Part of a series of later-1980s and early-1990s properties in which a R-rated film was turned into a more kid-friendly media franchise with an animated adaptation and accompanying toy line. Other examples include Rambo II: A Missão (1985) and O Exterminador do Futuro 2: O Julgamento Final (1991). Later installments of the RoboCop series embraced the wider audience with the third film and reboot going with the more accessible PG-13 rating, and the live action television series being very family friendly, whereas the original RoboCop movie is very gory and violent.
Originally ordered with thirteen episodes, the series was shortened to twelve and the funds for the thirteenth episode went into producing Pryde of the X-Men (1989). Marvel Productions CEO Margaret Loesch was confident an X-Men series would do well and produced Pryde as a proposed pilot. However, it wouldn't be until Loesch became the president of Fox Children's Network Inc. that she finally got her X-Men (1992) series (and was proven right when it became a hit).
The animated series was produced by Marvel Productions, the predecessor of the current Marvel Animation, a division of Marvel Studios and subsidiary of Walt Disney Studios. Orion Pictures which owned the franchise to RoboCop before was purchased by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) and later to Amazon. Ironically Amazon MGM Studios would keep the rights of the RoboCop films and television series. That makes this animated series possibly the only RoboCop cartoon now owned by Disney.
