Cambodia Submits Horror Movie ‘Tenement’ for Best International Feature at the Academy Awards
Jogo da Sobrevivência (1985)
Billed as a psychological horror movie, the feature film Tenement could be competing for Best International Feature at the 98th Academy Awards next year, Variety reports.

Directed by Inrasothythep Neth and Sokyou Chea, Tenement is Cambodia’s official submission for the category. How this works is that each non-u.S. country is allowed to submit just *one* movie for potential Oscar consideration. That list of submissions is then whittled down by members of the Academy, who ultimately select the films that will compete for the award.

That shortlist will be announced on December 16, Variety notes in today’s report, and the final five nominees in the Best International Feature category...

Cambodia Submits Horror Thriller ‘Tenement’ as Oscar Entry
Image
Cambodia has submitted the psychological horror thriller “Tenement,” co-directed by Inrasothythep Neth and Sokyou Chea, as its contender for best international feature at the 98th Academy Awards.

The film is set within a decaying Khmer Rouge–era tenement in Phnom Penh. It follows Soriya (Thorn Thanet), a Cambodian-Japanese manga artist who returns home after her mother’s death and becomes trapped in a series of terrifying visions that blur the boundaries between the past and present.

“Tenement” world premiered in the Big Screen Competition at the International Film Festival Rotterdam in 2024 and has since screened at Osaka Asian Film Festival, Ho Chi Minh City International Film Festival, Seattle International Film Festival, Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival, Kaohsiung Film Festival, Luxembourg City Film Festival, Motel X and Horrorant’s Fright Nights, among others.

Shot across Tokyo and Phnom Penh, production began in 2020 but was delayed for two years by the Covid-19 pandemic.

2 Years Later, ‘Alice in Borderland’ Season 3 Finally Gets Action-Packed First Trailer
Image
The wait is almost over. With just one month until the premiere of Alice in Borderland Season 3, Netflix decided to unveil a new trailer for the new episodes of the Japanese series. Once again, the story will center around a group of people trying to survive deadly games — however, differently from Squid Game, there's no cash prize waiting for them at the finish line. Instead, they get to discover what the heck is going on and who put them in such a terrible place. The series returns on September 25.

The new trailer seems to confirm the information given at the end of Season 2 — that Arisu (Kento Yamazaki) was indeed able to escape Borderland.

How Can Independent Filmmakers Give Their Movies a Fighting Chance in a Perilous Market? ‘If You’re Not Advocating for Yourself, You’re Already Losing’
Image
How can the filmmakers of low-budget independent films formulate sales and distribution strategies at a global level when they don’t have the same resources wielded by the larger production companies? As part of this week’s IFFR Pro Days, the industry program at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, experts gave their opinions.

Kyle Greenberg, head of marketing and distribution at U.S. company Utopia, said that filmmakers, especially ones helming independent and guerrilla productions, should be “the biggest advocates of their movies” and actively involved in the promotion, marketing and sales strategy of their titles.

“If you’re not advocating for yourself, you’re already losing. Filmmakers need to be thinking about marketing and audiences. If you are making a film in isolation, it could be art, but you are not thinking of where the movie lives,” he said.

“When we acquire movies, we are thinking about potential audiences,...

Film Review: Tenement (2024) by Sokyou Chea and Inrasothythep Neth
Image
As Cambodia crawls out of its movie-making infancy and starts to produce content outside the country's borders, it's chosen to do so with the mindset of appealing to a more Western audience than what would initially be expected. Graced with spectacular visuals, a highly engaging technical skillset belying its brief existence, and a wholly unexpected mindset that's quite immersive into the experience, co-writer/directors Sokyou Chea and Inrasothythep Neth provide one of the more impressive and outwardly enjoyable introductions to Cambodian genre cinema with their newest effort “Tenement” screening at the International Film Festival Rotterdam.

Tenement is screening at International Film Festival Rotterdam

Following her mother's death, Soriya (Thanet Thorn), a Japanese-Cambodian manga artist, decides to travel to Cambodia along with her boyfriend Daichi (Yoshihiko Hosoda), to find out more about the country her mother fled. Soriya reunites with her lost family Aunt Mao (Sveng Socheata) and moves into the...

Rotterdam Heads Talk Fest’s Christopher Nolan, Sandra Hüller Connections & Focus On New Talent
Image
The International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) opens this evening with New Zealand director Jonathan Olgilvie’s coming-of-age tale Head South set against the late 1970s, post-punk music culture of his home city of Christchurch.

IFFR previously selected Olgilvie’s sci-fi thriller Lone Wolf for its Big Screen Competition in 2021.

“It’s the first time we’re going to meet him in person because it was during Corona,” says IFFR Artistic Director Vanja Kaludjercic of the first selection.

“When you put the two films side by side, you ask how can one filmmaker make two such different films,” she adds. “We really admire his creativity and ingenuity.”

Over the course of the next 10 days, Rotterdam will screen some 440 works.

The Main Competition for this 53rd edition is characteristically diverse.

The 14 features in the running for the main Tiger Award include Brooklyn-based filmmaker Madeleine Hunt-Ehrlich’s The Ballad of Suzanne Césaire, exploring the life of the titular,...

The Walking Dead Zombies Invade Other Image Series for 20th Anniversary Covers
Image
The Walking Dead is celebrating its 20th anniversary with special variant covers that will appear on multiple Image Comics titles in October. The comic, created by Robert Kirkman, has had a significant impact on both Image Comics and the zombie genre. Image Comics will release a total of 35 variant covers, featuring different artists' interpretations of the iconic Walking Dead characters, throughout October to honor the comic's legacy.

The Walking Dead is celebrating the twentieth anniversary of the comic's debut this fall with a series of special variant covers set to "infect Image Comics titles all through October," according to an official Image press release. In the two decades since Image first released Robert Kirkman's black-and-white zombie saga, the comic has inspired AMC's massive television franchise of the same name, in addition to numerous other takes on zombies.

Kirkman's Walking Dead, which ran for 193 issues between October 2003 and July...

Jogo da Sobrevivência (1985)
The Unseen - 'Tenement'
Jogo da Sobrevivência (1985)
I love any movie that opens with its own personalized rap song. This was commonplace during the 1980s and early 90s as soundtrack sales proved to be just as lucrative as the movies themselves. Many films were made greater by their cunning use of personalized rapster tunes - for example Ghostbusters 2, Police Academy 4: Citizens of Patrol, The Addams Family, and Kenneth Branaugh’s Hamlet (I think, but I may be confusing it with Wild, Wild West). And 1985’s Tenement (also known as Game of Survival) is no exception, opening and closing with the not-so renowned hit “Tenement” featuring some wicked beats with a rapper occasionally saying the word “tenement.” The song is surprisingly upbeat and rather perky for the disturbing carnage that is about to unfold. Yet, somehow is it is the perfect opening to this flick.

I’ll also begin by professing my love for Roberta Findlay.
