Rather like the later Radiohead documentary "Meeting People Is Easy," this commissioned video is a statement of loathing by a band towards the insane overexpansion of popularity, venues and scrutiny that followed their unexpected big hit album. Of course, appropriately, "People" expresses that alienation in coolly distanced, aesthetically terms means (even being shot in B&W), whereas "Live!" is the editorial equivalent of Nirvana's most cacophonous audio moments--a yowl of protest in an abrasive mash-up of concert, interview and entertainment-media footage.

The documentary is packaged like a concert film, but the songs are culled from numerous different performanes, often heard just in fragments. Two are heard in performances that reflect the band's exhaustion with their own popularity: We only hear "Smells Like Teen Spirit" in its entirety in a TV version where Cobain ridicules it with a lower-register, lounge-singer vocal (which is not only funny, but makes the lyrics a lot easier to understand) as the other two band members purposely flub miming to a pre-recorded track, while "Come As You Are" he massacres by basically screaming through (not in a good or even funny way).

The video includes lots of footage of them being used as fodder for trivial "Entertainment Tonight"-type coverage, being asked trite questions by interviewers, alternately goofing, being incredibly bored and trying to give sincere answers in response. It's a good companion piece to the documentary "Hype!," as a view of how the "grunge" phenomenon helped, then ultimately backfired against the bands lumped together under that umbrella.

To a point, despite its somewhat bitter tone, this is still a great reflection of how great Nirvana was, and remains. Then in the last 15 minutes or so it goes out of its way to alienate even the viewer by a long final barrage of scenes in which the band onstage expresses its general disgust by destroying instruments and (in Kurt's case) spitting at the camera lenses. This package was conceived by Cobain and finished by the others after his death. Even in its final air of self-destruction and self-loathing, it's a terrific testiment not only to what was brilliant about Nirvana, but what in retrospect looks like their inevitable implosion. They probably would have lasted decades as a moderately popular indie band, but turning into a huge commodity was exactly what they didn't need.

This movie shows the best (before "In Utero" tour) of Nirvana, the crazy stageshows and the best stage- and instrument-destructions, that Nirvana and especially Kurt Cobain were the best in the world at!

The movie has real good speed and the cuts are real good.....and of course this "musicdocumentary" is one of the best, because nirvana is my favourite band!!

The three members of Nirvana are inarguably some of the most creative original talented musicians to emerge in rock since....? But better then that they were a bunch of smart asses with a mission. They specifically choose a a stubbornly butchered rendition of their most popular song to put on their video as a comical trick on those who would look no deeper into the band then it's radio played singles. If this video doesn't capture the spirit of the post punk alternative movement I don't know what does. Small glimpses into the band's opinions and behaviors, self mocking views through the public's sometimes stupid eyes, corporate knocking, apathetic, smart. It's all there. The band takes some of they're most and least popular and throw them together on this 90 min montage of imagery and good music.

An absolute must see for fans of Nirvana and the grunge music scene of the early 90's. This is an extremely well made video documentary and as such has value outside this fan base.

Most of the footage is edited from live performances, studio chat shows and MTV type interviews at around the time their smash hit 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' captured a new generation and stormed to the top of the US Billboard Singles chart, ousting Michael Jackson from #1.

The video is cut in such a way as to emphasise the glossy commercialism associated with their success and the irony the band felt as an 'alternative' rock group promoted to a 'mainstream' audience. The title captures this irony perfectly.

Grunge - a small slice of life, the essence of which is captured here on video. Should not be forgotten. 10/10

Nirvana, my favorite band put this together during the summers of 1991 and 1992. This video shows different songs from various concerts per- formed by the band. The great songs highlight this video. It is one of my favorite musicals, and is highly recommended for fans of the band.

This is the best video I have ever seen period. It does a great job of showing Kurt Cobain and the rest of Nirvana. It shows how they act off screen and not singing plus it shows real good concert videos. If you like Kurt Cobain you also need to rent Kurt and Courtney. This does a great job of showing his life and tragic death and it does shed a lot of light of him being possibly murdered.

