Throughout the entire run of Succession, the HBO hit series managed to keep a consistent high rating that made it one of the must-watch shows of the decade. The 28th Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival has announced its winners, with Silent City Driver from Mongolian director Sengedorj Janchivdorj taking home the Grand Prix for best film in the official selection, along with the best production design honor for Munkhbat Shirnen.

The film follows a 32-year-old man who, after serving 14 years in prison for his involvement in a murder case, emerges to face societal rejection and health challenges from a prison beating, finding solace only in caring for stray dogs. The festival jury praised Silent City Driver as “a dark fairy tale from Mongolia” that broke new ground with its unique cinematic style.

German drama No Dogs Allowed by director Steve Bache took the best feature award, with Southern Chronicles from Lithuanian helmer Ignas Miškinis winning the prize for best Baltic film. Indian drama Pyre from director Vinod Kapri scooped the festival’s audience award.

London, Aug 15 (Ians) English journalist and author Nicholas Evans, popularly known for writing ‘The Horse Whisperer’, which was made into a film by Robert Redford, passed away following a heart attack aged 72, reports ‘Variety’ quoting a statement issued by United Agents.

The agency said the “much-loved” author had died following a heart attack on August 9. “He lived a full and happy life, in his home on the banks of the River Dart in Devon,” the statement added.

Evans’s 1995 novel ‘The Horse Whisperer’ sold 20 million copies worldwide and was the number one bestseller in 20 countries. It has been translated into 40 languages.

English journalist and author Nicholas Evans, popularly known for writing ‘The Horse Whisperer’, which was made into a film by Robert Redford, passed away following a heart attack aged 72, reports ‘Variety’ quoting a statement issued by United Agents.

The agency said the “much-loved” author had died following a heart attack on August 9. “He lived a full and happy life, in his home on the banks of the River Dart in Devon,” the statement added.

Evans’s 1995 novel ‘The Horse Whisperer’ sold 20 million copies worldwide and was the number one bestseller in 20 countries. It has been translated into 40 languages.

The 1998 film, produced by and directed by Redford, also starred him alongside Scarlett Johansson, Kristin Scott Thomas and Sam Neill, according to ‘Variety’.

In a statement, Evans’s longtime agent, Caradoc King of United Agents, confirmed the news to Deadline and said that Evans died following a heart attack on Tuesday, August 9.

“He lived a full and happy life, in his home on the banks of the River Dart in Devon. He was much loved and leaves behind his wife Charlotte, and four children, Finlay, Lauren, Max and Harry,” the statement continued.

Born in 1950 in Worcestershire, England, Evans studied law at Oxford University and started his career as a journalist, working at the Evening Chronicle, a local newspaper based in Newcastle, England.

Veteran character actor Philip Baker Hall, whose TV credits includes The Loop, Modern Family and Falcon Crest, died on Sunday. He was 90.

“My neighbor, friend, and one of the wisest, most talented and kindest people I’ve ever met, Philip Baker Hall, died peacefully last night. He was surrounded by loved ones,” Hall’s friend and Los Angeles Times reporter Sam Farmer shared on Twitter. “The world has an empty space in it.”

Two distinctly Australian stories have taken out the top prizes at the inaugural Aidc Awards, with Daniel Gordon’s The Australian Dream and Southern Pictures’ Miriam Margolyes: Almost Australian awarded Best Feature Documentary and Best Documentary/Factual Series, respectively.

Held as a conclusion to this year’s Aidc, the awards ceremony crowned winners across six categories and distributed more than $200,000 of development funding and prizes.

The event was was broadcast live from Acmi in Melbourne to six cities around Australia.

It caps of this year’s online conference, which comprised more than 40 sessions across four days, and came with contributions from a diverse range of speakers and decision-makers.

Pursekey Productions director and principal producer Michaela Perske is the Australian International Documentary Conference (Aidc) Stanley Hawes Award recipient for 2021.

Perske’s recognition was announced today alongside the 20 nominees for the inaugural Aidc awards.

Designed to recognise the “outstanding completed works of new Australian documentary and factual content”, the awards will be presented in person across eight cities, as well as livestreamed to Aidc delegates.

Originally trained as a journalist, Perske has over 20 years of media experience across radio, print and TV.

Since turning her hand to factual content, she has produced films including Girls Can’t Surf, Black Divaz, After the Apology, and Destination Arnold.

In announcing the award, the Aidc said it wanted to acknowledge “her outstanding contribution to the Australian documentary and factual sector”.

The Variety Creative Change Award is given to an individual who uses their platform in the arts to create inclusive stories. This year it will be presented to Thede during the 4th Annual Mipcom Diversify TV Excellence Awards, which will be held on Oct. 13.

On Tales from the Loop, VFX producer Andrea Knoll helped build a world around an art book by Swedish artist Simon Stålenhag, working to preserve its painterly feeling in every frame.

Created by Nathaniel Halpern, the sci-fi drama follows the unlikely journeys of townspeople living above “The Loop”, a machine built to tap into the mysteries of the universe. In bringing this retro-futuristic world to life, the Tales team embraced a combination of practical and visual effects, always with an eye toward photorealistic imagery.

Challenged to deliver feature-quality effects on a compressed TV schedule, Knoll faced myriad hurdles on the series, while designing everything from robots, to futuristic tractors, to bionic arms. Ultimately, though, she would earn her first Emmy nomination for her work, finding the project to be one of the most collaborative and rewarding of her career.

Deadline: How did you get involved with Tales from the Loop?...

Bunya Productions is one of 18 Nsw-based production companies to receive slate funding from Screen Nsw.

Eighteen production companies will share in $1.7 million via Screen Nsw’s slate development fund, established in response to Covid-19.

Initially the agency had set aside $700,000 for the fund, but increased the amount by $1 million due to ‘the overwhelming strength of the projects demonstrated by a large number of applicants”.

Among the production companies to receive funding are Causeway Films, See-Saw Films, Screentime, Made Up Stories, Matchbox Pictures, Fremantle Australia, Goalpost Television and Cjz. Each has been given funding to develop a slate of three or more projects to be produced and/or post-produced in Nsw across TV drama, factual, features, documentary and online.

The projects span a range of subjects and genres including thrillers, play and novel adaptations, comedy, art and documentary series with many projects set to support filmmaking opportunities in regional Nsw and Western Sydney communities.

When composer Philip Glass was first approached by executive producer Mark Romanek to score “Tales From the Loop,” he was immediately drawn to the striking paintings of Simon Stålenhag that served as the basis for the existential sci-fi drama from Amazon Prime Video. Given his own spirituality, it was the perfect fit for Glass’ TV debut. Only he was too busy with other projects, so he suggested finding a collaborator — and that’s when Paul Leonard-Morgan joined the team.

It was no coincidence. Both had worked with documentary director Errol Morris, and Leonard-Morgan’s mesmerizing score for “Wormwood” was the clincher.

“The show is a unique narrative on humanity, so we didn’t want the score to feel like classic Hollywood, but more organic — like the music is just there in the loop, an integral part of the story,” Glass said.

Back when Matt Reeves was a film student, the young Angeleno trekked to his local cinema to watch Krzysztof Kieślowski’s, “Dekalog.” And then he went back again, and again, for five consecutive nights.

Reeves’ devotion wasn’t based entirely in cinematic obsession. Kieślowski’s acclaimed epic is nearly 10 hours long, and the theater only screened two entries per night, so Reeves had to come back if he wanted to finish the journey. But that wasn’t how the movie was made to be seen because “Dekalog” isn’t a movie at all. It is, in fact, a television show — a television show that audiences, primarily American audiences, didn’t know how to describe.
