Wielka majówka

I enjoyed watching "Wielka Majowka" (The Great May Holiday) as a picture that shows the atmosphere in Poland in 1981. The plot is about a crazy adventure of two young boys, Rysiek (Zbigniew Zamachowski) and Julek (Jan Piechocinski). Their pranks largely come down to playing rich people and enjoying luxury. When the heroes manage to get a bag of stolen money, they go on a big shopping spree and move into a high-class hotel. What they oppose is the poverty and hopelessness of the late Polish People's Republic. Their adventures are shown in the form of a kaleidoscope of mostly funny scenes, diversified by musical inserts in which the Maanam band appears. For me, this movie was interesting and had its funny but also sad side. The funny side is obvious, and there were many situations where you could laugh. The sadness is that neither in the image of Poland from 1981 nor in the characters in the film could any positive values be seen. It was clear that a lot of time had to pass before Poland could become a normal democratic country with a civil society.
