Mi Puerto Rico

How does this great documentary of our history get pushed to the side with virtually none existent?It's the best history watching anyone could view.Our folks need to know all of this.Many of us do not know the history of Puetorican struggles.Maybe by making this public to everyone our struggle would be different today.I really loved the sequence of narration.The graphics were splendid.No nonsense information.I have viewed this documentary with many family and friends and watched there reaction to see all kinds of great expressions,surprised,angry,sad,happy what more can one ask of media?An academy award piece.

Mi Puerto Rico is an excellent, comprehensive documentary that is simultaneously a personal journey and an education in Puerto Rican history. The narrator, Raquel Ortiz, is a Puerto Rican woman who grew up in the South Bronx and who did not visit the Island until she was 12 years old. Her film details her own feelings about Puerto Rican history and identity in between chronological historical segments.

Part of what makes the film so successful is Ms. Ortiz's presence. She is an excellent narrator and interviewer, as evidenced through her conversations/interviews with a variety of Puerto Ricans, including a cultural historian, the granddaughter of Luis Munoz Marin, and former sugar cane factory workers. (This film may be worth the viewing if only to see Geraldo Rivera discuss his former position as the Young Lords' lawyer!) These and other people in the film tackle the complex issue of Puerto Rico's status vis-a-vis the US, and ultimately indicate that, although there are many opinions about whether Puerto Rico should be independent or not, preserving Puerto Rican culture and heritage is important to all Puerto Ricans.

Mi Puerto Rico is a heartfelt, effective film that would do well in a classroom setting. It provides an excellent overview of Puerto Rican-US history while maintaining a personal documentary feeling.
