This Soviet adaptation of the Shakespeare play is reasonably faithful to the source material, a love story full of misunderstanding and witty banter. There's no changing the time period or any other major contextual variation, it plays out as standard costume drama. This is probably one of the better Shakespeare comedies, with a light, romantic tone that suits the screen well. That said, this version is probably not as entertaining as other, more recent versions.
For someone looking for a typical Shakespeare adaptation, along the lines of Zefferelli's Romeo and Juliet, then this is worth a look, but others might see this is a bit 'by the numbers'.
