Sequels, whether true (with the story continuing) or ‘in spirit’ haven’t always matched the originals in Hindi films. A welcome exception is when the second film betters the previous one, as happens in rare cases like Tanu Weds Manu or Drishyam. Most filmmakers go wrong by making the next film merely bigger but not better. That was exactly the case with Tum Bin, Rock On!!, Dedh Ishqiya or Welcome Back.

Eighteen years of Bheja Fry, how do you look back on this cult success?

This is a film that gave a kickstart to many of our careers. This was also the kind of the beginning of what came to be known as multiplex films and was a new kind of audience.

What was the process of shooting like? What was your camaraderie like with your co-stars Vinay Pathak and Ranvir Shorey?

The shoot was amazing. Being a very low-budget kind of film, we finished shooting the entire film in 20 days. It was twenty hectic days of great joy. The camaraderie on the set was incredible. Vinay , Ranvir, and I were already friends. We had done a play,...

The Varun Dhawan-Anushka Sharma starrer Sui Dhaaga released two years ago on this day. Director Sharat Katariya, opening up on his creative process, says the characters in his films come from his personal experiences.

The 2018 release "Sui Dhaaga" was Katariya's third directorial after "10ml Love" (2010) and "Dum Laga Ke Haisha" (2015). He also contributed as a writer in films like "Bheja Fry" (2007) and "Titli" (2015).

Katariya, who also penned dialogues in "Fan" (2016) and "Befikre" (2016), has carved his niche for crafting critically acclaimed commercial entertainers that celebrate realism, as a writer and filmmaker.

"I was born in Delhi. The characters normally come from personal experiences of growing up. All these characters whether its Prem and Sandhya (Dum Laga Ke Haisha) or Mauji and Mamta (Sui Dhaaga) or other characters, like their parents, their family, their neighbours, whatsoever you write or you are influenced from, are people who you come across," Katariya said.

Dum Laga Ke Haisha is the latest offering from Yash Raj Films starring Ayushmann Khurrana (Vicky Donor) and debutante Bhumi Pednekar. It also marks Sharat Katariya (of Bheja Fry fame) changing gears from writer to director.

It film features music by Anu Malik (Main Hoon Na), composing after almost two years, his last being Shootout at Wadala. Mumbai, March 9: Bollywood potboilers "Wanted" and "Dabangg" minted over Rs.100 crore at the box-office. But from acclaimed actor-filmmaker Rajat Kapoor's perspective, they impacted the growth of his "kind of cinema", which includes offbeat entertainers like "Bheja Fry" and "Mithya".

In the past decade, he has directed just five films - "Raghu Romeo", "Mixed Doubles", "Mithya", "Fatso!" and the forthcoming "Ankhon Dekhi". He has no regrets.

"It is very difficult to get producers, but I'm happy about the fact that I made five films in the last 10 years. After 'Mithya' (2008), I thought it will become easy, but suddenly all the masala films like 'Wanted' and 'Dabangg' came in and my kind of cinema was pushed back a little.

New Delhi, Feb 1: He'll be remembered for his accurate comic timing and effortless humour in films like "Bheja Fry" and "Khosla Ka Ghosla", but Ranvir Shorey does not think he has managed to make much of a mark in the Hindi film industry. Anyway, he has no grudges and says that sometimes things don't work out as expected.

"I don't think I have really made a dent in the film industry as I would have liked to. There are many reasons for that. Bollywood is not an even playing field. Under the circumstances, you do the best you can," Ranvir told Ians on the phone from Mumbai.

But the 41-year-old has managed to come to.

Principal photography has started on Island City, written and directed by Indian filmmaker Ruchika Oberoi, which participated in Nfdc Screenwriters’ Lab in 2012.

Nfdc is fully financing the Hindi-language project, which stars Vinay Pathak (Bheja Fry), Tannishtha Chatterjee (Brick Lane) and Amruta Subhash (Masala).

Scheduled for completion in mid-2014, the film ties together three absurd stories in a modern-day Indian city.

The first story revolves around a diligent office worker who wins the office ‘Fun Committee’ award. The second is about the domineering head of a family who suddenly falls into a coma and how his family slowly replaces him in their psyche with the seductive hero of a popular soap opera. The third is about a girl who falls in love with a man who writes her love letters.

“The first two stories are black comedies while the third one falls into the tragicomedy genre,” said Oberoi.

Mumbai, Nov 4: Overwhelmed with the response to "Krrish 3", Bollywood heartthrob Hrithik Roshan wants to watch the superhero sci-fi saga with his fans.

