No ,it's not a remake of the 1949 film based on Stanislas André Steeman 's novel "crimes à vendre" .
It's another Mocky's loony movie ; could-not-care-less direction, disjointed screenplay, two good actors wasted (Michel Serrault,Mickael Lonsdale) , all the man's trademarks ;but do not get me wrong, some of his movies ,in their own way ,succeed :,notably "la bête de miséricorde" "le témoin" "noir comme le souvenir" .. But those had firm well-constructed scripts .
The only reason you would sit through this not-so-funny farce is Jacques Villeret :a family man, overweight and no handsome at all ,he dreams of fancy cars and beautiful women while doing away with some of his fellow men ,by contract (?); the actor survives a poor story and the only good scene occurs in the church :the serial killer prays Jesus surrounded by candles : "I never kill women ,children or innocents ,my Lord, my task is to get rid of criminals ,of thieves ,of this underworld who oppress the world ".
The late Dick Rivers ,a rock singer who took his pseud from a Presley movie, appears as a gangster.

I have read the crime novel from which this amusing crime comedy flick is adapted. The novelist is named Lou Cameron and it tells the story of a petty law abiding citizen who dreams to belong to the New-York mafia by killing mobsters, rivals of the local NYC king pin. An unusual story, from which the adaptation is not too far, except the Mocky's touch, the famous and eternal Mocky's atmosphere, trademark. Voluntarly lousy, distorted, caricatured.... He hires has been actors whom no one had heard about since decades, journalists, stage burlesque comedians, singers, journalists... Mocky will remain Mocky forever. It is not really a comedy, a pure comedy, just a crime story with weird, unlikely elements. If you liked the novel, you should like the film too. Many action scenes and climax take place iin the Parisian subway. Interesting.
