Pulse Season 1 Premiere: Watch the Beginning of New Medical Drama
Image
In the series premiere of the upcoming medical drama Pulse — debuting April 3 — a severe storm is racing toward Miami. But the staff of Maguire Medical Center are just as concerned about the pressure rising within their facility as the dangerous conditions outside.

Dr. Danny Simms (Fall of the House of Usher’s Willa Fitzgerald) and her supervisor, chief resident of emergency medicine Dr. Xander Phillips (Colin Woodell) are at the center of the hospital chatter. Their fellow doctors and nurses have a lot of questions about Danny and Xander’s relationship, and you can watch the pieces start to come together in the video above of the first five minutes of the series.

“The premiere is so great because it launches you into the dynamics of everyone at this hospital,” Fitzgerald tells Tudum.

The first characters we see in the Pulseclip are third-year emergency resident Dr. Sam Elijah (Jessie...

Tim Burtons First Collaboration With Disney Is 6 Minutes of Nightmare Fuel
Image
Tim Burton's Vincent short showcases his unique Gothic style and iconic references despite initial Disney disapproval. Vincent includes cameos of Burton's future iconic characters, proving his consistent vision throughout his career. Vincent's success on a shoestring budget exemplifies Burton's determination to break the mold and pursue passion projects.

Tim Burton's work is easily recognizable due to its obscure Gothic motifs and ancient style of animation. Whether it's the creepy joy seen throughout The Nightmare Before Christmas or the whacky energy of Beetlejuice, Burton has managed to appease a generation of horror fans with his unique creativity. Many fans will be aware of Burton's collaboration with Disney, allowing the director to produce a wealth of box office hits, including Dumbo, Alice in Wonderland, and James and the Giant Peach.

Yet, some fans will be surprised to hear that Burton's first run-in with Disney was not very successful, and the...

Roger Corman, King of the Bs, Dies at 98
Image
Roger Corman, the pioneering producer and director, known affectionately as “the king of B movies,” passed away on May 9 at his home in Santa Monica, California. Corman had as much influence over modern Hollywood as Steven Spielberg or Martin Scorsese. And for good reason: Without him there likely wouldn’t even have been a Spielberg or Scorsese.

This maker of hundreds of low-budget horror, sci-fi, and exploitation films is to this day remembered by many, and rather unfairly, as a B-movie hack, but Corman’s aesthetic sensibilities have come to dominate the franchises we now call tent poles, and his protégés number among the most influential people in cinema. And he enjoyed every minute of it.

Corman came off as very humble, resembling no one so much as Mr. Rogers. He laughed at himself and his experiences frequently. Many of the movies that he made were ridiculous but they were knowingly so.

Carla Gugino Says She Has ‘Ptsd’ Over Sexist Directors: ‘It’s Actual Insanity’
Image
Carla Gugino is done playing anyone’s games on set, especially when it comes to sexist directors.

The “Gerald’s Game” alum, frequent Mike Flanagan collaborator, and “Girls on the Bus” star reflected on moments in her career where she felt ignored by male directors. Gugino told Interview magazine while in discussion with “Game of Thrones” alum Lena Headey that she still suffers from “a little Ptsd” over being railroaded on sets.

“I had an instance recently where I needed to assert something important to me and I hesitated because I wondered if it would be perceived as demanding,” Gugino said. “The difference at this age is that I will just push myself to do it. Ultimately, it was received positively. I still do have a little Ptsd from a career full of instances where you’re acting with a male actor, and you say to the director, ‘Hey, what about...

How Every Fall of the House of Usher Character Died
Image
Like all of Mike Flanagan's projects with Netflix, The Fall of the House of Usher left viewers completely satisfied. Unlike The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass, however, this 2023 series pays homage to one of the greatest American writers: Edgar Allan Poe. The series follows the last days of the Ushers, a billionaire clan, as death takes them one by one, and they are simply unable to stop it from happening.

