Reviewing and rating this movie isn't straightforward. On the one hand, it's a noble attempt at reformulating the tried and tested high concept single location sci-fi mystery (think Cube, or Circle). On the other hand, it's a jumbled mess of ideas that ultimately lead to an underwhelming and disappointint conclusion. What compelled me to write this review is the need to inject a balanced view amid the overly harsh 1* reviews, and the utterly ridiculous 10* review that I can only assume was written by someone involved with making the movie. It's not terrible - I was intrigued enough to watch the whole thing, and only started to get bored in the final stretch of the 3rd act. Equally, it's not great. But honestly, I applaud the attempt. Here's hoping the director learns from this and comes back with a stronger script for his next feature.

The concept is definetly interesting, and the main actor is incredible with it's expressions. The writting is enough to keep someone entertained, but not to satisfy.
On top of this, the set is always the same. After a bit of the movie, you realize it really is everything the movie has to offer. Some dialogue, some small setbacks, a problem and a guy stuck in a cube. Nothing more.
If you're an enthusiast of action or science fiction movies, this is definetly not for you. The initial scene is a trap that makes you think the movie is going to be loaded with war scenes, and the ending is as underwhelming and expected as it can be. You will most likely finish this movie disappointed.

Okay, so yeah, I watched the whole thing because Jonathan Rosenthal was pretty to look at. But the movie is highly derivative and highly claustrophobic. And it doesn't have enough cleverness to sustain its minimalist setting without long stretches of me shouting "get on with it!"
Once the mystery is resolved, it is a matter of thinking to yourself - "oh, yeah, that was one of the possibilities I thought of while having plenty of time to think while watching this." So it is not really a twist or even a surprise.
The filmmakers get a C for effort. And the lead actor gets a YOWZA for his presence. That averages to a middle of the road movie.

I watched this movie because I like escape room style of movies where you can solve riddles and root for the people entrapped. But with this main character, it was really hard to feel any empathy or root for him because the character is highly dumb, loud and pathetic. I disluked him so much, I was looking forward to him getting more hurt or dying. Whoever wrote this charecter and his ridiculous lines should het another job. Also, this movie brings nothing new to the game besides being dumb, it taked the Idea of cube and puts it into a war scenario, thats all. Save your time and do something more fun like watching paint dry.

This is a very bad mixture between "Cube" and "Buried". I don´t understand why nobody watched this film; only 75 votes, only one critic (now two with mine), and the critic of 10... It is a production of 2022... I don´t Know, but It looks very strange.
Copy of Rodrigo Cortese´s "Buried", with a bigger set like in "Cube", with very poor acting and a screenplay that could be better, but the directing and the acting are so bad that you just want to stop the picture at the very beginnig, somethig like in the first 20 minutes.
I am not gonna tell You anything about the picture, no spoiling; but I warned you! It is a waste of time. And I am sure that it started with the votes of the production friends and families, but now, with ordinary people like us, with nothing to do with the picture, It will go to 4 stars, with a very few days. Yesterday it was 8.1; today with 20 votes more, 7.4... wait two weeks or four, and you will see...
This type of strange products, coming from years away and nobody watching it... I don´t now... be very careful of those movies with such a poor votes and a big rating. Just wait a month before watching it. Then return to see the rating and you wil discover that It is under 5.
1 star out of 10.

I dont know how the movie came out in 2022. But just now getting released just now to the public. It really should have been abandoned from writing or reading the script or before production , casting , filming. We atleast know that the movie theaters did abandon this from ever being on there big screens. As most should read most of the these reviews and abandoned all hope of watching this and think something will happen or it will get better as the movie begins. That alone was hard enough to make it out of the first few minutes of the movie. I thought it was a comedy at first just going with the bad acting wild lines and just the overall look and feel of the beginning. Maybe it was cause it was a joke and in the end. I just laughed at myself for watching the whole entire movie without turning it off or shall we say Abandoned it.

Having read a few reviews I decided to jump into the Abandon expecting a little more than I discovered.
The film follows a soldier called Miles who while at war in Iraq encounters a bright light and awakens in a a strange cube structure.
That one paragraph has saved you watching the first ten minutes, but the rest of the film felt as limited as its own restricted setting.
Theres sadly very little meaning or thought with most of the film feeling like a convoluted filler to try and keep the audience thinking long enough to sit through the entire film.
Unfortunately you never quite know what's going on, and just as things start to make any sort of sense, you're hitting the last 15 minutes.
I'm a big fan of sci-fi and films that make you think, but the Abandon sadly feels very forced, if you only caught the first 5 minutes and the last 15 minites, you'd know just as much as someone who'd watched the film 3 times which leaves it feeling a little dissapointing.
It's a shame that the last 20 secodns was probably the most interesting part of the whole film, which could potentially point towards a sequel heading in a slightly different direction which could make for a great adventure, but if the rest of the film is anything to go by, it's more e than likely just one scene which actually clicked well and got me thinking, unlike the rest the other hour and a half.

I normally like psychological dramas and weird movies like The Platform, Cube and escape room challenges. This one however, is all about a guy in a box, where the law of physics don't apply. Eventually he's able to talk to a woman, obviously trapped in a box too. Then, absolutely nothing happens until the film is almost over. You can literally save yourself time and fast forward to the end. You won't get any answers but at least you saved your precious time.
The are much better guy-trapped-on-a-box themed movies like the Cube and the Saw franchises. I also liked House if 9, which of course includes more than on trapped guy, This one is too cheap and simple.

