never written a review on imdb before. But after 3 episodes in I felt like this series needs a review. its astoundingly well produced and a overall brilliantly narrated story of our universe.

This series rivals David's Attenborough's planetary series. It truly deserves incredible recognition

A visual treat but so slow

The planets of our solar system are things of wonder and it is fantastic to have a whole big budget series devoted to them. The many graphics sequences are top notch as we are shown space probes orbiting planets or skimming past moons and artists' impressions of each planet's surface or atmosphere. The other delight is Brian Cox, who's quiet enthusiasm is so engaging.

The major downside is the pace of the show. The script seems to have been pared back so we that can instead concentrate on the images, but this results in very little information being presented. I know that the show may be compared to a nature program, but in a wildlife show we are presented with genuine images of the world around us, while this show instead feeds us lots of computer animation. The occasional cut to Brian Cox exploring a part of our world tangentially related to the topic under discussion seems to add little, except to confirm that he appears to be a nice guy. Our solar system is so fascinating and it is frustrating that so little is covered each episode.

Despite my reservations I did keep returning to watch later episodes, but I would recommend keeping a finger near the fast forward button in case the slow pace of the show becomes too much for you.

Load of horse S#%T! Not a documentary.

How can this be called a documentary it's 98% speculation and tons of high resolution CGI. If you look at this from the point of view of a collaboration of completely unproven theorys put together with lots of well done CGI then that is one thing, but it should be in the science fiction category not documentary.

Space, final frontier

There are multiple documentaries about space exploration but this one is truly special... First of all there are 2 versions of this show and a 1999 prequel... UK and US versions are both equally amazing... The US version is narrated by Zachary Quinto, so it's quite something to watch a documentary in Spock's voice with all the drama he adds... The UK version is narrated by Bryan Cox who is a brilliant astrophysicist... What makes this show different is that it's not pure astrophysics but there is a glimpse of engineering that brings the beauty of all these worlds , each planet was observed by certain probes that were built over the last 60 years , it is mentioned which probe made certain discoveries... Other than that storytelling, cinematography, computer graphics all amazing, if there is a film about space you are looking for, this is the one...

Holy cr*p!

The quality of this is breath taking.

One of the best music scores, Brian Cox gently guiding you through the magic of the Solar System., what more could you need??!

No trashy stock music or third rate graphics.

This is a gem.

BBC make the best documentaries.

This series focuses on some of the more interesting and recent discoveries relating to the bodies that make up our solar system, such as Jupiter's inward orbital migration and how this affected the development of bodies such as Ceres and Mars. Brian Cox was a big fan of Carl Sagan growing up and it shows in his admirable ability to explain complicated processes in an easily digestible manner.

PERFECT

If there ever was anything which came close to being a 'Perfect' show/documentary/motion picture, this is it. The narration by Dr. Cox, the background score, the CGI, the storytelling itself, it's all just stupendously flawless. I can't thank the creators of this documentary enough.

Slow and unreal

Untested theory, fake CGI, and really slow pace. Just like you are watching an academic report but the reporter is unconvincing.

Visually Stunning. Beautifully Narrated. Intelligently Put Together.

I love documentaries about the space, universe, planets, or anything out there in our multiverse. I have watched quite many, however, this one took its position on the top due to: 1. Great and knowledgeable content on the subjects.

2. Brian Cox; wow, what a narrator!

3. Beautiful imagery and overall presentation.

4. Everything broke down into easier-to-understand parts.

BBC never disappoints me with their documentaries. And, I think Brian Cox gets on my favourite narrators list after Sir David Attenborough. It's like I have died, gone to heaven, and listening to some angel enlightening me on our solar-system.

Excellent documentary as TV-Series. Must watch and own!

My Rating: 10/10.

I want MORE!

I enjoyed this series so much I've watched it at least three times. The animation mixed actual footage is brilliant. It would be great to see a season two. Maybe "The Stars". I would love to know more about the different stars in the sky. Thank you to everyone involved in this series.
