Ali Baba Bujang Lapok

This is another of P.Ramlee's gem which you will never get sick of watching. I must have watched it like millions of times since I was a child and I'm still watching it and no, I'm not ever going to get sick of it. Though the movie is based on the Ali Baba & The Forty Thieves fable, don't expect too much from it as it is supposed to be a light-hearted version of the myth. Just watch it for the humour and entertainment and knowing that back then, they did do good movies even if they didn't have an original story!

Along the way, you might see a lot of familiar faces in other P.Ramlee's movies - the extras all worked in the same movies together as they were already friends and familiar with each other's working styles. Plus, it was cheap too and back then, they didn't do it for the money or glory - they did it for the love of the art! Can't say the same for most of the people in the business now.

Ali Baba Bujang Lapok starring the legendary late superstar P. Ramlee is a must watch. Filled with very laugable comedy, it remains a masterpiece and is perhaps the funniest movie ever made

In my opinion the best of the Bujang Lapok Series. P Ramlee in the uncommon role playing the villain; Aziz Sattar as the simple and slightly dimwitted Ali Baba, and S Samsuddin in probably one of his best roles, playing the miser brother of Ali Baba, Kassim Baba, and clearly steals most scenes with his miserly presence.

The vision P Ramlee had in extending a should-be short story into a film is something to be proud of. The cast are natural and clearly having fun, and you can see the closeness the cast were amongst themselves. The ad-lib just gives the film that extra touch.

The scene of Kassim Baba stealing every single item in the cave, including the light bulb will remain one of the most memorable highlights in the Malay comedy film moments. The way in which P Ramlee relates to everyday life is brilliant- for example the thieves have a union to ensure that they do not act out of line amongst the other thieves!!

This film also marked the debut of the then 18 year old Sarimah.

Sad to say I don't find any modern Malay films that could live up to any of late P Ramlee movies. There's a reason why he is a legend amongst Malays and Malaysians. His ideas was original and knows that he's job was to entertain and that's what he did.

Ali Baba bujang Lapok has to be one of my favourite P Ramlee movies simply because it felt like a lot of effort was put into the movie - plus it made me laugh right throughout the whole movie. I felt like everything, especially the set, was lavishly decorated and put together so that audience get to experience the 'Arabian Night' kind of theme...

I've watched this film numerous times since I was a little kid and it never gets dull!
