This is the final "film" Eric Morecambe made before he died in 1984. Like Ernie, he was reportedly very unhappy with the finished result, as they had originally been led to believe they were going to make an actual feature film, wiith Euston Films (Thames Television's in-house filmed drama wing) and not, as it turned out, a videotaped, studio based, TV comedy-drama. It had been the opportunity to make another film that had been a major deciding factor for the duo to leave the BBC and go to Thames/ITV.
The final sequence of this film has Eric and Ernie walking off together which makes it their final screen image together.
The fictitious murder mystery novel read by Ernie is called "Passport to Death".
Night Train to Murder was part of the "deal" that took Eric Morecambe and Ernie Wise from the BBC to Thames Television on the ITV network, in 1978. The BBC did not produce feature films and could not match the offer, whereas Thames TV had a filmed drama production wing called Euston Films which made The Sweeney and Minder, amongst others and had produced the two film versions of "The Sweeney" ("Sweeney!" and "Sweeney 2"). In the end, though it was shot mostly in Thames Television's Teddington Lock studios, on videotape.
Made by Thames Television and received it's debut on the ITV network during Christmas 1984.