This is just an,as already mentioned, awesome Video,because you really get an pretty good impression of what the band nirvana was like.Unfortunately it's not only the best,but at the same time only (released) Nirvana video.The fact that the video is a product of a "Mainstream" and "commercial" label makes it just a bit more admirable. Congratulations on that one!

This video is amazing. Originally conceived by the late Kurt Cobain, this home video shows footage from various concerts of Nirvana's "Nevermind" tour. The venues range from the small heat-exhausted clubs like the one in Dallas where the song "Love Buzz" is presented to sold out stadiums like the one in Brazil. Aside from concert footage, we see a band backstage fooling around and obviously enjoying themselves. We also see montages of people from the media, people in MTV and people of record companies. These were meshed together very well and it clearly shows how the band was being harassed by the media during the "Nevermind" tour. Anyways, this video is brilliant. Look for outstanding performances of "About A Girl," "Dive," "Breed," "Territorial Pissings," "Drain You," "Sliver" and "Endless Nameless."

If like me any Nirvana fan has never got to see them Live before the tragic end then this is the video for you. This video has many of the popular titles performed at various arenas and has loads of backstage with nirvana footage. Its like going on tour with the band its so cool.

Its also particularly funny on the top of the pops performance of smells like teen spirit where they aren't playing and the facial expressions are so funny.

Great for all fans of the band really, or anyone who like grunge.

The period that the film covers was the peak of great Nirvana performances: the middle years when the band was now very musically tight and filled with the excitement of the small social revolution that the early 1990's was bubbling with. They were the most popular band in the world and the performances reflected all the excitement, confusion and passionate fury that came out of being propelled into the mass media.

A few personal highlights are the wonderfully cathartic destruction of "Endless Nameless" and the overwhelming meloncholly of the pumped electric version of "Something in the Way."

If you liked the footage of this film I recommend "The Year Punk Broke" which is a similar documentary of a Sonic Youth tour with a beautiful version of Nirvana (before the disillusionment of fame, etc)opening up for them all across Europe right on the edge of Nirvana's breakthough to the world wide fame. Cobain is giddy and playing better than ever in this footage which is a rare treat to Nirvana fans...the giddiness that is. Plus Sonic Youth is forever fantastic.

Where's the follow-up? This film documents, quite well, only the immediate period following the release of their smash hit "Nevermind" album. It is very nicely done, but it leaves fans thirsty for more in the way of a video release, especially in the advent of the DVD. Something from the In Utero tour? An uncut presentation of the landmark "Unplugged" performance (the bootleg doesn't cut it)? Aside from a very brief snippet of "Rape Me" playing in the background in one part, most of this is from the NEVERMIND record with a few cuts from BLEACH and INCESTICIDE sprinkled around. That was the plan though, I suppose, seeing as it's main objective is to cover the insane over-hype that followed the success of "Smells Like Teen Spirit".

This is a must for Nirvana fans but more is due. Suppose the powers that be want to let an after-the-storm quiet ensue, though, so that the marketing machine can go full-throttle again when the post-grunge backlash fades away, and Nirvana is once again a profitable iconic entity. yay.

This video is a must-see and must-own for anyone who is a Nirvana fan! This video tells about the evolution of a phenominal grunge-alternative band called that is called Nirvana.

It tells about their concerts, the lives of the late, great Kurt Cobain and his bandmates, plays all their songs on their albums, and their interviews on MTV, and other news people as well.

Nirvana is may as well be the rock group for the 90's. So, please if you are a Nirvana fan or want to be one, or into anything that's grunge, this is the video to see!

Live! Tonight! Sold Out! is a wonderful video. Nirvana happens to be my favorite band, so I was eager to pick up this video when it was released a few years ago. The film beautifully captures the spirit of one of the most influential bands of all-time. Some of the band's greatest hits, including "Smells Like Teen Spirit", "Lithium", and "Come as You Are" are captured on film over the span of several different concerts. The secret track from their Nevermind album, "Endless Nameless" is even shown here, a rare treat. The film also contains many hilarious incidents that rock bands are always sure to encounter. A great buy for any fan of this great band.

I first got this video at blockbuster two years ago. It has Nirvana playing live and hanging out, its real cool. If you listen to Smells Like Teen Spirit it has different lyrics. Its a real find to be able to see them in concert on your TV its the closest you can get to the real thing.
