20 Indian Murder Mystery Movies That Keep The Viewers Hooked
Image
Genre cinema can be incredibly transgressive. Like termite art, they mutely chew on the boundaries of conformation. In horror, courtroom drama, noir, murder mysteries, and many more, the director is paramount for these films. How they treat it saves a good genre film from being generic, which most certainly holds true for murder mysteries. Plots in these films are like the foundation, invisible, and pretty similar in nature. However, the material used to construct the building on this foundation is the treatment. The foundation can and should be strong enough to hold the building, but what the audience would buy is the building.

The functionality of atmosphere, mood, pace, suspense, cinematography, lighting, and brain-teasing tension plays a much larger part in a murder mystery. Without these, we just have a story where we’re waiting for the big reveal. More often than not, the lack of slick treatment gives us a generic mystery.

‘Kakuda’ Review: Sonakshi Sinha-Led Horror Comedy Shines Light On Social Alienation
Image
It’s common knowledge that Bollywood’s history with horror is really shaky. Despite lacking in quality filmmaking and storytelling, films like Mahal, Gumnaam, and the works done by the Ramsay brothers have gained cult status due to a severe case of nostalgia. Thanks to the Bhatts, the 2000s and 2010s were plagued with half-hearted remakes of international horror films. And it was probably the mercurial success of Bhool Bhulaiyaa, the remake of Manichitrathazhu, that caused the Hindi film industry to steer away from serious horror films. Yes, we get the occasional Tumbbad, but the landscape is largely filled with Go Goa Gone, Stree, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, and Bhediya. And, to be honest, they are quite profitable. Aditya Sarpotdar is riding this tide with Zombivli, Munjya, and now Kakuda. So, let’s talk about it.

Aditya Sarpotdar’s Kakuda, which has been written by Avinash Dwivedi and Chirag Garg, tells...

Esha Gaur on singing a haunting lullaby for '1920: Horrors of the Heart'
Image
Singer Esha Gaur is making her debut with Krishna Bhatt’s ‘1920 Horrors of the Heart’ as a playback singer. The film’s teaser launched recently with a hauntingly melodious and soothing lori.

Speaking about it, Esha says, ”This is a special debut and I am going to cherish this forever. We all know the huge contribution from Bhatt Productions in Hindi mainstream movies, especially in 90’s films like Aashiqui, Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Aayee or Hum Hai Rahi Pyar Ke – the list is endless.”

She further says, “People were engrossed in the sweet melodies sung by all the stalwarts like Kumar Shanu, Alka Yagnik, Sadhna Sargam, Abhijeet. When I heard this song for the first time after being asked to sing it, I had shivers down my spine because of its sinister and eerie melody. My colleague Puneet Dixit has composed the songs. He has matched Mahesh and Vikram Bhatt...

Image
Close-Up is a feature that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. Raja Nawathe's Gumnaam (1965) is now showing in the series A Journey into Indian Cinema. In front of a quaint hotel in an undisclosed location, a man gets run over. Review: "Ghost World" (2001); Criterion Blu-ray Special Edition
By Todd Garbarini

High school friends Enid Coleslaw (Thora Birch) and Rebecca Doppelmeyer (Scarlett Johansson) absolutely cannot wait to be free of the prison of school, defiantly flipping the bird and squashing their mortarboards following their graduation. Enid isn’t off the hook just yet: her “diploma” is instead a note informing her that she must “take some stupid art class” (her words) if she hopes to graduate. Their fellow classmates are caricatures of everyone we all knew during our adolescence. Melora (Debra Azar) is inhumanly happy all the time and oblivious to Enid and Rebecca’s sense of ennui and contempt. Todd (T.J. Thyne) is ultra-nervous to talk with the insouciant Rebecca at the punchbowl. Another bespectacled student sits off by himself. Enid and Rebecca are at both an intellectual and emotional crossroads. They want to share an apartment; however, they seem unaware of the amount of money they...
