Evelyn, Edward's ex-wife and Ricky's mother, shows up and wants to take Ricky back to live with her in London. Leonard tells Edward he could fight for custody, but warns him that a legal battle could get to Ricky.

As Edward and Ricky are getting ready to watch "King Kong," Ricky plays a practical joke on his dad by hiding a whoopee cushion under one of the cushions on the couch. Threatening revenge, Edward exits to the den.

Just then the doorbell rings. Ricky answers it and is surprised to see his mom Evelyn, who came in response to Ricky's letter. She asks Ricky how Edward found him, but Ricky says he was the one who found his dad. As they are talking, Edward bursts in wearing a gorilla suit. Ricky tries to cover for Edward by asking the gorilla if it can get his dad, and the gorilla nods and runs back into the den.

In the den, Edward tells Kate that he's worried that now that Evelyn is back, she'll try to take Ricky with her. He convinces Kate to dress up in the gorilla suit, as Evelyn had assumed that it was Edward she saw in the suit and he doesn't want Evelyn thinking he's a flake.

Edward comes out, dressed in a velvet robe and holding a pipe. Kate follows, wearing the suit. Edward tells Kate that the kids will love the suit at the orphanage. Kate walks over to grab her things and leaves. Ricky heads upstairs, leaving Edward and Evelyn to have a private chat.

Alone in the living room, Evelyn accuses Edward of stealing Ricky. Edward retorts with Evelyn having Ricky and never saying anything for 12 years. They both relent and admit that they were in love once upon a time. Edward says that all he ever wanted was to enjoy life, and is especially enjoying it now that Ricky is living with him. Evelyn says that's too bad, as she's taking him back to live with her in England, saying Edward is a bad influence on the boy. Edward doesn't back down, saying he has just as much of a right to Ricky as Evelyn does. Evelyn threatens to get a court order to get Ricky to stay with her if that's what it takes. Edward says he'll do the same if she does.

Edward asks Leonard what chances he has of getting custody of Ricky. Leonard enacts a scenario where he grills Edward as Evelyn's lawyer. Edward tells Leonard to do the same thing to Evelyn. Leonard says that no matter who wins, Ricky will be the loser. Edward confides in Leonard that he loves Ricky, his life now has purpose and meaning with his son present, and he doesn't know what he'll do without him. Leonard pats Edward on the back and leaves.

As Edward wrestles with his feelings, Ricky comes downstairs, saying he's not sleepy. Ricky asks what's wrong, and Edward tells Ricky that his mom wants him to live with her. Ricky says he doesn't want to leave. Edward says that he really wants Ricky to stay too, but he can't, as Evelyn is getting a court order to force him to live with her. Ricky asks his dad if he can't fight the court order. Edward says he can, but the result will be an ugly and bitter custody battle, with Ricky caught in the middle. Ricky says he doesn't want that. Edward says he doesn't want it either, which is why he'd rather just let Evelyn have him. This upsets Ricky, though Edward tries to comfort him by saying he'll always be his dad and will always be there if he needs him.

Evelyn returns, saying she didn't get the court order as she'd prefer to work out an amicable agreement for Ricky's sake. Edward tells Evelyn that he and Ricky decided to have him live with her, but doesn't want Evelyn ever putting him in a boarding school again. Evelyn agrees, and Edward heads upstairs to pack Ricky's things.

Evelyn talks to Ricky, trying to convince him that he'll love London. Still distraught about having to leave, Ricky tells her he wants to stay. Evelyn tries to tell him that it's decided, but Ricky says he and his dad need each other..

Edward comes down, and he and Ricky say a tearful goodbye. As they embrace, Evelyn tells them that she has decided to let Ricky stay with Edward after all. She tells Ricky she still wants to see him, as he's still her son. Ricky gets Edward to allow Evelyn to visit when she wants, but they both balk when he suggests that she stay the night. Evelyn tells Edward and Ricky to take care of each other. Edward thanks Evelyn for her decision. Evelyn leaves, and Ricky runs into his dad's arms.
