Robert Downey Jr.'s 31-Year-Old Fantasy Box Office Bomb Is Better Than You Remember
Image
Every single year since the dawn of cinema has had its fair share of instant classics. From the very beginning in the 1910s to modern-day 21st-century releases. The technological revolution has enabled filmmakers to tell the stories that they've always dreamed of telling, and the results are beautiful. During Hollywood's early years, there were around 2,000 movies produced a year, which is already an impossible total for any one person to keep up with. Studies show that as of 2024, an average of 10,000 films are produced each year from a wide variety of countries, studios, and filmmakers. The output has increased year after year and seemingly will continue to slowly rise with time.

Due to the constant hit parade of film releases, it is inevitable that some classics are going to be swept under the rug and forgotten. One of these forgotten gems came from Universal Pictures in 1993. Heart and Souls is...

Experts slugfest mailbag: ‘Conclave,’ ‘Emilia Pérez’ backlash, and who’s this year’s Cillian Murphy?
Image
Is “Conclave” a Best Picture sleeper? Will “Emilia Pérez” endure backlash? Gold Derby editors and experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to answer your burning questions of the week.

“Conclave” has been a modest hit since opening in theaters last weekend. The gossipy papal drama has been sitting in third place in the Best Picture Oscar odds, but could it build enough consensus to actually win on a preferential ballot? Its strength could also pull in Isabella Rossellini, its sole supporting actress hopeful who remains in sixth place but continues to produce audience applause with her big scene in the film. Is her lack of screen time muddling people’s predictions?

See Experts slugfest mailbag: Ridley Scott, predicting the big Oscar snubs, and Kelly Clarkson as host?

Meanwhile, “Emilia Pérez” opens in limited theaters this weekend before arriving on Netflix on Nov. 13. While the cartel musical has its lots of fans,...

Kyra Sedgwick's 10 Best Movies And TV Shows
Image
Kyra Sedgwick made her professional acting debut on screen in 1982 when she earned a role in the daytime soap opera Another World. Three years later, she made her big screen debut in the movie War And Love. Since then, shes also expanded her work in the entertainment industry beyond acting in front of the camera to also produce and direct. Shes even sung in a few projects. Sedgwick is an incredibly versatile storyteller.

Sedgwick has an expansive career but has balanced having a family by splitting her time between Hollywood and the family farm in Connecticut. Sedgwick and actor Kevin Bacon met while working together in the late 1980s and married. One of their children has also become an actor, Sosie Bacon, so the entire family is well-versed in entertainment. These roles encompass some of Sedgwicks best work.

The Only Major Actors Still Alive From Murder, She Wrote
Image
For 12 seasons, "Murder, She Wrote" was the definitive cozy murder mystery show. Set in the small and charming yet dead-body-filled fictional town of Cabot Cove, Maine, the show wormed its way into the hearts of procedural fans everywhere with its familiar structure and unlikely hero -- middle-aged mystery writer Jessica Fletcher (Angela Lansbury). While the actor behind the beloved amateur sleuth passed away in 2022, "Murder, She Wrote" lives on, both in the form of much-watched reruns and in an upcoming movie adaptation.

Little is known about the new version of "Murder, She Wrote" at this point, but screenwriters Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo have said that the story will relate back to Cabot Cove and Jessica in some capacity. When it comes to potential cameos from old cast members, the pool is unfortunately limited, as several of the series' lead actors have passed away in the decades since the show ended.

Anne Heche, Charlbi Dean, Tom Sizemore And More Omitted From 2023 Oscars ‘In Memoriam’ Segment
Image
So who didn’t make the cut? There was a bit of an uproar online on Sunday over the late stars who didn’t end up featured in the 2023 Oscars “In Memoriam” segment.

While this year’s tribute to those stars we’ve lost was moving and emotional — featuring a tearful introduction from John Travolta and a powerful performance of “Calling All Angels” by Lennt Kravitz — glaring omission of some big-name stars shook up some viewers at home.

