Cheerful comedy about psychics served as a showcase for pop singer Cyndi Lauper (in her acting debut). She's a comic natural playing Sylvia Pickel, an unlucky-in-love single gal whose "psychic guide" leads her into the arms of fellow clairvoyant Jeff Goldblum (in possibly his smoothest comic performance to date). Both have been duped by con-man Peter Falk into finding a lost city of gold in Ecuador, and for the most part "Vibes" is a funny, knockabout journey with witty vignettes scattered about. The third act does drag its feet, but the script is full of great exchanges and there's a wonderful scene on the dance floor between the two stars. Lots of amusing one-liners, such as my favorite from Goldblum after Elizabeth Peña disrobes: "Parts of me are already applauding." **1/2 out of ****

Sylvia (Cyndi Lauper) and Nick (Jeff Goldblum) meet at an institute studying those individuals who have psychic abilities. Sylvia channels a lady named Louise, who can predict the future, and Nick can touch objects and then give detailed accounts of the objects' history. Whew! This twosome do not exactly hit it off, at first. Then, Sylvia learns that her boyfriend only wants her around so he can win at the racetrack and Nick discovers his long-standing partner has been cheating, too. Suddenly, Harry (Peter Falk) appears and asks for the duo's help in locating his missing son in Ecuador. He'll pay bigtime, of course. It's off to South America, to battle forces of evil in a quest for truth and, possibly, a treasure. Can Sylvia and Nick begin to like each other among the Inca ruins?

This is, truly, a funny movie. Lauper does a great job as the much put-upon Brooklyn dame and Goldblum is quite nice as her more learned and unexpected suitor. Falk is just down right hilarious as the scheming Harry. The script has some great one-liners and surprises while who can resist an exotic setting south of the border? If you should stumble across this film on television or at the video store, give it a whirl. It will bring a dose of sunshine into your life.

Vibes entertains me immensely. While I can somewhat comprehend those who don't enjoy this movie, I don't share their attitude at all. Cyndi Lauper's lovelorn portrayal of Silvia is perfect in style and comic timing. She is utterly believable. She also pronounces Scandinavian and Incan sounds with flair. Peter Falk displays his usual mastery of comedy as the pathologically lying Harry, reminiscent of his role in The In-Laws (1979). He has the best and most absurd lines dealing with static electricity, a friend's infidelities with his former wives, his desire to be someone (someone with money), and how women are soft and might bounce out of a hotel, among many others. I like Jeff Goldblum in just about every movie he does, including this one, though here as Nick he seems a bit more distracted than usual. Still, that's a trait of many of his characters and is perhaps a component of his charm. Supporting players (Sands, Gress, Lerner, Bieri, &c.) all perform excellently, and the music is enchanting, particularly during the scenic settings in Ecuador. Although I've dubbed a fine DVD copy from a late-night movie channel, I'll buy a commercial release as soon as one's available. If I always wanted an intricate intellectual acting masterpiece with minimal music and scenery, I'd watch 12 Angry Men (1957) another dozen times, but Vibes is just the thing for light, fun fare.

For some reason then I have actually never seen the 1988 adventure comedy "Vibes". And even more surprisingly so, as the movie even has my favorite actor on the cast list. But I guess it is because I never stumbled upon a copy of the movie before now in 2021.

Needless to say that I opted to sit down, on the accounts of it being a movie that I hadn't already seen, the synopsis sounded good, and the movie had Julian Sands on the cast list. And of course, having the likes of Jeff Goldblum and Peter Falk on the cast list definitely helped to sweeten the deal.

The storyline told in "Vibes" was good. This wasn't a movie that required a whole lot of concentration or investment from the audience as it was a fairly light-hearted and non-too serious movie. So you just switch off the brain, grab whatever snack you have, lean back and watch the movie.

They had gotten together a good ensemble of actors and actresses for the movie. And I will say that Cyndi Lauper actually did perform surprisingly well here, something that was I a bit hesitant about having her in a lead role. But she surprised me with her performance. It was also fun to watch Jeff Goldblum and Peter Falk in their roles. It was a shame, though, that Julian Sands didn't have more time on the screen.

If you enjoy a light adventure movie, then "Vibes" is certainly a good choice. And despite its age, it is a movie that has aged well, and it quite watchable today.

I am rating "Vibes" a six out of ten stars.

Sylvia Pickel (Cindy Lauper) is a trance medium that in the beginning is seen talking with her spirit guide Louise and during a physics' class she meets Nick Deezy (Jeff Goldblum) that has the power of determining the history of events surrounding an object around him by just touching it. One nights Sylvia goes in her kitchen and finds Harry Buscafusco (Peter Falk) that claimed to be there for hiring her for 50,000 dollars if she takes him to a remote country in South America where his son is gone missing. Nick sees this as a golden opportunity because he works as a museum guide but his qualities are seen as circus acts. Once in Ecuador Nick discovers that Harry is up to something and he soon discovers it: Harry sent them there for finding a lost city full of gold because Harry's last partner went insane in the process. After reluctantly accepting (with Harry getting killed in the process) they find this lost city and the pyramid that was embedded of all the psychic energy in the world by an alien race.

