'Goldilox and the Three Hoods' (1975)
Opening thoughts: Actually really liked the premise, fairytale stories being spoofed is not unfamiliar territory in animation and 'Goldilocks and the Three Bears' is one of the most spoofed/parodied, but it is a type of cartoon that also has been done well many times. The execution however was not too great and in fact nothing special really. 'Goldilox and the Three Hoods' is not terrible, with it being one of the better Dogfather cartoons actually on the whole, but it's not particularly good either.
Good things; There are good things certainly. One character makes an impression and that is Dogfather, he has some amusing lines that did raise a smile. Bob Holt's very Marlon Brando/Peter Falk's Columbo impression voice work adds a good deal. Actually thought the voice acting was fine considering the material.
Did also find the climax quite amusing and it is the most amusing 'Goldilox and the Three Hoods' gets. The twist on Goldilox was quite clever. There are some nice colours here and there and the music fits pleasantly. The main theme is catchy.
Bad things: None of the other characters make much of an impression. Pug has very little to do and is reduced to tired physical comedy that only really comes towards the end in a scene that is similar to many gags in other Dogfather cartoons. Goldilox doesn't have much personality and the conflict lacks tension and is underused. The rest of the characters are annoying, especially the nephew. The animation is on the whole flat and sparse.
Moreover, the story has no surprises and does very little new with a story and concept that has been done to death already and a lot better. There is not much energy either, with the cartoon taking too long to get going really. The gags are too few and are very stale and recycled-feeling, only the ending amuses and even that has no originality. For such a title, it feels too tame and like almost all the Dogfather cartoons the overuse of over-complicated terminology in the dialogue makes one question the target audience.
Concluding thoughts: Overall, pretty average and nothing special.
5/10.
