Friday Night Lights Almost Went Full Circle (Long Before The Reboot)
Image
A modern Friday Night Lights reboot is happening, but the series was actually close to going full circle during its original run. Friday Night Lights has a complex history, with the show partially connected to a movie that was released several years prior to the pilot. However, the fictional landscape almost became even more complicated before the new Friday Night Lights reboot was even being considered, as the original Friday Night Lights was one step away from completing a full cycle.

A new Friday Night Lights reboot is in the works, causing the original Friday Night Lights series to once again be in the public eye. The reboot will start with an all-new Friday Night Lights movie, although it will have an entirely different cast from the beloved series. The film will then lead into a new Friday Night Lights TV show, continuing the narrative of the reboot movie. The...

Bryce Dallas Howard Stars In New Trailer For Disney’s Pete’S Dragon
Watch the brand new trailer for Disney’s Pete’S Dragon, featuring spectacular never-before-seen footage of Pete’s dragon, Elliot.

See the film when it flies onto the big screen in 3D August 12.

A reimagining of Disney’s cherished family film, Pete’S Dragon is the adventure of an orphaned boy named Pete and his best friend Elliot, who just so happens to be a dragon.

The movie stars Bryce Dallas Howard (“Jurassic World”), Oakes Fegley (“This is Where I Leave You”), Wes Bentley (“The Hunger Games”), Karl Urban (“Star Trek”), Oona Laurence (“Southpaw”), Isiah Whitlock, Jr. (“Cedar Rapids”) and Oscar® winner Robert Redford (“Captain America: The Winter Soldier”). The film, which is directed by David Lowery (“Ain’t Them Bodies Saints”), is written by Lowery & Toby Halbrooks based on a screenplay by Malcolm Marmorstein and produced by Jim Whitaker (“The Finest Hours,” “Friday Night Lights”), with Barrie M. Osborne (“The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring,” “The Great Gatsby”) serving as executive producer.

For years, old wood carver Mr. Meacham (Robert Redford) has delighted local children with his tales of the fierce dragon that resides deep in the woods of the Pacific Northwest. To his daughter, Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard), who works as a forest ranger, these stories are little more than tall tales…until she meets Pete (Oakes Fegley).

Pete is a mysterious 10-year-old with no family and no home who claims to live in the woods with a giant, green dragon named Elliot. And from Pete’s descriptions, Elliot seems remarkably similar to the dragon from Mr. Meacham’s stories. With the help of Natalie (Oona Laurence), an 11-year-old girl whose father Jack (Wes Bentley) owns the local lumber mill, Grace sets out to determine where Pete came from, where he belongs, and the truth about this dragon.

Meet ‘Pete’s Dragon’ in New Trailer For David Lowery’s Disney Remake
While some may already feel burned-out by the summer movie season, there are more promising films to come. One of our most-anticipated features will arrive in mid-August. It’s David Lowery‘s follow-up to his sublime drama Ain’t Them Bodies Saints: a reboot of Disney’s 1977 Pete’s Dragon. If you’ve never seen the original, it follows a orphan kid who brings his magical dragon to a new town. With a cast featuring Bryce Dallas Howard, Robert Redford, Karl Urban, and Wes Bentley, a new trailer has now arrived.

“We explored pink, just to see what would happen,” Lowery tells EW, commenting on his title character’s design. “From the get-go, the aesthetic was always to make everything feel as handmade as possible, including effects. To really have it feel like a blur between a very grounded realistic world and a world in which a big green dragon that can turn invisible can exist.” Check out the new trailer and poster below.

New Pete's Dragon Footage Shows Elliott Taking Flight
Charlie Callas and Sean Marshall in Meu Amigo, o Dragão (1977)
Earlier today, Disney debuted a new poster for their upcoming remake Pete's Dragon, along with news that the full trailer will debut tomorrow. Star Bryce Dallas Howard will debut the new footage on Access Hollywood, but for those who can't wait another day, a brief trailer teaser has arrived. This footage gives us a closer look at Oakes Fegley as Pete, along with his mighty dragon Elliott as the beast takes flight.