Anne Heche — who died following a fiery car crash in August at the age of 53 — was not a part of the segment, despite her many film roles.

Also absent from the televised tribute was longtime film veteran Tom Sizemore — who died on Mar. 3, at age 61, two weeks after suffering a brain aneurysm that left him hospitalized.

One of the most surprising omissions was that of Charlbi Dean, who died on Aug. 22 at...

Charles Grodin Dies, Beethoven and Midnight Run Star Was 86
Image
We're getting some very sad news to pass along as veteran actor Charles Grodin has died. Known for his starring roles in movies like The Heartbreak Kid, Midnight Run, and Beethoven, Grodin died on Tuesday of bone marrow cancer at his home in Wilton, Connecticut. He was 86 years old.

Grodin was born on April 21, 1935, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After high school, he attended the University of Miami but dropped out to pursue a career in acting. He began by studying the craft at Hb Studio in New York City, and it wasn't long before he started to find acting roles. He made his movie debut with an uncredited role in Disney's 1954 hit 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Just a few years later, he'd land the small but memorable role of Dr. Hill in Roman Polanski's acclaimed horror flick Rosemary's Baby.

Released in 1972, The Heartbreak Kid served as a breakout movie role for Grodin.

Kyra Sedgwick in Divisão Criminal (2005)
Kyra Sedgwick to Lead ABC Comedy Pilot ‘My Village’
Kyra Sedgwick in Divisão Criminal (2005)
Kyra Sedgwick is set to star in the ABC multi-camera comedy “My Village,” Variety has learned.

In the show, empty-nester mom Jean Raines (Sedgwick) wonders how she ended up alone while her children live their best lives thousands of miles away. She decides her place is with her family and as she reinserts herself into their lives, her kids realize they might actually need her more than they thought.

Jean is further described as earthy, unfiltered, and emotional. Born and raised in Iowa, she is practical and can’t be bothered with sugar coating. Very comfortable in her own skin, Jean is not a natural fit in the Los Angeles culture of anti-aging remedies and butt implants. She is a person that people confide in, except sometimes her own children. She is a fierce defender of her family and will stop at nothing to protect her connection to them. The...

There Will Soon Be a List of Every Popular Movie You Can’t Watch Anywhere Online, From ‘True Lies’ to ‘Cocoon’
Peixe Grande e suas Histórias Maravilhosas (2003)
Screenwriter John August — a “Big Fish” BAFTA Award nominee and co-scribe of Disney’s upcoming “Aladdin” remake — is seeking help from fellow cinephiles. He is in the process of compiling a list of popular movies from the past few decades that are not available to legally buy, rent or stream online. The project began Thursday, after August tweeted at Ron Howard asking the whereabout of his fourth directed feature, “Cocoon” (1980):

Hey @RealRonHoward this is crazy. We want to see Cocoon. Do you know why it’s not on iTunes/Amazon/everywhere? https://t.co/lOj8f2u6SX

— John August (@johnaugust) August 9, 2018

An hour later, August solicited other films that Internet-users cannot watch:

I’m curious how many other movies aren’t available online. So I’m starting a list. You can add to it. https://t.co/WUMx8TRFTW

8 Memorably Disastrous Movie Performances Of The Star Spangled Banner
Happy 4th of July, fellow patriots! Sorry – it’s just such an exciting day. That time every year were we can come together as Americans and watch a Jaws marathon in our basement den before screaming the national anthem on the front lawn at 3am without fear of prosecution… at least not without at least one verbal warning from the cops. And on that note, here’s a list of movie renditions of the “Star Spangled Banner” sung in the way our founding fathers intended: under great duress and during something terrible. 8. Iron Man Rocks a B.B. King Concert in Heart And Souls This is the most adorably stupid film in the entire world. As you watch Robert Downey Jr. gets harassed by a team of ghost friends you can’t help but to – for some ungodly reason – enjoy yourself. Like a library basement puppet show, you know you’re probably a little too old to be...

