In the 80's, the teenage orphan and intern of an institution for protection of minors Vera Bauer (Ana Beatriz Nogueira) becomes the protégé of her teacher Paulo (Raul Cortez) that gets a job for her in a library. Bauer is a poetess and lives an inner conflict with her sexuality, feeling a man trapped in a female body. She falls in love with Clara (Aida Leiner), who works in the video department of the library and has a son, and they have a relationship. While she writes her biography, she recalls her life in the institution. However, she is not able to deal with her sexual crisis.
"Vera" is a sensitive film about lesbianism directed by Sergio Toledo and based on the true story of the transsexual Anderson Bigode Herzer a.k.a. Sandra Mara Herzer. This film has magnificent direction and performances, complemented by the soundtrack of Arrigo Barnabé, Roberto Ferraz and Tércio da Motta.
In 1987, "Vera" was awarded with the "Troféu Candango" in the Brasília Festival in the categories Best Actress (Ana Beatriz Nogueira); Best Soundtrack (Arrigo Barnabé, Roberto Ferraz and Tércio da Motta); and Best Sound (José Luiz Sasso) and the Silver Bear in the Berlin Festival in the category Best Actress (Ana Beatriz Nogueira), and the director Sergio Toledo was nominated for the Golden Bear. My vote is eight.

Title (Brazil): "Vera"
The Brazilian cinema has less ups and much more downs, this thematic movie about Lesb.ian didn't pleased the large majority of conservative Brazilian population, then it was restricted in few audience only, due my thoughts and background about this offering, it doesn't give me any interesting to go ahead, aside this issue really is utterly important for this group of human being that was born in wrong bodies, without any sidelining from myself, however in out of this movement, in fact it isn't my beach!!

Why this movie is named after his deadname i have no idea and some elements are also questionable, but for 1987, it is pretty progressive.
Ana Beatriz Nogueira is fantastic as Bauer and the film looks at sex as a trans person horrified by your own body in a way rarely seen on film but that is very relatable for a a lot of transgender people's lives.
It's not perfect in it's depiction of being transgender, it's from the 80s and directed by a cis man, so there are missteps, the title being the most glaring. But it's still a cornerstone of queer cinema, made with empathy, and well worth a look.