Disney debuted the first trailer in February, during ABC's The Wonderful World of Disney: Disneyland 60 TV special. Disney also previewed this remake during their CinemaCon presentation in April, but we don't know if this new trailer will be the same as the footage shown at the convention. Pete's Dragon could be one of this summer's last big hits at the box office, opening in theaters August 12, going up against Sony's Sausage Party, Universal's Spectral and Paramount's Florence Foster Jenkins.

Pete’s Dragon Stands Tall In Latest Still As Director Talks Reimagining A Classic
Making it three for three with Entertainment Weekly scoops – following hot on the heels of new images for both Jason Bourne and Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters – the outlet has unveiled a new still for David Lowery’s (Ain’t Them Bodies Saints) live-action fairytale, Pete’s Dragon.

Yes, Pete’s reptilian ally may have been camera shy up until now, but today’s all-new shot showcases the beast – bearing the name Elliot – in all its furry glory. Emerging from a 40-year hibernation, Pete’s Dragon is a total reimagining of the Disney classic, introducing newcomer Oakes Fegley in the role of Pete, a lonesome 10-year-old that takes solace in the company of a rather unusual friend.

In breathing new life into the motion picture, the House of Mouse was conscious to retain much of the creature design glimpsed in the 1977 original. According to Lowery, there were “certain things about the...

The First Teaser for Pete's Dragon has Arrived
Last week saw the debut of the first poster for Disney's upcoming Pete's Dragon remake, along with the promise of the trailer to come. Now it's arrived, and you can check it out right here to see your first look at the revamped classic.

If you're a fan of the original Pete's Dragon and eager to see what the remake will be like...well, you may have to keep waiting. The first teaser has arrived, but it does little to tell you about the movie or sell us on the need for its existence:

See what I mean? I may be coming down on it a bit harsh, but I was expecting a little bit more from it. If you know nothing of the original story, this trailer won't help new audiences out, and seems to actively avoid the whimsical nature of the movie which made it so fun to begin with.

Pete’s Dragon Lurks In First Trailer For Disney’s Re-Imagined Classic
It may seem strange for one studio to commit to the release of two re-imaginings of past glories about orphan boys living in wooded areas – especially in the same year – but this very particular trend looks set to pay off for Walt Disney Studios in spectacular fashion, as The Jungle Book charges into theatres in April, while Pete’s Dragon is scheduled to dominate late summer. Up until now, little has been seen of this project, but with the first trailer now available, we can see that something magical this way comes.

There has always been something fascinating about the idea of dragons – these mythical creatures that have inspired so many centuries of storytelling. It seems the idea of lost children, fending for themselves and discovering spectacular secrets is also fascinating, as that plot device has given us generations of tales to pass on, too.

Pete’s Dragon has been...

First Trailer For David Lowery’s ‘Pete’s Dragon’ Remake
One of my favorite Sundance films of the last few years was Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, a sublime drama starring Rooney Mara, Casey Affleck and Ben Foster, which marked the break out for director David Lowery. When his follow-up was announced a few years ago, it caught us all by surprise. Yes, he jumped to a reboot of Disney’s 1977 Pete’s Dragon, tasked with reinventing “the core story,” but this time without the musical numbers of the original animated/live-action hybrid family film.

If you’ve never seen the Disney original, it follows a orphan kid who brings his magical dragon to a new town and hijinks ensue. With a cast featuring Bryce Dallas Howard, Robert Redford, Karl Urban, Wes Bentley, the first trailer has arrived, which acts more like a teaser, setting up our main characters and the tone. This is one of the most promising, and curious,...

Suicide Squad: Jay Hernandez joins the cast
Might Jared Leto's Joker have some company in the form of Jay Hernandez in Suicide Squad?

With Joel Kinnaman now taking on the role of Rick Flagg, after Tom Hardy dropped out, the ensemble for David Ayer's Suicide Squad movie is pretty much in place. Margot Robbie, Will Smith, Jared Leto, Jai Courtney, Viola Davis and Cara Delevingne are all locked and loaded. And the DC comic book adaptation is set to start shooting in April.

Which means there's still time to add a face or two to the cast.

The latest addition to the line-up? That'd be Jay Hernandez, of Friday Night Lights fame, who is taking on a "mystery role" in the new movie. The suggestion thus far is that he'll be playing a cell mate of The Joker, but as you might expect, there's been nothing close to official word on that.

