Aamir Khan is making waves in the Indian film distribution landscape with an unprecedented move that sidesteps traditional streaming platforms entirely. The Bollywood superstar has revealed that his latest theatrical hit “Sitaare Zameen Par” will be released exclusively on YouTube Movies-on-Demand starting Aug. 1, marking a new approach to post-theatrical distribution.
The film, which has surpassed $30 million worldwide at the box office, will be available for rent at INR100 ($1.15) in India and in 38 international markets including the U.S., Canada, U.K., Australia, Germany, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore and Spain, with localized pricing for each territory.
“Roughly 15 years ago, I realized that our most successful films, like ‘3 Idiots’ or ‘Dangal,’ the statistic of people watching in theaters is about 2-3% of the population,” Khan tells Variety. “So the next thought that came to me is, how do we reach out to the remaining 97-98%?”

The coming-of-age story is a constant in global cinema, a narrative form revisited by every generation and culture. In a quiet corner of 1997 Ontario, writer-director Nicola Rose’s Magnetosphere finds a new key in which to play this familiar tune.
We meet thirteen-year-old Maggie at a moment of deep upheaval; her family has moved, thrusting her into the terrifying landscape of a new school. She faces the standard anxieties of adolescence—the desperate need for friendship, the sting of insecurity.
Yet Maggie’s world is uniquely her own. She lives with synesthesia, a condition that creates a private orchestra of color and sound only she can perceive. Emotions have hues and noises create visual patterns. Fearing this makes her irreparably “weird,” she keeps her sensory reality a secret, navigating the already treacherous waters of youth while guarding a profound part of her identity.

Subhash K Jha turns the spotlight on Rituparno Ghosh’s KhelaAntar Mahal. Or he could be a filmmaker, like Prosenjit in Khela. Bearded, brooding, intense and idealistic Prosenjit wants to make a film about little Buddha.
And he wants only little Akashneel for the role.
Akashneel, a delightfully shrewd calculating and clever observer of adult quirks, suggests the director ‘keednap’ him when his parents refuse permission to shoot.
There begins a charming endearing journey into a world of creativity and manipulation.
The little boy’s tantrums brought to a close with never-ending bars of chocolate by the ever-patient dress designer (Raima Sen) will ring a bell in all those filmmakers who have shot with kids from Raj Kapoor in Boot Polish to Shekhar Kapoor in Masoom to Aamir Khan and Amole Gupte in Taare Zameen Par.

Aamir Khan is currently basking in the success of his latest release, Sitaare Zameen Par. The spiritual sequel to his film, Taare Zameen Par (2007), arrived at the cinemas on June 20, 2025. It opened to single digits on the first day, but after a positive word of mouth, the film picked up, and it’s doing exceptionally well even in the third week. So far, Sitaare Zameen Par has collected over Rs 200 crore worldwide.
However, it hasn’t been a smooth road for Aamir Khan so far. This is his first big hit after a gap of 9 years. His last successful movie was Dangal, which was released in 2016. After Dangal, Aamir Khan’s Thugs of Hindostan (2018) and his ambitious project, Laal Singh Chaddha (2022) tanked at the box office. While Aamir accepts that Thugs of Hindostan was destined to fail, he is dejected after Laal Singh’s flop show,...

Aamir Khan gave a blockbuster in his directorial debut, Taare Zameen Par, in 2008. The ace actor hit the bull’s eye in his first attempt itself, and the movie went on to win the Best Film award at the 53rd Filmfare Awards. But was Aamir the real director of the film?
Amole Gupte, the film’s creative director and original story writer, disputes this. He had a fallout with Aamir after the actor took the movie from him and allegedly claimed it as his creative work.
How Did Aamir Khan End Up Replacing Akshaye Khanna?

India has selected Laapataa Ladies (Lost Ladies) as its candidate for the Best International Feature Film category at the 97th Academy Awards.
Directed by Kiran Rao and produced by Jio Studios, the Hindi film is described as a lighthearted satire on patriarchy.
It follows two brides, whose identities are hidden by an elaborate bridal head covering, who get mixed up on the eve of their wedding days, setting them on the paths of very different destinies from those they had envisaged.
A committee overseen by the Film Federation of India selected the title from 29 contenders which also included Bollywood hit Animal, Malayalam National Award winner Aattam and Cannes title All We Imagine As Light.
The latter film, directed by Payal Kapadia, had been cited in international circles as a hot contender to represent India this year, thanks to its Cannes credentials.

Indian actor Vipin Sharma is earning global acclaim for playing a trans character in Dev Patel’s feature directorial debut “Monkey Man.”
Sharma plays Alpha, the leader of a trans community known in India as hijras, who is instrumental in providing a new lease on life to Patel’s character when he’s down and out in “Monkey Man.”
Aamir Khan’s “Taare Zameen Par” (2007) was Sharma’s breakthrough role, and since then he has won plaudits for “Paan Singh Tomar,” “Gangs of Wasseypur” and “Shahid” (all 2012), “Raanjhanaa” (2013), “Raman Raghav 2.0” (2016), “Paatal Lok” (2020) and “Dear Jassi” (2023).
When director Anthony Maras offered Sharma a role in “Hotel Mumbai” (2018), starring Patel, the actor accepted. “He said, ‘It’s not a very big part, but it’s a very interesting part.’ I immediately took it because it was going to make me meet Dev who I really wanted to meet,” Sharma tells Variety.

