Image
‘Fatal Seduction’ season 2 finds Nandi in a familiarly dangerous place with an entirely new hunter on her tail. Vuyo’s consistent efforts in investigating Vilakazi compel the Minister to train a target on the cop’s back. As a result, menacing danger constantly surrounds an unwitting Zinhle, aka Zee, Vuyo’s secret daughter. Thus, with her daughter’s life on the line while her own is confined within a brutal prison system, Nandi is desperate to protect herself and her family but has no power to do so. In fact, the only thing that seems to be keeping her safe in prison is her relationship with a fellow convict named Phila. As such, the latter enters the story as an intriguing character who goes on to remain an integral part of the protagonist’s tale in the future.

‘The Fix’ Review
Image
Stars: Grace Van Dien, Robyn Rossouw, Tafara Nyatsanza, Keenan Arrison, Daniel Sharman, Ryan Kruger, Clancy Brown | Written and Directed by Kelsey Egan

The Fix is the latest film from South African writer/director Kelsey Egan and in keeping with the themes of her previous features, Glasshouse and I Carry You Always, it’s set in a future where pollution has rendered the Earth toxic. Unlike those two films though, it’s not to the point where people need to stay indoors, you can go out with the aid of a filtered mask or, if you can afford it, a drug known as Air Remedy, Airem for short, manufactured by pharmaceutical giant Aethera.

As a matter of fact, The Fix opens with model Ella McPhee shooting a commercial for Airem. Despite having landed the lucrative assignment of being their spokesmodel, she’s not a happy person. She lost her mother to suicide a year ago today.

Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.

Beatles ’64 (David Tedeschi)

While Andrei Ujică’s Twst / Things We Said Today, which premiered on the fall festival circuit this year, took a more avant-garde approach to Beatlemania in the United States, the David Tedeschi-directed, Martin Scorsese-produced Beatles ’64 is a far more straightforward and therefore fan-pleasing documentary about the Fab Four. Capturing their February 7, 1964 descent upon NYC, the neatly-assembled, restored archival footage shot by Albert and David Maysles is the finest part of the documentary, while present-day talking heads memories from Paul McCartney (speaking on how their lyrics attempted to make a universal yet personal connection), Ringo Starr, and especially David Lynch provide welcome context. The Mulholland Dr. director remarked about seeing Beatles in a boxing ring, waxing poetic about...

‘The Fix’ Movie Ending Explained & Full Story: Did Ella Reach Lazarus?
Image
Crisis situations often highlight the depth of human depravity, as the dystopian flick The Fix, directed by South African director Kelsey Egan, shows through a narrative that is extremely topical in a post-pandemic world. The questions posed by the makers about the existence of ethics and morality in an increasingly profit-motivated health industry, one that seeks to benefit by preying on the insecurities of people and monopolizing life-saving products, are quite relevant when you keep in mind how similar situations had affected the world just a couple of years back. The visceral body horror elements in the movie, which act as a metaphor for the violation of bodily rights for scientific experiments done for the so called greater good, could have been showcased for a longer duration, but nevertheless, they work well in the narrative context.

The only part of the movie that somewhat lets viewers down a bit is the editing,...

Cross Examination Of Matlock Season 1: Where Have We Seen These Lawyers Before?
Image
Very few shows can make a splash like Matlock, but a splash was definitely made. There’s at least one incredible new cast every year, and we were lucky enough that this one had the legendary Kathy Bates.

She’s not alone either, as industry vet and America’s favorite grandpa, Beau Bridges, is joining her. But what about the rest of the cast and characters?

We already know all we need about Kathy Bates and Beau Bridges. Now it’s time to figure out where some of these other familiar faces in Matlock are from.

(Sonja Flemming/CBS)

There will be no leading the witness here — just straight, hard facts.

What do you say we stop jury tampering and get right to some opening statements?

The Fix Review: Breathing Life into Dystopian Cinema
Image
“The Fix” is a compelling investigation of environmental survival in the present sci-fi scene, breathing new life into dystopian scenarios. This South African indie film, released on June 23, 2024, transports audiences to a near-future world in which breathable air has become a luxury and human adaptation is no longer a choice, but a necessity.

Ella, a supermodel played by Grace Van Dien, is central to this riveting narrative. She goes from being a business ambassador to an unexpected rebel. The film effectively depicts the convergence of climatic crisis, pharmacological control, and individual agency, creating a frightening world similar to our current direction.

Director Kelsey Egan imagines a planet where toxic air radically alters human existence. People live by combining pricey pharmaceutical medications with protective masks, resulting in a bleak social landscape in which survival is inextricably related to economic status. When Ella accidently comes into contact with an experimental medicine that begins to physically modify her,...

This Ambitious Sci-Fi Body Horror Movie Is Held Back by Its Effects
Image
The following contains spoilers for The Fix. Proceed with caution.

By nature, science-fiction and horror have always been cousins of sorts. While sci-fi epics like Star Wars and horror staples like Child's Play may not be in the same league, other movies like The Colour Out of Space represent a unique marriage of styles. But the glue that binds these genres together is the subgenre of body horror. One of the best examples of this is David Cronenberg's The Fly or Shinya Tsukamoto's Tetsuo: The Iron Man. Both stories follow the unlucky fate of an individual forced to transform into something that's neither human nor animal but, instead, entirely new. It's chilling and nauseating, and Kelsey Egan's The Fix shares similar DNA while setting up an ambitious idea.

The movie is set in a world where air quality has plummeted, and people can't breathe the toxic atmosphere without a mask.

'The Fix' Review | Supermodel Gets Her Freak on in Sci-Fi Horror
Image
Dystopia is feeling more and more like home. The Fix, stars Grace Van Dien as Ella McPhee, a model with a complex past, and an even more complex genetic structure after she accidentally takes an experimental drug. The movie is a science-fiction body horror thriller that feels pretty similar to our recent history despite all its high-concept qualities.

In a future with toxic air that requires masks (get ready for 2020 flashbacks), there is a race to figure out a cure or solution to survival. Enter Ella, daughter of a supermodel who died by suicide. Ella takes what she thought was a party drug when confronted with the truths about her unfaithful, trouble-making lover, Tully (Tafara Nyatsanza), who has a clandestine relationship with Ella's best friend, Gina (Robyn Rossouw). This is where the film starts to fumble a bit just because so much emotional weight is thrust upon the character before...

‘General Hospital’ Sets New Writing Team Led By Elizabeth Korte, Chris Van Etten & Cathy LePard
Image
Following Patrick Mulcahey’s departure as co-head writer earlier this year, a new head writing team has been established at “General Hospital.” The new team’s material will appear on screen starting with the Thursday, August 8 episode.

Elizabeth Korte, named co-head writer alongside Mulcahey in January, will continue as the show’s co-head writer. This time, however, she will work alongside co-head writer Chris Van Etten and associate head writer Cathy LePard as part of a new structure by ABC.

Fans will recall that Van Etten had been the show’s head writer from October 2017 until January of this year, when the show decided to make changes at the top with the sudden ouster of Van Etten and co-head writer Dan O’Connor. Their material aired through mid-March.

In May, it was revealed that Van Etten had returned to the show as a breakdown writer following a pitch he made over...
