Alana Austin joined the cast with the impression that she would be wearing a wig for her masquerade as a boy. She later found out, much to her dismay, that she would actually be required to cut her hair.
Although this was a unique interpretation of Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night" at the time, it served as later inspiration for Ela é o Cara (2006), which heavily borrows elements from the movie: setting it in high school with teenagers, using a sport as the catalyst for the plot, having the Viola character disguise herself as her twin brother rather than a completely separate identity, having the Duke Orsino character provide lessons in exchange for help with courting the Olivia character, and flipping the perceived weakness of femininity in the original play into strong support of women competing equally alongside men.
The riders that Andrea encounters on her home track are Jeremy McGrath, Travis Pastrana, and Steve Lamson, who were all professional motocross racers at the time. McGrath receives a couple of name drops during the movie itself. Sean Collier, another professional motocross racer, also appears in the movie as a competitor during the cup races.

Riley Smith (Dean Talon) said years later at an interview while attending an event at Eastern lowa Arts Academy that this role gave him a new found understanding of the misogynistic world and that he vowed he would always strive to make the world a better place so that women won't feel the need to dress as men to succeed.