New Delhi, Nov 11 (Ians) Tisca Chopra says the tendency to stereotype in Bollywood is not easy to duck, and going against the wave is a challenge.
"Ducking stereotypes is not easy, particularly in Bollywood, which is famous for stereotyping actors. In case you portray a role well, you'll be offered the same role further. The same character will be offered to you with a different name in film after film," Tisca told Ians.
"It hasn't been easy to duck the stereotypes, I've had to stay without work to not repeat the characters. It has required me to have fortitude and patience but I've been fortunate that sooner or later something interesting has come to me. Secret Superstar
Starring Zaira Wasim, Aamir Khan
Directed by Advait Chandan
It is easy and comforting to get swayed by the rags-to-riches fable constructed with such contemporary diligence and zeal by first-time director Advait Chandan. But once you get to penetrate the bubble of bonhomie and get into thick of things, so to speak, you come face-to-face with an unnerving sterility.
Secret Superstar is one of those well-meaning films that keeps reminding you constantly of how well-meaning it is. Many times as I watched Advait Chandan’s panoply of tricks and treats I felt I was being offered a Christmas deal with ‘Santa’ Aamir Khan mentoring the film’s 15-year old wanna-shine Zaira Wasim whose brilliance as an actor is far more dazzling than anything that is written into this film to support her dreams.
Everyone, we are told in many different ways in this stretched-out ode to wish-fulfilment, has the right to dream.

Advait Chandan is all set to make his debut as a director with Secret Superstar, featuring Zaira Wasim, MeherVij and Aamir Khan.
Interestingly, before he sat in the director’s chair, Chandan Was Aamir Khan’s manager. Recalling the moment when he met Aamir for the first time he said, “I remember his first message, his first instruction and also the moment when I was introduced to him. I distinctly remember his first instruction during the shooting of Taare Zameen Par when he called me by my name and requested to arrange ice cream for the whole unit. My next call was to my mother.”
Apprehensive about reaching out to Aamir for the narration of Secret Superstar, he narrated the idea first to producer and screenwriter Kiran Rao. It was during an outdoor shoot for the film Pk when Kiran heard the story and gave Advait the go ahead to write the screenplay.

He’s well known for playing some serious characters, like Mahavir Phogat in the critically-acclaimed Dangal, and some seriously loveable ones, like Nikumbh Sir in Taare Zameen Par – but for Secret Superstar, it seems Aamir Khan has gone bad in a most interesting way.
Directed by Adavit Chandan and starring Zaira Wasim, who also appeared alongside Khan as his second daughter, Geeta Phogat in Dangal, Secret Superstar is set to be one of Khan’s more unusual roles.

“Dangal” is Disney India’s big Christmas bet, and the Aamir Khan wrestling drama starts strong. The characters are sketched with the kind of patience that can only come from a place of confidence. There are enough crowd-pleasing moments to fill an entire summer blockbuster. The soundtrack is brash and exhilarating; the songs here will dominate many workout playlists in the new year. The social commentary is not subtle, but it is forthright and consistent.
What a shame about that second half. It is rare that a film manages to undo so much of its groundwork so thoroughly in so short a span of time. The creative decisions made here amount to self-sabotage.

Call Aamir Khan a perfectionist, and he’ll lightheartedly brush off the label, preferring to describe himself as simply “passionate” instead. Terminology aside, a mere glance at his 28-year career is ample proof that for Khan, going the extra mile is practically the equivalent of slacking off—the 51-year-old actor, producer, and director usually travels another 10 for good measure.
He did it in 1998’s “Ghulam,” when he turned down a body double or special effects in favor of sprinting towards an oncoming train for a stunt, avoiding it by a mere second and gambling his life for the sake of realism.
In 1999, when a script about 19th century villagers protesting British land tax with a game of cricket was dismissed by every financier in Bollywood, Khan took on his first producing role alongside his acting credit to make the film. Following his vintage feature Bombay Velvet, Gangs of Wasseypur director Anurag Kashyap is taking a darker turn. His new film — which he wrote, produced and directed — Raman Raghav 2.0 follows notorious serial killer Raman Raghav. Over the 1960’s in Mumbai, Raghav committed various crimes including murder and assault.
With the lead killer portrayed by Nawazuddin Siddiqui (Manjhi – The Mountain Man), the film focuses on his new obsession, a cop (played by Vicky Kaushal) as Raghav watches and creates situations where both characters go head to head. Ahead of a Cannes premiere in Directors’ Fortnight, the first trailer has landed below for the film also featuring Vipin Sharma (Taare Zameen Par), Amruta Subhash (Killa) and winner of Miss India Earth 2013 Sobhita Dhulipala.
Raman Raghav 2.0 is set to premiere at the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight.

Tisca Chopra seems to quite a favourite when it comes to starring in home productions of our Bolly stars be it Aamir Khan’s Taare Zameen Par, or Sunny Deol’s forthcoming Ghayal Once Again. But what’s even more interesting is the fact that both these films have been directed by them too.
Talking about this co-incidence, Tisca says that it’s exciting to be a part of these films and with them directing it’s all the more interesting for sure. She adds, “Being actors, they do tend to bring in a new approach so it’s nice to be working with them as co-actors and also in a different capacity with being directed by them.”