The Fall of the House of Usher is based on Poe's eponymous story, and each character takes their name from a character in Poe's bibliography. Pieces like "The Raven," "The Spectacles," and "Tamerlane" inspired each of these character's storylines and definitely hint at their demise. Poe lovers surely saw it coming, but viewers who went into the series without this information will be surprised to learn about how faithful these adaptations were.

Fall Of The House Of Usher Star Reveals Camille's Backstory & How It Ties Into Her Death
Image
Camille actor Kate Siegel reveals Camille's backstory in The Fall of the House of Usher, including her Roma heritage and childhood as a "con artist". Camille's mother warned her about Roderick Usher being evil, and the character saw in her final moments that her death had been inevitable since her decision to follow in his footsteps. Like Flanagan's previous horror shows and movies, The Fall of the House of Usher excels because it places a big emphasis on complex, flawed characters, with scares then woven in.

The Fall of the House of Usher star Kate Siegel shares Camille's entire backstory and how it connects to her grisly fate. Mike Flanagan's latest Netflix horror show serves as an adaptation of the combined works of Edgar Allan Poe, chronicling the demise of family members of a pharmaceutical empire's patriarch. Each member of the Usher family experiences a gruesome death, with Camille...

One Fall Of The House Of Usher Arthur Pym Detail Makes A Verna Theory Even Scarier
Image
Arthur Gordon Pym's connection to Verna suggests a deeper involvement with her and a possible time travel theory. Verna's reminder to Pym about the atrocities committed during the expedition implies she lured him into a deal for punishment. Verna's inclusion of Pym in her plan was crucial for the Ushers to escape legal charges and achieve their goals, ultimately leading to their punishments.

A hidden Arthur Gordon Pym detail in Netflix's The Fall of the House of Usher makes a Verna theory even darker. Based on the short stories and poems of Edgar Allan Poe, The Fall of the House of Usher primarily unfolds as a tale of karma where the central Usher family faces the consequences of living a life replete with acts of immorality. However, beyond that, the show also has several subtle details and easter eggs that not only reveal how it connects to the...

House Of Usher Theory Reveals The Family Was Cursed For Decades Before Roderick & Madeline’s Deal
Image
The theory suggests that the curse on the Usher family began before they made a deal with Verna, and their decisions and wrongdoings contributed to their own fate. Longfellow, Roderick and Madeline's biological father, may have made a deal with Verna first, leading to the curse on the Usher family. Verna likely kept a close eye on Roderick and Madeline throughout their lives, and their choices may have been influenced by their past trauma and suffering.

According to a theory surrounding The Fall of the House of Usher's Verna twist, the Usher family was cursed long before Madeline and Roderick made a deal with Verna. Although The Fall of the House of Usher keeps going back and forth between the past and the present from its opening episodes itself, it takes its time to reveal how Roderick and Madeline's past timeline and 1979 encounter with Verna connect to their family's present fate.

Generational Sins: The True Horror of “The Fall of the House of Usher”
Image
A sexual encounter between two teenagers turns into a bloodbath with one or both of them no longer amongst the living. A few friends passing the dutchie discover how hazardous smoking is for your health when a maniac with a crossbow turns their bodies into compost. And so on, and so on. Horror films traffic in people paying for their sins. Most importantly, the genre redefines sinful behavior as time progresses and societies shift like tectonic plates. Those teens having sex and friends smoking weed fare better today than 40 years ago.

But the one transgression that horror consistently confronts? Generational sins. Netflix’s The Fall of the House of Usher continues the genre’s tradition in which older family members make momentary decisions with little or no regard for the future. And when push comes to shove, the past catches up to their progeny, leaving blood stains and residue in its wake.

Chilling Fall Of The House Of Usher Theory Reveals The Real Reason Madeline Wears A Wig
Image
Spoilers ahead for The Fall of the House of Usher, including the show's ending.

Madeline Usher wears a wig throughout the series, and a fan theory suggests it is linked to her fascination with Ancient Egypt and Cleopatra. Removing her wig before meeting Verna symbolizes Madeline's vulnerability and connection to the immortal entity, who sees through her masks.