'Cinefamily Telethon' update: Robert Downey Jr. pledges to get new digital projector for tiny L.A. movie theater
Robert Downey Jr. at an event for O Juiz (2014)
Yesterday we told you how the nonprofit, cult movie-loving cinema Cinefamily had convinced Robert Downey Jr. to attend the 2nd Annual Fantastic, Elastic 24-Hour Holiday Telethon and to open a time capsule which had been mysteriously left for him at the organization’s base, the Silent Movie Theatre in Los Angeles. Well, it turns out the Avengers and Sherlock Holmes star did much more than that when he turned up on Saturday afternoon to appear on the telethon, which is raising money to buy a new digital projector, among other things, and to upgrade its live music sound system.

Top Ten Tuesday: Friendly Ghosts
From Japanese ghost stories such as Ringu (1998) and Ju-on (2002, remade as The Grudge) to modern revisionist ghost stories such as Brad Anderson’s Session 9 (2001) and Ti West’s The Innkeepers (2011), cinematic specters have nearly always been evil, or at the very least, malicious. Scary movies have long held the belief that ghosts should frighten us, and Hollywood had lined their pockets with that notion, but is it possible to make a good movie about “good” ghosts? We think so, and here’s our proof… our Top Ten Movies About Friendly Ghosts.

10. Heart And Souls (1993)

Anything starring Robert Downey, Jr. is worth checking out in my book, but this comedy was surprisingly enjoyable. Downey plays a guy used by four ghosts to reconcile their lives before moving on into the afterlife. The catch is, Downey is less than enthusiastic, but finds himself the catalyst for something bigger than himself and goes along for the ride.

Tiff 2012: Ghost Graduation Review
Javier Ruiz Caldera's Ghost Graduation mashes-up The Sixth Sense, Heart and Souls, and The Breakfast Club, and does so with a big smile on its face. Happily aware of the clichés of ghost films, Ghost Graduation has plenty of fun embracing the major rules of the genre (body possession, walking through walls, etc.) while still poking fun at the little quirks. Caldera and his charming cast have created a sweet film that never gets too saccharine, and a nice parody that never becomes too self-aware. Modesto (Raúl Arévalo) has seen dead people since he was in high school. As an adult, he has become a frequently-fired teacher as he continues to see ghosts despite medication and therapy. When a high school begins experiencing an irritating amount of supernatural activity, the open-minded principal, Tina (Alexandra Jiménez), hires Modesto, and they realize that he's not crazy because the school is haunted...

Hollywood – The 25th American Cinematheque Award will be presented to two-time Academy Award® nominee Robert Downey, Jr. at the Cinematheque’s annual benefit gala, American Cinematheque Board chairman Rick Nicita announced today. The presentation takes place Friday, October 14, 2011 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel’s International Ballroom in Beverly Hills.

“The American Cinematheque is extremely pleased to honor Robert Downey, Jr. as the 25th recipient of the American Cinematheque award at our celebration this year,” said Rick Nicita. “The pleasure that we receive from his charismatic and nuanced performances is matched only by the respect that he has earned for his personal and professional journey. The wide range of his talent has kept us enthralled in movies from a biopic like “Chaplin” to outrageous comedies like “Tropic Thunder” to franchises like “Sherlock Holmes” and, of course, “Iron Man.” While we have been enjoying him for years, it seems that he’s...

Ron Underwood directing new ski comedy Woodchucks
Director Ron Underwood (City Slickers) is developing a new ski team comedy called Woodchucks. The film is based on a screenplay written by Len Britton (Precious Find) a former pro ski coach and Rick Parks. J. Todd Harris (Bottle Shock) of Branded Pictures Entertainment will produce along with Bradford Broyles and Britton. Branded's Marc Marcum will serve as a co-producer.

Woodchucks is a dramatic comedy that follows "a Vermont ski team as it tries to prevent a corporate resort developer from wrecking their local mountain. Principal photography is scheduled to begin at the top of next ski season on location in Vermont."

