The perfect example of good idea, but awful and i mean AWFUL execution.

First of all, i would review the PS1 and GBA version: All I know is that these two version doesnt have genes, compared to PC. But hey, as long as the gameplay is good, it's saved ... right?

It's basically like The Sims but on an older console. You have to feed the creatures, make them play, etc. Although the concept is very interesting, being that Norn's babies adopt the personality, habits and part of the appearance of their parents, which is very innovative by the way, this is the only thing that saves it. First of all, the story is quite regrettable, it leaves a lot to be desired! They show you some kind of god who is supposedly part of the Shee, and you have to take care of the Norn. But they never mention race again in this game ... What happened?

Later, the gameplay becomes very frustrating, since the framerate in the sprites is the most horrible I've seen, the graphics look like those of a SNES game! Although the artstyle is more or less good, considering that it has worst graphics that a SNES game and the PS2 was already release, this is unacceptable!

The characters are very slow, and also they do not always obey you, it becomes very tedious to move them long distances.

If all the breeding pairs die, you lose and have to start over, but why does the game let you continue loading the game?

Now, I'll give you several tips so you don't get frustrated playing this game (because I've been searching the internet for literally hours and not a single tutorial appears! Don't worry! I'll help you! I know how you feel!): -First dedicate yourself to teaching them the basics, as the fairy tells you, punish them and congratulate them when due.

-Take out the brown animals with a drill pick and place them on the platforms above. In case they are attacking a Norn, quickly drag them away. After a long time they magically return, so be careful to repeat the process.

-Give them the white plants when one of them is sick (at least in GBA, the bar appears in red). If it says that it is exhausted, give it the light blue or the blue one, I don't quite remember, the game never tells you what each plant does, but the red ones are bad.

-When the game warns you that the Norn laid an egg, drag it to the incubator. It's at the bottom left of the stage.

-When they are sleepy, try to take them home. In the event that they cannot get there (which is very common because of how slow they are), check their life bar to see that the Norn is not sick. If it is, give it the white plant when it wakes up. If you run out of plants, make sure its other needs are high so it can survive longer until it grows back.

-Be careful with punishing your creatures, because if you do it repeatedly he wil die.

-If a Norn refuses your orders or kicks food or toy, and you dont want to waste time with the punishements, simply try again MULTIPLE times.

From what I could see also on the internet there are people who insult a certain Antinorn for torturing his Norns and even threaten them with death! Is just a video game! No matter how good an AI can be.

Anyway, Creatures on PS1 and GBA is awful, one of the worst games i have ever played in both systems.

They don't explain anything to you after a while and leave you adrift. I know there are two more worlds to unlock, but I don't know how and I'm not entirely interested. Even if there weren't all the flaws I mentioned, the gameplay is too monotonous. A shame, honestly, because the main idea was great, but the game is just boring, and frustrating as hell.

Something that i have to praise is that in the PS1 version there´s beautiful music to listen to it, while in the GBA there´s nothing, but pure sound effects that can be annoying. But even with this and some quality of life resolution and a interesting cutscene, i would said the GBA version is better since the it gives you more tips, has less glitches (PS1 version has some glitches while saving the game or scroll the screen), and a much better intro explaining the story and who are the Shee. Even then, both are horrible, but stick with GBA if you want to play the game, is the most tolerable to play.

Now the PC version.... i hoped that this would be better, but is somehow worse than the other two!!! No intro, no tutorials (except for the manual), inexistent scrolling for the screen and poor hit detection for the cursor! Having more depth actually make it much worse.

Scores: GBA: 4/10 (at least is playable and tolerable for half hour... more or less) PS1: 3/10 (like GBA but somehow more incomplete and buggier, this version could easily be in SNES!) PC: 2/10 (without tutorial and other unique flaws, even if the others arent as complex, this is just bad) Overall: the series is overrated.
