Laura "LV" Hoff is a reclusive, shy young woman whom lives with her horrible, snobbish and loud-mouthed mother Mari in Scarsborough, Yorkshire. LV has fallen into depression following the death of her father and she spends most of the time locked away her in her bedroom listening to her father's music records which irritates Mari. Mari begins dating and falls for the aging, womanizing Cockney talent agent Ray Say whom is struggling to find the perfect act for local nightclub owner Mr. Boo. Ray is moved and impressed when he overhears LV impersonating Gracie Field, Judy Garland and Shirley Bassey and sings their songs and believing LV is gifted and talented, Ray arranges to have LV perform at Mr. Boo's nightclub which doesn't go too well. After talking to LV and suggesting that she do perform as a tribute to her father, and LV agrees on the condition that it's a one-off performance. LV puts another performance and becomes a massive overnight success. After the show LV collapses and exhausted, a friendly telephone engineer named Billy whom befriends LV becomes concerned and tries to encourage LV to stand up to Mari and Ray. But, it all goes crashing down as Ray breaks the deal with LV to do only one performance and wants her to perform again at the nightclub and LV refuses and LV's refusal causes both Mari and LV to lose patience with her and LV's refusal to perform again threatens Ray's career and Mari's life.

George explained to Billy that if a customer was attractive or maybe available he used a tactic of calling later to explain the instruction papers. When he heard later that Billy had already called with the papers he assumed Billy was after the attention of the Mother, as he was. Then he called Billy ' A devious b*****d'.

It's not mentioned or confirmed, it's possible LV could have Asperger's Syndrome. LV is a recluse and is obviously suffering from depression and has extreme social phobia and chronic depression due to the death of her father and possible PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). However, this is mere speculation and it's really up to the viewers to decide if LV has autism or a mental disorder.

Little Voice is an award winning 1998 British comedy drama from director Mark Herman and is based on the play "The Rise and Fall of Little Voice" by Jim Cartwright.

Ray Say is a talent agent whom is small time and he believes LV is his shot at becoming successful and that she is his last chance for a better life.

It's true. Mark Herman created the character for the movie and he had written the part for Ewan McGregor.