Suicide Squad is...

Jay Hernandez Infiltrates Suicide Squad
Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill in Batman vs Superman: A Origem da Justiça (2016)
Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto, Jai Courtney, Cara Delevingne, Viola Davis and possibly Joel Kinnaman are already in place at the top of the cast, which leaves David Ayer's Suicide Squad to start building up its supporting players. Next on that list is Jay Hernandez, who according to The Wrap's sources is in talks to jump aboard.Hostel and Friday Night Lights star Hernandez's potential role hasn't been specified yet, but there are rumblings that he'd be an inmate on the same Arkham cell block as Leto's Joker. The film finds a group of DC Comics villains and anti-heroes including the aformentioned Joker, Deadshot (Smith), Boomerang (Courtney), Harley Quinn (Robbie) and Enchantress (Delevingne) rounded up to go on hazardous missions for the Us government. Davis is playing shady government agent Amanda Waller. It's set to be Warners’ follow-up to next March's Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice, with...

Did the 2005 Oscars get it right?
With the 2015 Oscars coming up this weekend, we go back ten years to see if the 2005 awards still hold up today...

It was during an interview with Mark Kermode that I asked him how long someone really needs to gestate on a film, and come up with a proper review. "About ten years", he said. I get his point. Each awards season, it's about, at best, what feels like the best film right then. Not the one that settles over a period of time, or shows you new things each time you watch it. But the one that you watched once, and affected you once. It's the only way, anyway, I can think of why A Beautiful Mind won a Best Picture Oscar.

This weekend, then, is the Academy Awards once more. And I thought it'd be worth rewinding ten years, to see whether the Academy's choices on February 27th...

9 greatest American football movies: Waterboy to Friday Night Lights
Woody Harrelson, Goldie Hawn, Wesley Snipes, Jsu Garcia, Tab Thacker, and Mykelti Williamson in Uma Gatinha Boa de Bola (1986)
The 2014/2015 NFL season is well under way, with some teams already looking like genuine Super Bowl contenders and others looking so bad they seem to be playing a different sport entirely.

With the time difference between the UK and Us meaning that most games don't kick-off until the evening hours over here, there's plenty of time to kill on Sundays waiting for the matches to start. Digital Spy picks out nine American football-based movies to pass the time on Sundays and get in the mood for the real thing...

1. Friday Night Lights (2004)

Based on the book of the same name (the TV series came later), Friday Night Lights tells the story of a high school American football outfit struggling to be the best they can be under the extreme pressure of expectation placed on them by the small Texan community they represent.

Each of the kids in the team dreams...

Emmys Q&A: Billy Bob Thornton On Channeling Evil In FX’s ‘Fargo’
Fargo: Uma Comédia de Erros (1996)
Billy Bob Thornton has strung together a career’s worth of memorable performances in films including Sling Blade, A Simple Plan, Primary Colors, Bad Santa, Monster’s Ball, Love Actually, Friday Night Lights, and the Joel and Ethan Coen-directed Intolerable Cruelty and The Man Who Wasn’t There. Has he ever played as riveting a character as his small screen turn as Lorne Malvo, the manipulative, malevolent murderous catalyst for the series transfer of the Coen Brothers film classic Fargo? Thornton is smack in the center of an Emmy category stacked with fellow movie stars lured by the superior writing and character development largely missing from features nowadays. Here, he tells Deadline why the small screen was the perfect forum for his resurgence, and what happens when an actor interprets a mortal character as something else.

Deadline: Lorne Malvo facilitated all the good and bad that happens in Fargo‘s snowy Minnesota town.

Bret Michaels in The Apprentice (2004)
Everything mentioned from 2006 and 2007 in VH1's 'I Love the 2000s'
Bret Michaels in The Apprentice (2004)
Well, we’re getting into the weird part. Considering that 2006 and 2007 were mere blinks ago, the idea of revisiting these years via VH1′s rose-colored nostalgia goggles is certainly an unsettling one.

But oh, has I Love the 2000s officially gone off the rails since its promising beginning. None of the topics discussed in Friday’s two-parter seemed even remotely worth visiting—is anybody clamoring to discuss Flavor And Rock of Love? In fact, the mere presence of “bacon” and “putting Mentos in Diet Coke” as nostalgic references should signify that they’re really digging deep here to try and...

