In almost all versions of the Transformers franchise, Optimus Prime is the wise, sage leader of the Autobots. That wasn't quite the case in one continuity, and this divergent take on the character is receiving a truly "animated" new figure by way of Flame Toys.
Furai Model Animated Optimus Prime & Wingblade Animated Optimus Prime are two new action figures based on Optimus Prime's appearance in the 2007 cartoon Transformers: Animated. Coming in two variants, the winged incarnation recreates his epic form seen in the show's final episode. Set to release nearly 20 years after the debut of Transformers: Animated, this epic and articulated take on Optimus Prime has an ax to grind in all Decepticons.

Superheroes thrive in animation. The medium is uniquely positioned to capture the visual possibilities and sheer imagination of comic books without having to compromise anything. It's the reason the highest-rated superhero show of all time on IMDb is a cartoon. As we have seen time and time again, from the masterpiece that is "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" to the gripping drama of "X-Men '97," animation can serve these stories in a way that live-action can't.
Still, that doesn't mean every effort is a home run. For every "Batman: The Animated Series," there's a "Batman Unlimited." While the '90s saw plenty of masterful cartoons based on superheroes, even Marvel ones with "X-Men: The Animated Series" and "Spider-Man," there was still something missing — The Avengers. So, in the late '90s, Fox Kids decided to fix this grave mistake and create an Avengers cartoon. Before the show could get greenlit, however,...

Some characters in the Transformers franchise are somewhat known for switching factions, starting off on one side of the conflict before ending up on another. Likewise, other characters' allegiances change depending on the continuity. Such is the case with one poetic Predacon, who's now returning via the franchise's latest toyline.
Sky-Byte was debuted in a forgotten Transformers anime, and since then, he's been a somewhat recurring character in the franchise. Though his characterizations have differed over the years, his design has remained consistent, namely among other Transformers. Now, the character is back in the franchise's latest toyline, putting the anime character back into the spotlight after over two decades.

Quick Links Hot Shot Debuted In a Forgotten Transformers Anime Hot Shot Was the Face of the Unicron Trilogy Why a New Transformers Anime Must Bring Back Hot Shot
The Transformers franchise has increasingly used a shrinking list of the same characters, with each new series more or less retreading the same Autobots and Decepticons. Chief among these numbers are Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Megatron and Starscream, with the yellow Autobot Bumblebee becoming something of a mascot for the brand. This wasn't always the case, however, and Bumblebee's place in the franchise was briefly taken by a now-forgotten character.
Hot Shot was prominent in the Unicron Trilogy Transformers anime, and was more of a stand-in for Bumblebee than many fans realize. The time has come to bring Hot Shot back into prominence, especially with Bumblebee being used so much. With a new Transformers anime on the way, this could very well...

Beast Machines: Transformers remains the most controversial show in the franchise's history. The characters and the themes proved contentious among fans, especially compared to Beast Wars: Transformers. Since then, Beast Machines and its cast are rarely mentioned, with even Transformers: Legacy not homaging it.
The Transformers franchise has had fans ever since 1984, with many of those initial fans going on to enjoy subsequent generations and continuities of the property. At the same time, there have been some series that were more contentious than others, with the so-called "Beast Era" being the perfect example of this. Though Beast Wars: Transformers ended up becoming a fan-favorite, that wasn't the case with its sequel show.
Beast Machines: Transformers had several issues, and it was the perfect storm that caused it to become perhaps the most controversial Transformers TV series. Since then, the concepts and characters introduced in its story have been almost entirely overlooked,...

Throughout the many Transformers cartoons and continuities, numerous fan-favorite robots in disguise have been introduced. In many cases, these characters mostly occupy the screen because they happened to have toys on the shelves at that time. Despite these commercial endeavors, however, the franchise has also had numerous well-written story arcs and examples of character development.
Examples of thoughtful character development were featured in various Transformers shows, with some characters getting more growth than others. These included heroes and villains alike, with the lines sometimes being blurred between the two. From the growth of a young Maximal to the heroic death of an otherwise evil Decepticon, Transformers has been home to exciting character arcs that paid off across multiple episodes.

A Takara Tomy mecha anime franchise about transforming trains is getting a new season -- and it's not Transformers.
Beginning in 2015 with the release of the Shinkansen Henkei Robo Shinkalion toy line, the Shinkalion series is set to continue with the newest entry, Shinkalion Change the World. This will be the third such entry in the series, which focuses on giant transforming robots called Shinkalions. Able to turn into "shinkansen" bullet trains, the Shinkalions are utilized to investigate mysterious events and take on monstrous opponents.

When it comes to the Transformers franchise, countless robots in disguise have taken on the most coveted alternate form of all: icon status. Nevertheless, there are others that lack this acclaim, instead veering to the opposite extreme. Said Cybertronians are seen as both the worst parts of their respective cartoons or movies.
The reasons for why these characters are frowned upon range from intentionally being portrayed as unlikable to unflattering designs and poor writing. Some of them added to the issues present in already criticized continuities, while others brought down otherwise well-received entries. Worst of all, two Autobots in particular were the offensive faces of what may be the property's worst movie ever.

The following contains spoilers for Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, in theaters now.
Transformers: Rise of the Beasts juggles a large cast, with the Autobots being joined by both the bestial Maximals and the villainous Terrorcons. Due to this huge amount of characters and the movie's somewhat short runtime, there are quite a few Transformers that don't quite get their deserved spotlight. This is especially the case for two iconic characters, neither of whom show off their usual levels of genius.
Wheeljack and Rhinox are usually some of the smartest Transformers within their respective factions, even if other parts of their characterizations might go against this. Sadly, none of their trademark intellect and ingenuity is on display in the Rise of the Beasts film, which essentially makes both of them into glorified cameos. Here's how Rise of the Beasts missed an opportunity to capitalize on Wheeljack's and Rhinox's brain power.
