A very fair two-reel feature

"The modern prodigal" is apt to come back rich and pay off the mortgage on the old home. In this case, the home has been auctioned away, and the youth buys it back and saves his white-haired mother from scrubbing the floors at the "home." Yet, though this is sentimental enough, the way its story is built up and acted makes it a very fair two-reel feature offering. Mrs. Maurice plays the old lady and gives a fine picture of a mother's solicitude for her wayward and wandering son. The stern father is as well played by Van Dyke Brooke, while James Morrison, in the role of the son, is also pleasing. Straightforward Melodrama Redeemed By Mary Maurice and Jean

Banker Van Dyke Brooke orders profligate son James Morrison from the house. This saddens Brooke's wife Mary Maurice, and Jean the Vitagraph dog, but it actually seems to have the desired effect. Morrison writes mama that he is going to make good and will write when he does. Before he can deliver, however, a run on his bank gives Brooke a heart attack and he dies. Everything is sold off, and Miss Maurice is sent to the poor house, where they allow Jean to stay.

It's a straightforward little melodrama, and Jean, of course, will play a vital role. In fact, Miss Maurice and Jean are the only reason to watch this. Brooke is all right, Morrison is a plot device, but these two fine actresses are excellent.
