Amusing, but so much going on, it's a little dizzying

Kick the Moon is very much the predecessor to Attack the Gas Station, the director's previous film. While the setting and the characters have changed, the way the characterizations are handled, the style of humor, the plot twists all strike such a similar chord that it's hard not to see the resemblance between the two.

The story, however, is quite different. This revolves around two people, a former school badass turned respectable teacher and a former school geek turned badass gangster. They meet by chance as the latter returns to the hometown to "take it over". They start a tense friendship that flares into antagonism as a firecracker of a woman appears in their lives. Of course, things get increasingly crazy with multiple other players involved, including a bumbling cop, a displaced gangster, a quartet of high school students and more.

The film sprawls over the town its set in, but fortunately, we don't lose sight of any characters during the process. However, due to the sheer number of side characters, it can get a little unwieldy to keep track of what's going on in the story. At the same time, because the leads work so well together, both in terms of acting and story, it's still easy to follow what's going on. This isn't a classy or artfully shot film. It's a rough-and-tumble over-the-top comedy that manages to be amusing. But, I do wish it were cut down a little so that there wasn't so much going on--at the same time, that would take away from its sometimes bewildering nature.

In the end, this is an enjoyable film that suffers a little from just having too much going on. If you liked Attack the Gas Station, you will likely enjoy Kick the Moon. It lacks the social commentary of the first film, but adds in a more meaningful story about friendship, so it works on a slightly different level. However, it's not for everyone. Decent. 7/10.

Worthy follow up to "Attack the Gas Station", but...

While San-Jin Kim's follow up to "Attack the Gas Station" is a much more involved effort (many more locations, characters, and more complex fight scenes), as well as featuring many familiar faces, it appears that AtGS raised the bar a little too high.

Certainly, there are many funny moments in the film, although lacking some of the absurdist tone of AtGS. Much more violent as well, although lacking much of the political overtones of its predecessor (as it is, violence feels almost glamorized at times).

However, it can definitely stand on its own. Telling the story of a bizarre love triangle between a school intellect turned gangster, a teenage thug turned teacher, and a noodle shop owner, it makes for an interesting comedy which takes on some rather screw-ball tendencies.

Despite the sometimes gritty subject matter, the heart of the film is all about friendship (almost in the same vein as John Woo's "The Killer", even), with the rivalries of the two main characters being cast aside when necessary.

It's by the same people that made ATTACK THE GAS STATION, and it's really really good.

There, that's the easy bit. But I must admit that I'm hard pressed to think how to convey *why* it's so good. Or even what it's about.

OK, it's about friendship. That much is easy. And there is a story, though for the first half of the movie you'd be forgiven for thinking otherwise because the movie is in no rush to tell you it. Basically, there is a legend amongst the kids at a certain school about an epic fight years before, between their school and the a Seoul school in their city on a field trip. The scale and bloodiness of the fight is said to be still unmatched, and in their minds the kids who led the two schools into battle are the ultimate heroes. What they don't realise is that one of those leaders runs a small street noodle stall, and the other is actually their home class teacher. Not the powerful gangsters they expected them to be. The one kid from the school that did grow up to be a top gangster is ironically the only one that didn't take part in the fight, but who studied and developed his brains instead of fighting.

The movie is basically a character piece, and each character has their own thread of story that sometimes run parallel to each other, sometimes cross each other and do eventually tie together. The main characters are the teacher and the gangster, who meet each other after all the intervening years and strike up a friendship they could never have had when one was the school boss and the other the school geek. The two of them clash, however, when they meet the sister of one of the teacher's pupils, an incredibly cute and sassy girl. Their story is echoed in the secondary thread, about the girl's brother and his friends - high school students who are enamoured with the tales of gangs and gangstered, and cynical about the value of an education.

That's probably more than you need to know, but still no way towards really describing the movie. The story is a rich and subtle one - subtle enough that I'm sure many viewers won't even notice it's there at all. Perhaps that's because it's not a story of actions and events, it's a story of people and relationships. The movie focuses on who the characters are rather than what happens to them. Plot development exists mainly to develop the characters, and as such it is kept in the background so as not to distract too much. The characters in the movie are excellent, very complex and interesting and distinctive. Very memorable. The acting is superb, such that I never really noticed it as acting - the people were the characters, and it was never a stretch of imagination to keep that in mind. I especially liked the actress playing the sister - Kim Hye-Su, and would love to see some more of her.

A lot of the movie is dialogue heavy, and it's very well written and delivered, never becoming boring. Thankfully the subtitle translation is excellent, as this is a movie that would die with poor subs.

So half the movie is dialogue, and it is excellent. And the other half of the movie is... well, people beating the crap out of each other for the most part. There is an absolute ton of fighting in the movie, indeed for the first half there is more fighting than talking (and the fighting only stops briefly after that). No kung-fu here, just street fighting, but well choreographed and filmed.

The movie is sold as a "comic action special" on the DVD case, which I think probably creates the wrong expectations. It's not 'comic action' at all. It is a funny movie, but it's a subtle humour that's mainly in the performances and dialogue delivery rather than anything that is said or done. Possibly wryly humourous, though it's so long since I've used that phrase I forget exactly what it means .

I still find it hard to find something to hang this review on, to capture the essence of the movie. It's not the kind of movie that can easily be distilled and packaged. Ultimately I probably can't do much more than say "It's really really good" and hope that you will take the time to confirm this fact for yourselves .

Could have been great but couldn't stick the landing

This movie has a lot of great stuff to recommend it. It's very funny, and the little world it creates is fascinating and a lot of fun. All the main characters and the supporting part are interesting, and the actors (and actress) involved turn in great performances. Up until the end I was ready to call it a masterpiece. Sadly, the director just couldn't pull it all together in the end, and the tightly woven plot just seems to fall apart. Definitely a more mature piece than Attack the Gas Station, with potential to surpass it, but ATGS hangs together better and never loses its high. Worth seeing though, and I look forward to anything this director wants to try. The guy is a real talent. Special tip of the hat to Sung-jae Lee, that guy is awesome.

    Korean Comedy Action Flick

I loved Attack The Gas Station and I finally got around to watching this and I love this too! It's got a huge amount of epic character-development. The script is well-written and it is long but it sure packs a lot of action!

There is a lot of choreography and some of it is very funny and the acting is generally superb. I love the dialogue and how angry characters get from their squables and how other characters wind others up on purpose or for revenge!

It's got a lot of banter and a lot of passion and a lof comedy and a lot of fun! It's a really enjoyable popcorn movie and it's tough to do these long action films and the stunt team did a really excellent job. I don't know the budget but around this time lots of new cinema was coming out like J-horror and such like! Well this is k-comedy and action!

I really enjoyed it and I really reccommend in sitting-back and just letting it embrace you. It's a yakuza movie; a comedy movie and an educational movie all rolled together! I loved it. On the awesome Third Window Films.