Watch: 'Fargo' Featurette Explores Coen Brothers Universe Of TV Show Plus 3 Promos & 12 New Pics
While seeming blasphemous at first blush, FX has taken great pains to both nod to the Coen Brothers’ sublime original in its marketing while trying to prepare general audiences for its limited series take on “Fargo.” To further help confused viewers—and maybe to assuage the fears of fans of the original—the network has released a featurette to properly set-up the series’s point-of-view in relation to the 1996 film. The roughly two-minute-long featurette has the cast and crew of the TV series pitching the show as an expansion of the original film, taking place in the Coen Brothers universe but with entirely new characters and a new storyline. We’re still on the fence on this one but with the cast the show’s lined up, there’s a chance it may end up on the level as “Friday Night Lights” and “Hannibal” as TV spinoffs done right. Starring Billy Bob Thornton,...

The cast of Angel: 10 years on
Feature Sarah Dobbs 5 Mar 2014 - 07:00

Sarah digs into the post-Angel careers of David Boreanaz, Alexis Denisof, Amy Acker, Charisma Carpenter and more...

It’s been about a decade since the last episode of Angel, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer spin-off series about the vampire with a soul, aired. The final episode of season five, Not Fade Away, first appeared on Us television screens on 19 May 2004. That seems simultaneously like a very long time ago, and not very long ago at all, because time is vast and human brains are small and fallible, but it’s safe to say that in TV years, it’s a pretty long goddamned time.

The men and women behind the characters we used to spend one night a week with have gone on to other things – some bigger and better, others kind of rubbish – and unless you’re a particularly obsessive superfan, you...

GossipCenter Remembers Stars Lost in 2013
As we say our goodbye to 2013, GossipCenter remembers the remarkable icons and Hollywood legends lost over the past year.

Whether it was winning the hearts of young ladies by singing popular tunes on "Glee" or assising millions of movie-goes making their big screen pick with reputable reviews, the stars we lost this year will never be forgotten.

Cory Monteith:

Making for one of the most memorable moments of 2013, the "Glee" star passed away in his Vancouver hotel room from an overdose on July 13. Cory was only 31 years old leaving behind a touching mark on Hollywood and further opened up the conversation for substance abuse prevention.

Though many of his industry pals felt the tragic loss, his girlfriend Lea Michele was arguably the hardest hit with the news. It took some time, but Lea eventually opened up about her loss and said, “Thank you all for helping me through this...

Lorrie Moore Talks Watching Television and How Leisureliness Can Allow for Great Storytelling
Matthew Perry, Ben Foster, Hilary Swank, Ginnifer Goodwin, and Lauren Graham in Leis da Vida (2008)
Lorrie Moore is best known as a lauded writer of fiction, of razor-edged, beautifully wrought short stories published in collections like "Birds of America" and "Like Life" and novels like "Anagrams" and "Who Will Run the Frog Hospital?" But she's also become an unexpected and interesting chronicler and analyzer of television, in essays that can span both the personal and the critical. Here she is in the New York Review of Books dwelling on "Homeland" and how "shared torment is not enough for love between spies." In another piece at the same outlet, now locked away behind a paywall, she described discussing "Friday Night Lights" at a party, and how it was "the brooding, beautiful, and slightly doomed Tim Riggins, handsome as a statue and bleakly craving goodness, about whom no one could stop talking." Here, on "The Wire." As overused as the term "golden age of television" has become,...

Producer Gregory Plotkin Heads to Directing on 'Paranormal Activity 5'
After years of producing the found footage Paranormal Activity horror franchise, including the spin-off Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones, Gregory Plotkin will take position as director of the forthcoming sequel Paranormal Activity 5. Deadline has word that Plotkin will make his directorial debut with the horror sequel arriving in October of 2014. Aside from his work in the successful horror franchise which started in 2009, Plotkin also worked as an editor or assistant editor on some big films like The Break-Up, Friday Night Lights, The Insider and he also worked as a visual effects assistant editor on Pleasantville. We're still not sure where the fifth sequel will take audiences, especially considering the end of the last film really upped the ante as far as the spirit world. The franchise might be running out of steam, but they're cheap to make and always make big bucks at the box office. At the very least,...