Underwood also directed Tremors, Heart and Souls, Speechless and Mighty Joe Young. He also was responsible for the craptastic The Adventures of Pluto Nash starring Eddie Murphy. Recently, he's been directing TV on series such as Heroes, Reaper and Ugly Betty.

City Slickers Director Ron Underwood to Film Skiing Comedy Woodchucks
City Slickers director Ron Underwood is set to direct a new ski comedy called Woodchucks.

The script was written by Len Britton (Precious Find) and Rick Parks (Ever After).

Len Britton is a former professional ski coach. He was, even more, 2009 running for U.S. Senate as a Republican and told that understood problems Vermonters face. Britton is the father of five children and I believe he is the right person to pen such a scenario. Despite his only sci-fi movie wasn’t well-liked.

On the other side, Parks’ co-written Cinderella is far a better movie so no needs to doubt him. Rick Park is a Vermonter too and is partnered with Britton in the Vermont-based media company Britton-Broyles Media.

Whoopi Goldberg, Teri Hatcher, Kevin Kline, Elisabeth Shue, Robert Downey Jr., and Sally Field in Segredos de uma Novela (1991)
Development Titles of the Week: Remake Edition
Whoopi Goldberg, Teri Hatcher, Kevin Kline, Elisabeth Shue, Robert Downey Jr., and Sally Field in Segredos de uma Novela (1991)
There was an unusually large amount of remakes recently added to IMDbPro's stable of development titles this week. To give you an idea, here's a look at some of the better-known and relatively obscure reboots ready for another "re-imagining."

Soapdish –The original 1991 comedy about the hilarious backstage drama surrounding a popular soap opera and featuring an all-star cast that would still be considered an all-star cast today is getting a new script from Adultswim and Funny or Die alum Ben Schwartz and will be directed by the film's original producer Alan Griesman. Rob Reiner's producing.

The Bodyguard – Another '90s favorite that launched Whitney Houston's film career (directly into the arms of Kevin Costner) is getting a tune-up courtesy of Warner Bros., producer Dan Lin (Sherlock Holmes) and the writing team of Jeremiah Friedman and Nick Palmer.

Loft – Patrick Wilson and James Marsden are looking to star in Anonymous Content's adaptation of a 2008 Belgian thriller from director Erik Van Looy, who will return to helm the remake.

Rapt – Oscar nominee Susanne Bier (In a Better World) is teaming up with Smuggler Films to remake this 2009 French thriller that tells the true story of a billionaire who is kidnapped and held for ransom.

Hello Ghost – The Korean comedy Christopher Columbus chose to remake is so obscure, even we had trouble finding it on IMDb. And, its plot about a guy haunted by ghosts had us wondering if that Korean film wasn't already a remake of Heart and Souls.

The Boss of It All – It's hard to believe that the guy who made Dancer in the Dark, Antichrist and Breaking the Waves also makes comedies. But, Lars Von Trier's 2006 film about a guy who creates an imaginary boss for his tech company is more like the "The Office" and the "The IT Crowd," than anything from his Domge 95 Collective. Universal's tapped "Arrested Development"'s Mitch Hurwitz to adapt the film.

If you know of something in the works, you can submit it via our online submission form. It does not have to be a remake.

Chris Columbus
Chris Columbus to Direct Remake of Korean Film Hello Ghost
Chris Columbus
Chris Columbus has signed on to direct a remake of the Korean box-office hit Hello Ghost. The film centers on a man who tries to kill himself, but survives and becomes haunted by four ghosts. The ghost won't stop haunting the man until he helps them fulfill a wish. If this premise gives you a flashback to the 1993 Robert Downey Jr. flick Heart and Souls, you're not alone. Columbus tells Deadline that he's a fan of Korean cinema after he saw Hello Ghost, he "was immediately struck by the film's ability to mix comedy, drama and complex emotional themes. Its strong universal storyline translates to any culture, and I’m looking forward to bringing a version of this wonderful story to the English-speaking audience." So if Columbus comes to your door and hands you a copy of Heart and Souls, you'll know why.

