In Paris, a young American who works as a Michael Jackson look-alike meets Marilyn Monroe, who invites him to her commune in Scotland, where she lives with Charlie Chaplin and her daughter, Shirley Temple.

A young immigrant in Paris makes a living as a Michael Jackson impersonator, dancing in public parks, on street corners, and at trade shows. His grasp of French is limited, and despite his performances, he feels isolated and disconnected from those around him. During a gig at a nursing home, he meets a Marilyn Monroe look-alike-ethereal and magnetic. Drawn to her, he follows her invitation to a secluded commune in the Scottish Highlands, where she lives alongside other celebrity impersonators, including her husband, a domineering Charlie Chaplin, and their daughter, who embodies Shirley Temple. The community also includes the Pope, Elizabeth II, Madonna, James Dean, and others, all committed to their roles as they construct a world where they can live in harmony, separate from reality.

At first, life in the commune seems peaceful, almost magical. The impersonators interact solely as their chosen personas, sharing meals and rehearsing for an elaborate stage performance they hope will draw crowds from afar. However, cracks begin to show. Their livestock falls ill and must be culled, devastating the group. The turnout for their grand performance is dismal. Meanwhile, Charlie Chaplin's jealousy toward Michael festers, and his treatment of Marilyn becomes increasingly cruel.

One day, while wandering in the woods, the group discovers Marilyn's body-she has taken her own life. The dream of the commune collapses. Michael, disillusioned, leaves and returns to his Parisian apartment, speaking softly to a row of eggs he has drawn faces on, a desperate attempt to hold onto something, anything. Marilyn's voice lingers in his mind, urging him to forge his own path. Eventually, he steps outside without makeup, without costume-simply himself-drifting through the streets as the city comes alive in celebration.

Interwoven with this story is a parallel tale unfolding in a convent in a developing country. A nun miraculously survives a fall from an airplane and believes her unwavering faith in God saved her. Inspired, the other nuns follow suit, leaping from planes without parachutes to prove their devotion. At first, they survive. But faith has its limits. By the film's end, wreckage and bodies wash ashore on a desolate beach.
