Shane Black's Parker Movie Could Finally Give Us The Best Version With A Surprising Lead
Image
If Shane Black has done his job as a writer and director, the legendary screenwriter who gave us "Lethal Weapon," "The Last Boy Scout," and "The Long Kiss Goodnight" (three of the greatest Hollywood action films made during the genre's blow-the-doors-off heyday) will launch a singular crime franchise with his new movie "Play Dirty." Black's film is based on the character of Parker, an unrepentant thief-killer created by Donald E. Westlake under the nom de plume of Richard Stark. The last name of the latter author says it all; unlike the criminal mischief depicted in many of Westlake's books, Stark's Parker is a man of few words and zero remorse.

The 3 Actors Who Almost Played Paul Walker's Fast And Furious Role
Image
It doesn't take a very astute cinéaste to see that Rob Cohen's 2001 car chase flick, "The Fast and the Furious," is an open lift of Kathryn Bigelow's 1991 heist movie "Point Break." Both films are about a sexy young FBI agent -- Paul Walker in "Fast" and Keanu Reeves in "Break" -- tasked with infiltrating a specialized gang of ultra-cool heisters equipped with a unique form of transport. In "Fast," the gang is made of high-octane street racers who love their cars as much as their families. In "Break," the gang is made up of laid-back surfers. Both gangs are headed by resolute and charismatic leaders who see their heisting habits as both noble and punk rock. In "Fast," it's Vin Diesel. In "Break," it's Patrick Swayze. The comparisons are myriad.

The first "Fast" film was a mere mid-budget thriller made for only $38 million, but it was a massive...

‘90s Movie Legend, 63, Reveals How He Landed His Role in Denzel Washington 86% Rotten Tomatoes Thriller
Image
After breaking out as a star thanks to his iconic turn as Ritchie Valens in the biopic La Bamba, Lou Diamond Phillips was everywhere. He joined forces with Edward James Olmos for the acclaimed Stand and Deliver, was part of a stacked ensemble with Brat Pack member Emilio Estevez for Young Guns, and would even go on to earn acclaim on-stage with a Broadway adaptation of The King and I. Among his most memorable performances, though, was his appearance in the 1996 war thriller Courage Under Fire, starring the legendary Denzel Washington as an army officer responsible for a deadly case of friendly fire. However, despite having earned Golden Globe and Tony nominations, he wasn't originally a shoo-in for the role of Staff Sergeant John Monfriez.

Over the weekend, Phillips took part in a panel with his old Young Guns co-star Kiefer Sutherland at FanX's Atlanta Comic Convention, where he shared...

Everything Coming to Hulu and Disney+ in June
Image
While the Max rebrand back to HBO Max has the streaming world in a tizzy, it’s worth remembering the significance of keeping diverse subscriptions. While “Hacks” and “The Last of Us” wrap up over on that side of your library, the Hulu and Disney bundle is essential for maximizing this summer’s offerings.

Disney+ continues to be the go-to streamer for family friendly viewing options; this month, they’ll add the official “Frozen” Broadway musical to that library, along with Marvel’s “Ironheart,” about Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne) who was introduced in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.”

Hulu has everything you need for an “Alien” movie marathon, all to gear up for FX’s “Alien: Earth” which premieres in August. You could also do a “Mamma Mia!” marathon or “Bachelor” binge — we’re not here to judge.

Top Pick: “The Bear” Season 4 (Available on Hulu)

Mark Wahlberg's 'The Big Hit' Was a Failure With Roger Ebert
Image
Quick LinksMark Wahlberg Leads a Team of Assassins in 'The Big Hit''The Big Hit' Mixes Action and Comedy'The Big Hit' Came a Little Too Late

A lot can be learned through Roger Ebert’s reviews. Some even consider his four-star system to be a cinematic bible of sorts. That could very well be the truth, considering the man is the first film critic to win a Pulitzer Prize award and has examined over 10,000 films in his professional career, whether they were downright abysmal or perfect. While he tried his best to stray away from “terrible” movies, there were plenty more out there that he let float just above the waters of the theatrical abyss with a score of one.

You would never possibly imagine then that just after Mark Wahlberg’s perfectly scored Boogie Nights from 1997, the same actor would turn around the following year and be in a film...

Love Hurts Review: Good-Enough Action Barely Propels This Unfunny But Affable Fight Comedy
Image
This author is old enough to remember a very particular period of cinema history that Jonathan Eusebio's new crime-comedy/not-quite-a-romance "Love Hurts" appears to be aping. In the wake of Quentin Tarantino's "Pulp Fiction," way back in 1994, numerous movies began to appear to feature flippant, violent characters, their mouths full of pop culture references, usually becoming embroiled with byzantine organized crime plots, brutal assassinations, or other acts of bone-crunching mayhem. These films ratcheted up the bloodshed, but kept characters whimsical. The genre's stars were too cool to be terrified by gun battles, and would murder with impunity, only to return to a conversation about movies, fast food, or some sort of personal quirk. Quirkiness was the guiding ethos of the era.

Some were comedic, others downbeat, but all belonged to the Post-Pulp era. "Goodbye Lover," "Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels," "2 Days in the Valley," "Truth or Consequences, Nm,...

