When the ranger closes the park for the winter, he informs the bear there will be no more hand outs of cake and, presumably pic-a-nic baskets. There are plenty of grubs and worms in the woods. The bears look distraught, but toddle off. Except for Fatso, who tries to steal eggs from the ranger's hen coop. But the eggs are guarded by a diligent cockerel....

It's directed by Jack Hannah, who had been one of Walt Disney's directors. However, Walter Lantz sometimes called himself the other Walt, and sometimes described himself as the man who hired people who were tired of dealing with Disney. This one looks a lot like Hannah's work for Disney on Humphrey the Bear.

A Disneyesque Walter Lantz cartoon

This cartoon reminds me a lot of the Humphrey Bear cartoons from Disney, Fatso even looks a lot like Humphrey, the scene with the best animation is the scene where Fatso disguises himself as a hen and flirts with the rooster so he can knock him out and try to steal the eggs.

Rival animators Hanna Barbera had just premiered the new Yogi Bear cartoon series earlier the same year (1961) this short was released. There are some similarities (peach stone vs. jelly stone, a ranger character) but this episode uses many sight gags commonly seen in WB offerings: a drag dressing character, Avery-esque reactions, etc).
