RAF pilot Hugh Fleming is dashing, wealthy and successful at everything he turns his hand to, whether it is sports, flying or women. He is engaged to Bunty and is the top marksmen in his flying corps, but one fateful day during the Battle of Britain he is shot down by a enemy plane and suffers extensive burns. As he battles for life, he drifts back to memories in his past, little knowing that life will never be the same again for him.

As Hugh begins to recover, he learns from flying colleague Julian Masters that one of his RAF comrades is missing, presumed dead. Hugh is anxious to find out the extent of his burns, but soon discovers how bad they are when fiancee Bunty turns up unexpectedly for a visit and runs out of the hospital. Dejected, he makes a phone call to girlfriend Jean, a farm girl who he had a dalliance with a few weeks before the crash. She is eager to see him, but his actions lead to unexpected tragedy.

Hugh is now well enough to be transferred to Dr Meikle's Burns Clinic for surgery and recovery, where he is reunited in the ward with his old flying squadron boss Tim Holland, who has also suffered burns during the war. Another face he recognizes is the physiotherapist assigned to treat his hands, Marjorie, who he seduced then deserted while at university. He attempts to rekindle the relationship, but Marjorie rejects his advances. Now able to go home for a visit, he discovers that people now treat him differently. But the biggest shock is yet to come when Julian drops a bombshell revelation that sends Hugh over the edge.

Dr Meikle is worried about Hugh's mental state after his near drowning, as Hugh struggles to cope with the fact that he is no longer the golden boy he once was. Things look up when he is invited to speak at his old school, while old flame Loretta Stone secures him a job as a film adviser for her latest wartime film. But both events prove crushingly disappointing, and the final low is when he receives a wedding invitation from her former fiancee Bunty for her upcoming nuptials.

As Hugh begins to make real progress in his physiotherapy with his hands, the relationship between him and Marjorie begins to thaw. Hugh is eager to be put to some use, but after taking on an advertising job his mother has arranged for him, he realizes that not only are they uninterested in what he has to offer, but that everyday life holds no meaning for him. The only thing that gave him purpose was flying in the RAF, so he decides to reapply to fight in the war. Marjorie is horrified, but the reality of it all is brought home when Hugh meets up with old colleague Julian, who informs him that he and Hugh are the only remaining original members of their squadron. It is then that Julian asks a favour of him.

Hugh is determined to reapply for the RAF, but neither Dr Meikle or Marjorie think he should do so, for different reasons. Marjorie fears he will be killed if he flies again, and her views seem vindicated when Hugh hears bad news at the air base. But the tragedy also reunites him with former fiancee Bunty when he has to visit her home, leaving him feeling conflicted and Marjorie confused. Just who will Hugh choose to spend his life with?
