  • Terry: What do you think went through Billy's mind when he did it?
  • Sam: The bullet.
  • Sam: [at the house, after Billy's funeral] Well, you know he was - he was taking Prozac.
  • [pause]
  • Sam: I guess it didn't work.
  • Paul: [after slipping Julia a pill] Okay, take a few deep breaths, okay? You'll be asleep soon.
  • Julia Lund: Asleep? I'm not gonna go to sleep.
  • [freaks out]
  • Terry: I mean, I'm 24-years-old and I walk into a dark room now and it's like I'm five again.
  • Julia Lund: [to Paul] They grabbed me in my apartment! In my apartment, they tried to get me!
  • Billy: When you hear a baby crying, or you hear a kid crying, you keep moving, okay? Children can sen - sense them. It's your warning.
  • Julia Lund: Warning against what?
  • Billy: Also, they affect the electrical things. They affect the lights and the phones. They - they affect things.
  • Paul: Playing a good game of pool's a sign of being well-rounded, you know.
  • Julia Lund: Says who?
  • Paul: Some dead English guy.
  • Paul: [Troy and Darren are watching the news on TV about rolling blackouts throughout the city] Speaking of, you guys pay the electric bill?
  • Darren: Well, Paul, you see there isn't... the issue here...
  • Troy: You know what - actually, we were thinking, like why should we pay for something we're not even gonna get, right?
  • Paul: You got fired again.
  • Troy: Yeah.
  • Billy: [to Julia] They can't be in the light. They hide in the dark so you can't see them.
  • Billy: [to Julia] I mean, I've been doing research and reading... and
  • [exhales]
  • Billy: I don't think I'm alone. Poe, I think - I think he saw them too. His writing's dark and hopeless and he went crazy too and I...
  • Billy: I even tried to find out if there's other people like us. I made friends to see - see if it wasn't just me and you know what I found out?
  • Julia Lund: What?
  • Billy: Nobody can help me.
  • Billy: I'm scared.
  • [electricity buzzes and baby cries]
  • Billy: [Billy whimpers] I'm scared.
  • Julia Lund: There's nothing to be scared of.
  • Billy: You're wrong.
  • [cries]
  • Terry: [talking about Sam] The guy engages his mouth before his brain sometimes.
  • Julia Lund: Do you have any idea what he was trying to tell us with all this?
  • [holds up a battery taken from Billy's drawer full of batteries]
  • Terry: Maybe he was planning for a really long camping trip.
  • [pause]
  • Terry: Or that he was afraid of the dark.
  • Julia Lund: I know that feeling.
  • Terry: When I was five, I watched my sister drown in a lake where we used to spend our summers. Right after, I started to suffer from these terrible night terrors. There was one particularly bad night. I woke up screaming my head off. My parents finally managed to get me back to sleep, and a couple of hours later, my mother came back to check on me and, uh, I was gone. They looked everywhere... in the attic, in the basement, all over the house. My mother was hysterical. She thought I'd been kidnapped, or I'd run off, or who knows what? Then my father went into the backyard and he heard a noise in the doghouse, of all places. He stooped down, looked in, and there I was, huddled in the back. Naturally, he reached in and... that's when I stabbed him in the eye with a kitchen knife. I was convinced he wasn't my father... that he was some kind of demon coming for me. I was absolutely sure of it. I haven't had that feeling since I was a kid, but I have it now... and so does Sam... and, we thought, you might too.
  • Julia Lund: Are you drunk?
  • Paul: I prefer intoxicated.
  • [laughs]
  • Dr. Booth: Julia?
  • Julia Lund: Yes, Dr. Booth.
  • Dr. Booth: [they shake hands] I hardly recognize you. In fact, I don't recognize you at all, but come on in.
  • Sam: [Terry picks at a bandaged scab on her ankle] Look, Terry, stop picking at it or it's never gonna heal, okay?
  • Terry: It's not healing anyway, you know, I might as well get some satisfaction.
  • [pulls adhesive bandage off and pokes at it]
  • Terry: I think it's getting worse.
  • Terry: Maybe it's cancer.
  • Terry: You know, there's something seriously demented about you. Do you know that?
  • Sam: You know, maybe I should've gone to law school.
  • Terry: Like I said... demented.
  • Julia Lund: Sarah, do you have bad dreams?
  • Sarah: Sometimes.
  • Julia Lund: What happens in your dreams?
  • Sarah: They come for me.
  • Julia Lund: Who comes?
  • Sarah: They.
  • Julia Lund: Why do they come for you?
  • Sarah: To eat me.
  • Billy: [electricity starts to buzz] They're here.
  • Billy: You remember those night terrors that we used to have?
  • Julia Lund: What, when we were kids?
  • Billy: [nods head "yes"] That's when they marked us. And now they're back.
  • Julia Lund: I think our night terrors may not have been induced by emotional trauma at all. Maybe something really did come for us when we were kids and planted something in us and, whatever it was, it left a mark... just like that little girl's.
  • Dr. Booth: And now they're coming back?
  • Julia Lund: Yes, and that's why the marks reappear! So that they can find us and take us back to the place in our night terrors... out of the light.
  • [pause]
  • Julia Lund: I know how it sounds.
  • Julia Lund: Subject is suffering posttraumatic stress from witnessing the suicide of a close friend. Influenced by the erratic behavior of two strangers she allows herself to entertain the paranoid schizophrenic delusions of her dead friend.
  • Troy: [walks in on Julia naked] Whoa! Hello nurse!
  • Paul: Get out!
  • [throws something at him]
  • Paul: Get out!
  • Paul: [after Troy walked in on her naked] Are you still mad?
  • Julia Lund: I'm not mad, I'm embarrassed... but I'll get over it.
  • Paul: Troy probably won't though.