This is one of those 'turn off your brain and enjoy films' because if you think too much about the plot, you may not like it. The acting by Lauper, Goldblum and Falk were actually surprising, and the plot looked at times a good rip-off of the INDIANA JONES movies. Not one of those movies to be taken seriously, just for a day when you don't want to think too much.

It's all about the vibes. An endearingly quirky late 80s adventure comedy with a bit of romance on the side, sees Jeff Goldblum and Cindy Lauper as psychics hired on to head to Ecuador to find a treasure of a lost Aztec civilisation. The support cast is remotely good with the likes of Julian Sands, Peter Falk, Michael Lerner and a very minor part for a pre-stardom Steve Buscemi. The chemistry between stars Goldblum and Lauper is delightful, as Goldblum's dry gawkiness matches well with Lauper animated perkiness. The indistinct plot is quite slow going, often silly and never does it feel all that complete with little going on, but it's the snappy script with its one-liners and performances (especially Falk's comical turn) that makes it quite agreeable along with the exotic South American locations. Some moments bestow atmospheric touches and danger, namely the sequences around the ruins when something mystical eventuates, but these moments are probably weakest inclusions.

I have fond memories of this movie from when it came out, so all these years later I decided to watch it again, and I still really like it. It's very silly, but it's reasonably funny and the Indiana-Jones-style adventure aspects are pretty well done.

The big surprise of the movie when it came out was Cyndi Lauper as a wacky psychic who dresses like a very colorful hooker. She was surprisingly effective as an actress, even though she was simply playing her basic persona. She and Goldblum make one of the most atypical Hollywood romantic couples I think I've ever seen.

I won't call this a great comedy, but it is a hugely likable one.

Cindy Lauper and Jeff Goldblum are psychics. They are recruited for Peter Falk to go on down to Ecuador for reasons that keep shifting around, because he's Peter Falk.

It's not a great script and director Ken Kwapis doesn't bring much to it; neither does Goldblum, who seems to be cranky. However, Falk is always great in a role that reminds me of his character in THE IN-LAWS, and Miss Lauper, in her first screen role, makes me laugh every time she opens her mouth; she's got a voice that makes Fran Drescher sound like Helen Mirren. Steve Buscemi has a small role, and Julian Sands is also wasted. Still, a lot of fun.

I've seen this movie about 30 times and it always makes me feel good.. I don't know what it is about this movie but it seems to help me through bad times. Theres something in the atmosphere in the film that makes me feel good and the environment where the movie is made is just beautiful. (yeah, sure.. the 'real' film critics are saying that you can't rate a movie just on behalf of the spectacular scenery but FU, I say). I can rate a movie just the way i want to! Isn't that what IMDB is all about? I enjoyed this movie and I hope many others will too. Don't stare at the ratings. If you want to see a fun movie that's not too "serious". Rent this movie and let your brain rest for awhile, just enjoy the the scenery, the acting, the story and the eighties !! Cheers to all from Finland.

We have seen this movie quite a few times and would love to do so again. Cyndi Lauper does a fantastic job of acting the part of Sylvia who is psychic and Jeff Goldblum has a ball in his part as another psychic , both of whom are conned into traveling to South America to help Harry(Peter Falk) find his "son". The comedy is really good and it is such a fun movie that our kids love it too. We would love to get it on DVD but have not been able to find it anywhere. Good to see that other crazies exist out there who love it as much as we do. If prayers are answered, please release this fantastic movie on DVD for all it's fans. We had a copy of it on VHS ages ago but as it no longer works, would love to get it again.

Vibes is an odd movie and not in a good way. It starts promising at research center for psychics and then turns into to a boring Romancing The Stone knockoff, witch was dissapointing to me.

Jeff Goldblum is one of my favorite actors but he seems miscast here. He looks almost a little bored to be frank, but is still one of the only highlights in the flick, due to his "Goldblumness". Cyndi Lauper is likeable enough on her own or in her short scene with the great Steve Buscemi, but her and Goldblum don't have any chemistry together on screen. A romantic comedy without a beileve romance is usually an immediate sink.

Whatever the quality of the acting, the scenery, the locations etc., this movie is just good clean fun - so much so that you can see the actors themselves grinning during certain scenes.

There are some great one-liners, some unique actions - find the "handshake" at the racetrack for a good example.

The opening music is dramatic (low end's are cool) and Cyndi's closing number is a classic.

Yes, this film is not as sophisticated as many others but who want's sophistication all the time? I've chilled out in front of this movie several times and find it as endearing and never one I'd want to sleep through!

If you get a chance to see it, then do so - chill out, have a laugh!

