Pure Treasure!

This cute little animated (stop-motion) short was a Special Feature on "Son of Paleface" DVD. It was once thought to be LOST. Mark Kausler, animator and film collector, spliced together color footage with stray pieces of black-and-white "dupe" footage to approximate the film's original 7 min, 41 sec continuity. It is presented as a DAFFY DITTY. As a cartoon lover, this was a real treat for my eyes and hopefully yours.

Charming lost jewel of stop-motion

A Cantinflan-esquire hero named 'Pepito' woos a Latina beauty, but learns that one must be careful what they ask for, since they just might receive it! I saw a rough print (sadly, all that survives) thanks to historian Jerry Beck's Cartoon Brew. I'm stunned at the quality of this delightful stop motion short (made using replacement figures; IE: a separate figure or limb for each frame of movement) which gives the animation a rubbery quality that's absent from techniques which use jointed figures. Scored by Disney composer Paul Smith, miniature sets designed by Bernyce Polifk (whose minimalist designs grace many later WB cartoons) figure work was carried out by veterans of Disney and George Pal's Puppetoons, I can't recommend this film highly enough.

A Man Chases A Woman Until She Catches Him

Here's an example of the byways that Frank Tashlin took in his journey from cartoons to live-action comedies. Set to the title song, it concerns a Mexican fellow who pursues a young lady, who says 'no' when he tries to get close to her, and then no again when he tries to leave.

Clearly modeled on George Pal's Puppetoons, this stop-motion animation is one of three or four Tashlin did in this period, before he, like Pal, moved into live features. Filled with funny stereotypes of the era (again, like Pal), it is quite funny if you accept those stereotypes of the era, although modern audiences may be offended.