‘Werewolves’ Review
Image
Stars: Frank Grillo, Ilfenesh Hadera, Kamdynn Gary, Lou Diamond Phillips, Katrina Law, James Michael Cummings | Written by Matthew Kennedy | Directed by Steven C. Miller

Werewolves, originally titled Year 2, begins a year after a supermoon turned everyone who was exposed to it into a werewolf. For those who aren’t familiar with the term, a supermoon is a full moon that occurs when the moon is at the closest point to Earth, they have a dramatic effect on things like tides, but this one goes further than that. It unlocks mankind’s latent werewolf gene, causing unimaginable chaos and death. And now it’s about to happen again.

When we first meet Wesley Marshal he’s busy setting up defences at the home of his sister-in-law Lucy and her young daughter, Emma. They need the help because Wesley’s brother was a firefighter, killed in the line of duty during the first transformation.

This Forgotten Mark Wahlberg Action Movie Feels Like A Prequel To The Departed
Image
A forgotten Mark Wahlberg cop movie from the 1990s feels like an origin story for his character in The Departed. While Mark Wahlberg action movies might be ten a penny now, back when he was making the transition from rapper to actor, he was more eclectic in his choices. He followed Boogie Nights with projects like Three Kings while mixing in bigger budget fare like The Perfect Storm. He made his action debut in 1998's The Big Hit, a bizarre mixture of wacky comedy and Hong Kong-style action flick.

In the following years, the genre would yield some of Wahlberg's biggest hits, including the Transformers sequels or 2007's Shooter. That said, arguably Wahlberg's best performance was playing Sergeant Dignam in The Departed. This was very much a supporting role for the star, with the story involving Leonardo DiCaprio's cop Costigan going undercover in the Irish mob, while Matt Damon...

The Actor Behind Star Wars' Darth Maul Almost Played An Unlikely Marvel Superhero
Image
Scottish actor and marital artist Ray Park began his film career as a stunt double for actors Robin Shou and James Remar in the 1997 video game adaptation "Mortal Kombat: Annihilation." He played some other characters too, although only in a background capacity; his face could not be seen. 1999 saw Park's career explode, however, as he played the demonic Darth Maul in George Lucas' supra-blockbuster "Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace." At the time, critics were mixed on "The Phantom Menace," but many "Star Wars" fanboys agreed that Darth Maul was really, really cool. He didn't speak much — and when he did, he was voiced by Peter Serafinowicz — but his double-sided lightsaber, black cloak, stoic demeanor, and striking facial markings made Maul one of the most memorable parts of an otherwise forgettable film.

Later in 1999, Park also served as the body/fight double for the Headless Horseman in Tim Burton's "Sleepy Hollow,...

Mark Herman in Escândalos no Hotel (1992)
The Marching Band - Richard Mowe - 19089
Mark Herman in Escândalos no Hotel (1992)
Inevitably it’s going to be compared to Mark Herman’s Brassed Off, the British comedy-drama about colliery bands, but this French contribution to what could become a “genre” if there’s any more of them, has a beating emotional pulse all of its own.

To be sure it’s feel-good and sentimental but none the worse for any of that. Emmanuel Courcol on his third directorial outing after Ceasefire (Cessez-le-feu) in 2016 and The Big Hit (Un triomphe) in 2020 treads the tightrope between tearjerker, social upheaval, and family dynamics with skilful aplomb.

The focus here is on the relationship between two brothers - Thibaut (Benjamin Lavernhe) and Jimmy (Pierre Lottin) who share a love of music. At the start of the film they are unaware of each other’s existence because they have grown up separately having been adopted by different families.

They seem to be worlds apart. Thibaut is a rather solitary internationally renowned.

The Wages of Fear (2024) Movie on Netflix: And Film Classics Get Updated Too
Image
The Wages of Fear is a French film directed by Julien Leclercq starring Franck Gastambide and Ana Girardot.

“The Wages of Fear” is a film based on Georges Arnaud’s novel, which, as you may already know, had a previous adaptation in 1953, directed by H.G. Clouzot. This has become a classic of French cinema and one of the best thrillers in film history.

In these current times, Julien Leclercq dares to create a new version of this story, modernizing it entirely and trying to maintain the character tension in this updated plot, although we’re not fully sure if it’s for the better.

It’s always a risk to compare yourself to a classic, but Julien Leclercq has the courage to try it.

Plot

To save a village during an oil extraction, four people must escort a convoy loaded with nitroglycerin in a desolate place, surrounded by armed gangs.

Playtime Launches Sales On Emmanuel Courcol’s ‘The Marching Band’ – Unifrance Rendez-Vous In Paris
Image
Playtime will launch sales on Emmanuel Courcol’s new social comedy The Marching Band, about two brothers separated by fate and reunited by music, at the upcoming Unifrance Rendez-vous in Paris next week.

The €6.5M production, which is currently in post-production, is actor-director-screenwriter Courcol’s third theatrical feature after Ceasefire and The Big Hit.

