Brutus Beefcake was originally supposed to be the challenger for the Intercontinental Championship. He was attacked and had his head cut open by "Outlaw" Ron Bass's spur after a match on "WWF Superstars of Wrestling." This development came after boxes for the Coliseum Video VHS release were printed, on which Brutus appears as the named challenger to The Honky Tonk Man. A corrective sticker, declaring The Ultimate Warrior as challenger, was placed over Brutus' name. The main reason for the change to the match was because, according to an interview he conducted in 2005, Beefcake claimed that the Warrior threatened to leave the WWF if he didn't get the title shot, and so Beefcake stepped aside and made the best of it, which resulted in his storyline injury.
According to Bruce Prichard, the plan was to have either have Jessica Hahn or Ric Flair as the guest on The Brother Love Show, but those plans fell though.
Ric Flair stated that he was in talks with the WWF to make his company debut at this event, to begin a program with then WWF Champion Randy Savage. Flair ultimately decided to stay with his friends in WCW for a couple more years. Flair lamented that he probably gave up a huge amount of money by staying in WCW, but to him, being part of the Four Horsemen was like being part of the Beatles.
Contrary to Brutus Beefcake's version of events, multiple WWF officials say the Intercontinental title match was changed simply because Ultimate Warrior was far more popular than Brutus Beefcake, thus would make a better drawing Intercontinental champion. Historically, Ultimate Warrior would go on to be the best drawing Intercontinental champion ever as far as ticket sales and merchandise sales were concerned.