One chilling Fall of the House of Usher fan theory might just reveal the real reason Madeline Usher wears a wig throughout the majority of the eight-episode Netflix series. In Mike Flanagan's adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's short story, twins Roderick (Bruce Greenwood; Zach Gilford) and Madeline Usher (Mary McDonnell; Willa Fitzgerald) build an empire out of "nothing but dirt and trauma" after learning that the former CEO of Fortunato Pharmaceuticals — the place their mother worked before her death — was their estranged father. At first, Roderick is just along for the ride,...

Why The Fall Of The House Of Usher Is Less Emotional Than Mike Flanagan's Other Shows
Image
In just over 10 years, Mike Flanagan has created a horror style as recognizable as that of the greatest masters of horror. You know when you're watching a Flanagan joint because of the focus on atmosphere, the selective use of jump scares, and also his highly emotional writing. More often than not, particularly in his more recent work, Flanagan expertly combines scares and tears, crafting stories that pull at the heartstrings.

But that's not "The Fall of the House of Usher." Flanagan's last show for Netflix before his move to Prime Video is unlike anything he's done in a while. "The Fall of the House of Usher" follows the titular Usher family, whose patriarch Roderick created a pharma empire plagued by tragic and bizarre deaths.

Like "The Haunting of Hill House" and "The Haunting of Bly Manor," Flanagan's latest is inspired by the writings of a popular author. In the case...

The Fall Of The House Of Usher Ending Explained: Evil Things In Robes Of Sorrow
Image
The house of Usher as it appears in Mike Flanagan's Netflix series "The Fall of the House of Usher" is a far cry from the "mansion of gloom" described in Edgar Allan Poe's original story. It definitely has the "gloom" part down, but it's only a humble house at the opposite end of the street from a true mansion, where the young Roderick and Madeline Usher's biological father lives but refuses to acknowledge them. Whereas Poe told the story of an "old money" family, fallen from greatness due to an implied family tradition of inbreeding, Flanagan tells a new money fable of the Ushers' meteoric rise and their grisly downfall.

The series folds in story elements and Easter eggs from many of Poe's works, ranging from the most famous to the more obscure. Of equal influence is the real-life scandal of the Sackler family, whose crimes have been...

What Critics And Fans Are Saying About The Fall Of The House Of Usher
Image
Following the breakout success of Shirley Jackson adaptation "The Haunting of Hill House," horror filmmaker Mike Flanagan returned to Netflix with a number of other spooky tales, and today opened the doors to his final cursed house in "The Fall of the House of Usher." Loosely based on the collected works of Edgar Allan Poe, the series explores the corrupted legacy of pharmaceutical magnate Roderick Usher and the grim deaths of his spoiled adult children.

Flanagan is known for slow-burn stories that are heavy on emotion, but "The Fall of the House of Usher" is a little different. In Flanagan's own words, "'Hill House' is kind of a string quartet, and '[The Haunting of] Bly Manor' is this delicate, kind of beautiful piece of classical piano music, and 'The Fall of the House of Usher' is heavy metal." This latest serving of scares certainly has a lot more gore than any of Flanagan's previous works,...

Netflix's The Fall Of The House Of Usher Asks: 'What If Succession Was A Horror Story?'
Image
This post contains spoilers for "The Fall of the House of Usher."

Mike Flanagan's latest horror mini-series, "The Fall of the House of Usher," transposes the stories of Edgar Allan Poe to the 21st century. In this retelling, "The House of Usher" is a nouveau riche dynasty and the owners of a pharmaceutical corporation, Fortunato. Twin siblings Roderick (Bruce Greenwood) and Madeline (Mary McDonnell) sit at the head of that table, with other seats filled by Roderick's spoiled adult children -- six of them, from five different mothers, who all stand to inherit a piece of his fortune. Comparisons to the recently concluded "Succession" have already begun.