Mumbai, July 18: Actor Vinay Pathak, who so far has impressed the audience with his superb comic timing, will make a serious appearance in the upcoming comedy "Bajatey Raho".

"I am not playing a comic character in the film. It's a very serious role. I have the most serious character in the film," Vinay said here in an interview.

So far, the VJ-turned-actor has tickled the viewers' funny bone with his roles in "Khosla Ka Ghosla", "Bheja Fry" and "Chalo Dilli", among others.

Mumbai, July 12: Bollywood actor Vinay Pathak, known for his excellent comic timing, will be seen in Ananth Mahadevan directed biopic "Gaur Hari Dastaan".

The film is about Odisha's freedom fighter Gaur Hari Das, who joined the movement to end British rule in India.

"I am playing Gaur Hari. It is a biopic. It is the story of a freedom fighter. It is a wonderful role and is fantastically directed. I am looking forward to it," said Vinay known for his rib-tickling performances in "Khosla Ka Ghosla" and "Bheja Fry".

Sagar Ballary, best remembered for his film Bheja Fry, suffered a massive personal setback with the demise of his father C B Ballary who was 73 years old, yesterday. Ballary Sr. who has been suffering from Parkinson's disease for some time now was bedridden for a month.

Mumbai, Nov 22: Sagar Ballary of "Bheja Fry" fame is scripting yet another comedy film, which is to go on floors next year. The director says comedy is his forte and he won't give it up for anything.

"Comedy is my forte and I am scripting my next comedy film. Comedy has given me everything in this industry, so I can't give up on that. All I can say is it's not a sequel to any of my previous films. It will be a fresh film," Ballary told Ians.

"I will finish scripting by December and will make an official announcement by Jan 2013," he added.

In Open Forum on October 14, a panel comprising Ketan Mehta, Sanjeev Lamba and Sanjay Suri will talk about innovative co-production methods including crowd-funding which can minimize the risks of a single producer in a project. Coming from a comic guru like Sagar Ballary, who has given comedies like 'Bheja Fry' and 'Bheja Fry 2', 'Hum Tum Shabana' is a total let down. Unlike his previous films, this has various scenes from different comedy films strung together to look like a comic masterpiece.

New Delhi, Sep 19: The team of "Hum Tum Shabana" is off to visit the shrine of Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti in Ajmer to seek blessings of the Sufi saint in the runup to the film's release.

"Leaving for Ajmer Sharif with 'Hum Tum Shabana' unit... Tusshar (Kapoor) will join from Khimsar, Minissha from Delhi, we all leaving with producers and Rafi (Kazi)," actor Satish Kaushik posted on Twitter.

The comedy, set for release Sep 30, is directed by Sagar Ballary of "Bheja Fry" fame. Produced by Sunil Chainani, Sameer Chand and Subhash Dawar, it also features Shreyas Talpade, and marks the acting debut of model and ex-vj.

New Delhi, Sep 8: Actor Rajat Kapoor is set to host the 58th National Film Awards ceremony to be held here Sep 9.

'In Delhi - hosting the national awards ceremony tomorrow (Friday),' Rajat, who is known for films like 'Corporate' and 'Bheja Fry', wrote on microblogging site Twitter.

Last year, the ceremony was hosted by Javed Jaffery and Divya Dutta.

Sachin-Jigar of F.A.L.T.U and Tere Sang fame are back on the front lines of Bollywood music with Hum Tum Shabana, a comedy starring Shreyas Tadpade (Golmaal Returns), Tushaar Kapoor (the Golmaal movies) and Minisha Lamba (Yahan and Bachna Ae Haseeno).

The album is made up of seven tracks, inclusive of two remixes. It features the lyrical styling’s of Sameer and the vocal talents of Anoushka Manchanda (‘Mit Jaaye Gham’ – Dum Maaro Dum), Mika Singh (‘Pyaar Do’ – Thank You), Palaash Sen (of Euphoria), Tochi Raina (‘Gal Mithi Mithi Bol’ – Aisha), Suzanne D’Mello (‘Jee Karda’ – Singh is King), Jigar Sariya (‘Rab Milaya’ – Teree Sang) along with Raghav who is making his foray into Bollywood music.

Hum Tum Shabana costars Sharad Saxena (BodyGuard) and Statish Kaushik (Road, Movie) and has been directed by Sagar Ballary (Bheja Fry). It hits cinemas on 23 September 2011.

The album starts off with a bang with Music Bandh Na Karo.