Bankability: Robert Downey, Jr.
Robert Downey, Jr. has pulled off an incredible feat in his career, going from nearly less than zero for around 25 years to box office hero in the last two. Aside from supporting roles in a few popular movies, Mr. Downey could have been labeled box office poison for most of his career, better known for the poisons he was putting into his system than for his movies. But despite so many commercial strikes, Hollywood kept letting him play, and it finally paid off in 2008. Following supporting work in movies like Back to School and Weird Science, Robert Downey, Jr.'s first at-bat as a leading man was The Pick-Up Artist in 1987, playing a womanizer opposite Molly Ringwald. The comedy wasn't disastrous in its first September weekend, grossing $4.5 million at 1,129 theaters, but it was overshadowed by the debut of Fatal Attraction that same weekend and fizzled out rapidly by the era's standards,...

The Five Best Robert Downey, Jr. Roles
I was all prepared to be the pretentious douche who, when ranking Robert Downey, Jr.'s five best roles, weighed the list heavy with pre-rehabbed Downey. Until Iron Man, Downey had always been a brilliant but under-appreciated actor. Even still, most of his pre-comeback script choices were spotty, at best. He used to excel at the smarmy sleazy guy with the occasional bit of charm (The Pick-Up Arist, Two Girls and a Guy) and, up until around 1995 -- when his career went off the rails -- he made a lot of bad to mediocre guilty pleasure movies, like Heart and Souls, Air America, Chances Are and Only You (if he wasn't snorting coke before Only You, that movie probably would've driven him to it). He was trying really hard, I suppose, to be a romantic comedy leading man, and had drugs not taken over his life, it's sad to think...

Robert Downey, Jr. Will Own What's Left of Your Panties | The Rdj News Dump
Robert Downey, Jr. is making the rounds this week, out in support of The Human Centipede Iron Man 2, and since he's being forced to answer questions, he's confirming some stories, saying a lot of stupid stuff, and being generally charming. Here's a quick rundown of a few of the Rdj nuggets so far this week:

In an interview with Moviehole, Rdj said that the forthcoming Todd Phillips-directed comedy, Due Date, in which he stars alongside Zack Galifianakis, is the "second greatest movie I've ever done."

"I've seen the movie. It's like the second greatest movie I've ever done - largely due to Zach Galifianakis, who is crazy good in every scene, and Todd Phillips, who is just one of the great American directors. I guarantee you're going to love it - I went to the last screening and people were literally saying 'Oh my god, It's gotta stop - my face hurts!

Free Flick of the Day: Heart and Souls
Robert Downey Jr., Charles Grodin, Kyra Sedgwick, Tom Sizemore, and Alfre Woodard in Morrendo e Aprendendo (1993)
Heart and Souls was an August-dump movie in the summer of 1993. The critics of the day pretty roundly trashed it, and it only made about $16 million, but it was also Robert Downey Jr.'s first movie after his Oscar nomination for Chaplin. I had been so moved and enchanted by that performance that I gamely bought a ticket to see his new film. It has a pretty complicated plot and it's very definitely an attempt to replicate some Capra feelgood schmaltz, but for me it worked.

It begins in the 1950s when four different people -- all with unfinished issues -- board a bus. The bus gets into an accident with a car that's headed on the way to a hospital, carrying a pregnant mother. Due to some unexplained divine intervention, the four new ghosts (Charles Grodin, Alfre Woodard, Kyra Sedgwick and Tom Sizemore) are assigned to look after the newborn boy,...

Downey plays a guy used by four ghosts to reconcile their lives before moving on into the afterlife. The catch is, Downey is less than enthusiastic, but finds himself the catalyst for something bigger than himself and goes along for the ride. The cast is comprised of several well-known actors making the film that much more enjoyable.

9. Truly, Madly, Deeply

The 1991 charming, English love story of a woman,...