Like the Roy family in "Succession," the Ushers have made their fortune by poisoning society. The Roys, as the owners of media conglomerate Waystar Royco, reshaped the mind of the American consumer with far-right political propaganda. Their "news" network, Atn, is Fox in all but name.

‘The Fall of the House of Usher’ Is Mike Flanagan’s Spectral, Vicious Screed Against Actual Ghouls
Image
For the absurdly wealthy, it can seem like nothing in their lofty lives of opulence and egomania is the same as anything in our own. Their luxuries (indefinite trips around the world) are not our luxuries. Their worries our not our worries. Their rules are not our rules — even, it turns out, the golden one. Within Mike Flanagan’s interpretation of the Usher family, at least, the well-known advice of “do unto others” is little more than a punch line. Roderick (Bruce Greenwood), the patriarch of the pharmaceutical scions, explains how a joke he once told his children morphed into an accidental family motto. “It was in a comic book,” he says during an early episode of “The Fall of the House of Usher.” “‘The Wizard of Id’ — No. 4, I think, late ’60s — and the cover had a stout little king standing in a green tower.” The king bellows out to his pupils,...

House Of Usher's Arthur Gordon Pym & Transglobe Expedition Explained

Arthur Gordon Pym is the Usher family's attorney and is skilled at handling legal charges against them, ensuring they avoid any legal troubles. Pym's involvement in the Transglobe Expedition sheds light on his personality and motives, hinting at a brush with doom at the North Pole. The character of Pym in the show has parallels with Edgar Allan Poe's novel, facing trials and encountering supernatural figures, but the show delves deeper into his story after the adventure.

The Fall Of The House Of Usher Review: A Macabre, Darkly Humorous Tale Of Death
Image
"The Fall of the House of Usher" is Mike Flanagan's best Netflix show yet, a darkly humorous and contemplative tragedy that weaves the works of Edgar Allen Poe into a riveting tale of horror and hubris. The series features a talented cast, including Flanagan regulars, who relish their roles as deliciously evil characters within the Usher family. While the show includes jump scares and unsettling demonic entities, the true horror lies in the deteriorating relationships and the excessive violence, which the series never takes too seriously, resulting in a macabre and laugh-out-loud funny experience.

Mike Flanagan has long served as Netflix's horror maestro and, now that he has bid farewell to the streaming service, the writer-director gets one hell of a goodbye. Upcoming Mike Flanagan Horror Shows and Movies We Can’t Wait to Binge
Image
Mike Flanagan worked for quite a while before gaining worldwide recognition and acclaim for the first TV series he'd created, Netflix's The Haunting of Hill House (2018). Prior to Netflix, there were multiple masterful films from Flanagan throughout the 2010s, with not a single dud in the bunch, but with Hill House, Flanagan has seemed to fall in love with the TV format and hasn't released a film since.

The filmmaker now has a longtime deal with Netflix, which has proven to be pretty productive. Flanagan has already directed the Stephen King adaptation of Gerald's Game for Netflix and has continued their creative partnership with The Haunting of Bly Manor, the horror series masterpiece Midnight Mass, and the recently released The Midnight Club.

The Fall Of The House Of Usher – Release Date, First Look, Cast, Plot And More Info
Image
Mike Flanagan, the master of soulful horror whose previous Netflix series include "The Haunting of Hill House," "The Haunting of Bly Manor," "Midnight Mass," and "The Midnight Club," is returning this year with a mix of familiar cast members and fresh faces for "The Fall of the House of Usher." Though it takes its name from the short story by Edgar Allan Poe, the series is set in the modern era and incorporates a number of other Poe tales.

Netflix has built up a solid library of original horror series, from mega-hit "Stranger Things" to lesser-recognized gems like "Marianne." Following the success of "The Haunting Hill House," Netflix inked a multi-year overall television deal with Flanagan and his longtime producing partner, Trevor Macy. The pair were poached by Amazon in December 2022, so "The Fall of the House of Usher" will be the last "Flana-verse" show to arrive on Netflix for the foreseeable future.