Benjamin Lavernhe, seen recently in Maïwenn’s Jeanne du Barry, stars as successful orchestra conductor Thibaut Désormeaux, who is hoping his sister is a compatible bone marrow donor to treat a rapidly progressing leukaemia.

His DNA results reveal instead that he is adopted. On confronting his mother, he discovers he has a younger brother, played by Pierre Lottin, who was raised in more modest conditions and is now a factory worker.

This brother shares his musical talent and is a member of the local marching band. Thibault decides to nurture this gift and help his brother...

Why John Woo Took a 20-Year Break From Hollywood

John Woo couldn’t miss.

The godfather of gun fu, who helmed a number of balletic, bullet-riddled Chinese actions hits — A Better Tomorrow, The Killer, and Hard Boiled among them — before taking his talents to the States, was coming off four consecutive Hollywood smashes. HBO Max New Releases: March 2023
Image
There’s nothing quite like when HBO is airing one of its trademark watercooler-worthy dramas weekly. Thankfully, we’ll get to it experience exactly that and more on HBO Max in March 2023.

The big ticket item on HBO Max this March is undoubtedly Succession Season 4 on March 26. Part prestige drama and part screwball comedy, Succession is about as fun a watch as they come. Season 4 of the series about egregious wealth will find the Roy siblings reeling after trying and failing to take down their father, Logan (Brian Cox).

HBO Max’s other major TV option this month is another weekly release from HBO. Matthew Rhys returns as the titular lawyer in Perry Mason Season 2 on March 6. Season 1 of this period piece reboot flexed the classic TV character’s detective skills. From the look of the trailer, it seems as though this is the year Perry makes his name in the court room.

Featuring the best of French language cinema from France and beyond, we've selected some of festival highlights to look out for. For full details of where and when you can see each film, visit the official site.

Robust (Robuste)

Belgian filmmaker Constance Meyer makes an assured debut with this gentle consideration of human connection that is powered by the luminous performances from Gérard Depardieu and up-and-coming French star Déborah Lukumuena. Depardieu has fun playing an actor who has among his traits some that are not so very far removed from the actor himself. Lukumena is Aïssa, who is assigned to provide him with security detail, whether he wants it or not. This sort of odd-couple comedy could easily...

Angela Bassett, Michelle Yeoh, Carla Gugino, Lena Headey, and Karen Gillan in Coquetel Explosivo (2021)
‘Gunpowder Milkshake’ Trailer Is as Adorable and Violent as the Title (Video)
Angela Bassett, Michelle Yeoh, Carla Gugino, Lena Headey, and Karen Gillan in Coquetel Explosivo (2021)
When you give your movie a name like “Gunpowder Milkshake,” you are making a very specific promise to potential audiences: This thing is going to be violent as hell and somehow hilariously adorable too. I have no idea if the actual movie will deliver but I’m pleased to report that the official trailer definitely does.

Per the official logline, in the film “a secret sisterhood of female assassins, over the course of a single night, fight to stop a cycle of violence while coming to the aid of a mother-daughter assassin duo.” Karen Gillan stars as Sam, the daughter part of that duo and the newest member of that sisterhood, with Lena Headey playing her mom.

And based on this delightful trailer, we’re guessing the plot kicks off when Sam decides not to kill her latest target, a young girl. Jokes and a ton of brutal violence ensues.

Cannes Film Festival Pushed to July 2021
Image
Organizers of the Cannes Film Festival confirm the 2021 festival has been postponed and will now take place July 6-17. Originally the event was set to unfold on the French Riviera May 11-22. In the meantime, the Cannes Lions advertising market is still scheduled for June 21-25. The new Cannes dates for July overlap with dates previously set by Karlovy Vary 2021.

In addition to pandemic considerations, Variety reported earlier this month that one benefit of holding the festival later is the large number of strong films in the pipeline. Hotel owners, influential in the seaside tourism hotspot, would normally object to a summertime festival. But tourism has been hard-hit thanks to the pandemic and cancelation of festivals and trade shows that bring in money.

Mass Covid vaccinations kicked off in the U.S. and Europe last month and the rollout has been slow. With 3 million cases — the highest number in the...

It could never have been possible outside of this continent and I’m super proud to be awarded in this continent.”

In Cannes, a Bittersweet Mini-Festival Salutes the Past and Sets Out a Hopeful New Vision
Image
As the lights dimmed in the Grand Theatre Lumiere in Cannes on Tuesday evening, and the opening notes to Camille Saint-Saëns’ “The Carnival of Animals” echoed over the loudspeakers, one could almost imagine themselves back in the normal swing of things.

In some respects, the opening night of the three-day ‘Special Cannes’ program felt very much like a return to halcyon days. Announced in late September, the mini-festival is intended to honor the Cannes 2020 selection with a showcase of four films that received the prestigious label, as well as the full Cinefondation lineup and a short film competition.

At Tuesday’s opening screening of Emmanuel Courcol’s crowd-pleasing comedy drama “The Big Hit,” the security measures were more elaborate than ever; the state-of-the-art auditorium was at full capacity; and the screening was prefaced by a typically effusive introduction from Cannes delegate general Thierry Fremaux, among others.

Only, the 1,000 attendees weren...