I'm a huge fan of single location movies like Buried or Last Call. However the dialogue in the first 30 minutes of the movie doesn't make any sense. Only after the main character gains a bit of trust with the other party does it start to make sense, and the character development starts, but by then, I had lost a lot of the interest.
It did pick up well enough for me to finish watching the whole movie. Even if it doesn't bring a lot of new things to the table, it's still a decent enough movie that keeps you guessing what the hell is going on (even though that's never the real point of these movies). Don't expect it to be explained to you -- the ending will keep you guessing, and that's fine.
The sci-fi bits and the very few effects of the movie are quite good, but the attempt to mathematically explain what's going is absolutely nonsensical.
The movie feels like they threw Cube, Buried and Last Call into a mixer, but didn't add any other ingredients and forgot to blend or shake it. Still an entertaining watch if you're a fan of the genre.

American soldier Miles Willis (Jonathan Rosenthal) is fighting in the Middle East. He is shot. A bright light shines down and he finds himself in a cube room with no exit.
This is drawing heavily from Cube, but it doesn't have the fun of a good mystery. It feels known and random. The variable gravity is interesting for awhile, but Miles annoyed me for not wearing his helmet. It's the first thing that I would do. I would also try to grab all the stuff before they come flying at my head. This doesn't have the mystery solving fun and the final reveal falls a bit flat. It's no sin to copy Cube, but this doesn't do much with it.

The impressive difference in reviewers' ratings is explained by this film itself: there are people who love to solve riddles and there are people (the majority, let's face it) who are wildly irritated by these same riddles because they don't want to bother to solve them.
So if you're wondering whether to watch this or not, keep in mind: 1) it's not an action movie, it's an intellectual sci-fi mystery with elements of emotional drama, 2) it's like a one-man show, but at the same time not, 3) it's not a direct sequel to Cube, although it can be connected, 4) there will be no direct final answer, but that's the fun.
So if you like to solve the puzzles with no ready-made answers, then you can give it a try.

Immediately, as with many others, I thought of the great Canadian B-Movie, Cube. If you enjoyed Cube, watch The Platform, it's great. The Abandon was good, watchable, but the dialogue was insane. If I was imprisoned and unable to talk to anyone then I get a phone call, what would the very first thing I'd say? "Hello? Who's This? Who are you? Where are you located? I'm imprisoned. My name is______. I'm from _______. My last known location was ______ on this date. I was there because _______. Get me some help. Help me get out of here. Get a message to ______ for me." This is normal dialogue between two strangers on a phone. I guess they wanted to cram a log of dialogue into one little movie and didn't have enough room so a lot of it was cut out, but at least make the dialogue realistic; some of the things these characters say, nobody would ever say this stuff. Far too many times I found my self asking, "Who wrote this dialogue, it needs work." Other than that, I enjoyed it.

No pun intended - this reminds me, that I have to rewatch the ... I'll call it classic movie (this has taken a few notes from) ... called the Cube! I wouldn't say that it is a copy (or uses the same blueprint ... see what I did there?) ... but you can see and feel that it tries to create a similar mood.
Having said that it does try to do things differently - you get a different story and some interesting twists. I assume you can see many things coming before they happen. But still it is suspenseful enough to work its "magic" - well again no pun intended. You may lose track of time too - which might or might not be a pun ... special effects are good. It's a shame it can't keep it up (not an innuendo, but certainly a pun - no matter which side you turn it to ... sorry had to) ... hopefully you are not claustrophobic ... this might be the end of you.

I don't know why people reviewing this movie are comparing it to cube. Cube is a horror movie while the abandon is a thriller, psychological Sci fi. I see a lot of impatient people making unnecessary comments about how slow this movie was but that's the whole point, it's not an action movie, it's mostly psychological. I feel like a lot of people didn't understand what this movie was supposed to be. All the people making negative reviews regarding this movie are used to fast paced, action packed movies but this one is designed to be slow but intriguing, to get you to think and wait for a solution.

Director Jason Satterlund's "The Abandon" is really something.
The lead, Jonathan Rosenthal, carries the film solo for most of it, stuck in this ever-changing room. It's intense, but he nails it. There's also Tamara Perry, who's just an off-camera voice most of the time, but her performance is soooo powerful.
It's impressive what Satterlund accomplished with such a tiny onscreen team. It totally works. The claustrophobic set, great acting, and creepy sound design all come together nicely. If you're into thought-provoking thrillers, definitely check it out. It shows you can make a solid film without big bucks if you've got the right talent and ideas. Let me know what you think if you watch it!

The Abandon is an intense and thought-provoking thriller that grips you from the very first scene. The film follows a wounded soldier trapped in a mysterious, high-stakes environment that tests his physical strength and mental resilience. Jonathan Rosenthal delivers a powerful and emotionally charged performance, capturing the fragility and determination of his character. The direction by Jason Satterlund is masterful, blending claustrophobic visuals with a taut, suspenseful narrative. With its unexpected twists and profound themes, the movie is a compelling exploration of survival and self-discovery that lingers long after the credits roll.