Entertaining offbeat little comedy starring Jeff Goldblum and Cyndi Lauper as psychics getting involved with the search for Incan treasure. Obviously influenced by Romancing the Stone and the various mystical comedies of the 80s like The Golden Child. The main selling points are the likable stars who have nice chemistry and the great supporting turn from Peter Falk. Also the fog shrouded Incan ruins set that is very obviously a set but who cares it makes the old movie fan in me happy. Give it a look, if you aren't super critical and just looking for a fun 80s comedy I think you will enjoy this.

This is trying to be Romancing the Stone (1984) with Peter Falk trying to be Danny DeVito. It's fun to try but there are some elements are inferior. Falk is not quite the comedic power of DeVito. The Goldblum Lauper pairing doesn't have the required heat. They do have a fun quirkiness that keeps it from falling flat. There is a few fun scenes but in the end, this doesn't have enough. It's a close call but it's not enough.

It's a shame this comedy/adventure, about two slacker city folk with psychic powers, bombed so hard in theaters because Cyndi Lauper - the 1980's icon who sang about girls wanting to have fun - is a pretty good actress, sharing the right amount of lightweight chemistry with fellow psychic (and really nice guy) Jeff Goldblum and rogue con-artist Peter Falk, who tricks the duo into finding his kidnapped son when he's actually seeking a mysterious pyramid of light on a mountaintop...

Here's where the film, after establishing the likable characters in New York and then their hijinx in a small Ecuador town, goes downhill: once they reach the destination, there's nothing more to build: But Lauper's presence alone making the decent parts, and even the boring ones, somewhat worthwhile. And it's no surprise that WARLOCK actor Julian Sands is a worthy adversary...

Produced by Ron Howard, perhaps because his close friends, NIGHT SHIFT and SPLASH writing team Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel, penned the story and screenplay, he climbed on board in the first place: And while VIBES is also a quirky romantic comedy with aspects of science-fiction and outdoorsy pulp adventure, director Ken Kwapis keeps the pace thanks to Lauper and Goldlum, who, unlike their reverse-magnetic behavior on set, seem to really be in touch with each other...

Then again, that's what actors do, pretend. The best scenes as the polar opposites bonding in New York: Cyndi's Eli Diamond has an imaginary friend giving her predictions while Goldblum's Nick Dreezy views the past by touching objects, both possessing "gifts" that are, as danger roles in, more of a curse: but at least they have each other to depend on, and ultimately, fall in love with.

This is just writer-room gag lines with a weak, rippled-off "romancing the stone" type of adventure plot to hang the jokes onto. Shot on location in Ecuador, but not particularly picturesque. Lauper in her first role is sexier than I remembered her in those days. Goldblum saves the movie with his acting chops and timing. Falk is just clownish and wasted. It's got little heart, and zero soul. It's not worth the watch.

This is a fun, underrated film that suffers from a poorly thought-out title. The 80s was ripe with psychic films like Dreamscape and Poltergeist; and of course Raiders of the Lost Arc was the big blockbuster of the decade. Vibes plays on both of these popular themes, and the title is probably meant to denote the humorous aspect since the term "vibes" was a popular phrase in the 80s used to express a sense of good or bad feelings from a person or thing, mainly attributed to hippy or quasi-guru types that were not taken very seriously.

But if you're a fan of Goldblum or Lauper, this will be a real treat. Both are visually at their prime here and the plot is a comedy-drama that is surprisingly not bad. Peter Faulk does a decent job however totally obliterates his Columbo persona.

The delivery is a bit stiff at times but overall a decent watch with a surprisingly good soundtrack.

This film is terrible. This was a film that was meant to launch Cyndi Laupner's film career. It didn't. The film was written by Deborah Blum Lowell Ganz & Babaloo Mandel. However they seem not to know if it wanted to be a rip-off "Ghostbusters" or "Romancing the Stone".

A week after the film opened to bad box office and bad reviews Cyndi said "Hey I didn't write it or direct it". SHe she did however contribute the song "A Hole in My Heart That Goes All the Way To China". That song was also a disaster. It was to be included or her upcoming record album but she had it remove to further remove herself from the film.

Peter Falk also has a part in this but its not a big enough part to save this piece of crap!

30 years you will be hard pressed to see a DVD release or see anybody involved with the film willing to talk about it.

Falk is lying, of course, and it doesn't take Goldblum long to figure it out. He wants them to find a hidden temple in the mountains where all the psychic energy in the world comes from. One of his friends found it, but is now comatose. But they're not the only ones looking for it.

This is sort of a Raiders of the Lost Ark meets The Power. What makes it a cut above a fluffy comedy is the casting of Cindy Lauper, a unique personality, the talented, quirky Jeff Goldblum, and the always wonderful Peter Falk. I think my favorite scene is the one where Goldblum confronts him, and Falk quickly makes up another story to support his lies.

Fun movie.
